| RRP Brian Jacques' has a dedicated following of young readers across the globe who are totally enthralled by his Tales of Redwall books. Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that the atmosphere of the bestselling books is captured perfectly in this stunning full-length feature, which follows the story of a young Matthias, a heroic mouse in search of his destiny, and the beautiful and brave mousemaid Cornflour. Together, they begin their quest to find the lost sword of the legendary Martin the Warrior so they can save Redwall Abbey from the evil Cluny the Scourge--a wicked one-eyed rat intent on bringing Redwall to its knees. Adapting such a popular book for the screen could so easily have detracted from the essence of the original story, with its battle of good versus evil interspersed with warmth and humour, and its ability to truly capture a child's imagination. But this team have pulled it off with aplomb: the animation is spot on, the atmosphere is highly charged, the characters are true to Jacques' originals and, although those who know the book well will spot that some detail is missing, the important, magical, elements of the story are all there. This is exciting stuff, filled with heroism and humour, and packaged into 85 minutes of pure, unadulterated pleasure for lovers of fantasy and adventure. Age range: 7 and over. --Susan Harrison.

| RRP In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg's sequel to Jurassic Park is a poorly conceived, ill-organised film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn't seem to care that the pieces of this project don't add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in Jurassic Park) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). A complete bust.--Tom Keogh

Octopussy | Blu Ray | (04/02/2013)

| RRP Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made Octopussy, and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. There's an island populated only by women, as well as a fantastic sequence with a hand-to-hand fight on a plane--and on top of a plane. The film even has an extra emotional punch, since this time 007 is not only following the orders of Her Majesty's Secret Service, but he is also exacting a personal revenge: a fellow double-0 agent has been killed. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as Octopussy was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in Never Say Never Again. The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old licence to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so Octopussy was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com On the DVD: The high standard of these 007 discs is maintained here, with another extra-packed selection. The "Inside Octopussy" documentary details the making of the movie, which faced competition from Sean Connery's Never Say Never Again, as well as being handicapped by a potentially risible title. The initial story was developed by George Macdonald Fraser, author of the "Flashman" books, whose knowledge of Indian history and locales proved invaluable. Roger Moore prevaricated about signing on as Bond, so American James Brolin was screen-tested instead. The movie also produced the worst accident of the series while filming the train sequence and the stuntman involved was hospitalised for six months. Director John Glen provides a solo commentary that reveals a wealth of technical detail and also that this is one of his favourite Bond movies. Rita Coolidge performs "All Time High", and there are also some storyboard sequences and trailers. --Mark Walker
