| Saving you £-1.90 (N/A%)
| RRP This historic performance of the Dudley Moore Trio has never before been available to the general public. Thanks to the generosity of The Australian Broadcasting Corporation which has licensed it to Martine Avenue Productions this amazing performance can be seen for the first time since its 1971 television broadcast. 1971 marked the Dudley Moore Trio's first tour of Australia and it was a time of great excitement for the young trio members - Dudley Moore Pete Morgan and Chris Karan. Quite notable in this concert is the persona used by Dudley for many of his introductions - the very familiar Dud from his legendary 'Pete and Dud' sketches with Peter Cook along with several musical parodies that date from the days of Beyond the Fringe.

Comic Book Heroes | DVD | (03/02/2003)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Yes, they were originally Comic Book Heroes, although The Lone Ranger and Zorro's Black Whip are probably best remembered as the 1949 TV series and the 1944 Republic cinema serial respectively. This excellent three-disc set gives us the first three episodes of the former and the entire 12 episodes of the latter. The origin of the Lone Ranger is quite an extraordinary tale by any standards, let alone those of the fizzy blandness of 1940s American TV: originally one of the Texas Rangers, recruited to act as a mobile police force during the lawless days of the West, his entire patrol is massacred and he himself is left for dead, prompting him to become the masked vigilante of the title. The stark brutality of this event is depicted in chilling, slow-paced detail in the first episode, the distinctive voice-over narrative adding a dream-like detachment to the proceedings. Zorro's Black Whip, though slicker, is also innovative in that the main protagonist is female. The sister of a crusading newspaper editor who moonlights as the Black Whip, another masked righter of wrongs, she takes over both his day job and his crime-fighting role when he is murdered. Conveniently, she's a descendant of the legendary Zorro himself, with whip-wielding skills seemingly in her genes. But does this stuff stand up after all these years? In short, absolutely; this is first-rate period entertainment and as such is self-recommending. On the DVD: Comic Book Heroes has been transferred in its original 1.33:1 ratio and has been lovingly remastered--never has old monochrome footage glowed so richly. There are no subtitles or other extra features, though. --Roger Thomas

Custer Of The West | DVD | (01/08/2002)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP General George Armstrong Custer has been portrayed as everything from a vain but ultimately honourable hero (Errol Flynn in They Died with Their Boots On) to an insane, pompous incompetent (Richard Mulligan in the biting Little Big Man), but few have attempted an ambitious look at the man in all his contradictions. Robert Siodmak's Custer of the West, his final American production, attempts the task with fine results, portraying the career soldier as a pragmatist, a disciplinarian with a bullying streak, a loner and ultimately an Old World romantic in the modern age. Robert Shaw gives the role a regal bearing (though his continental accent keeps drifting in) and a sense of dignity, depicting a man who ironically identifies more with the Indians than with the US Army. Jeffrey Hunter and Ty Hardin co-star as his battling junior officers and Robert Ryan is memorable in a brief appearance as a gold-mining deserter. Shooting in handsome widescreen and vivid Technicolor, Siodmak makes his outdoor settings come alive and nimbly handles the many action scenes, most notably a chase that sends an escaping soldier whooshing down a log water chute like a Disney ride. Siodmak's sweeping visuals deliver both grand images and ironic counterpoint, but ultimately Custer of the West eschews the heroism of Hollywood adventures for a portrait of the corrupt state of the American military and one man's hopeless fight against it. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
