Harry (Robert Morley), their irascible Director, is highly critical of the play, which has been foisted on him by the owners of the Company and is unenthusiastic about its prospects. The cast, a mixture of wanabee-film stars and has-beens, are equally unenthusiastic and little progress is made. Just as matters seemingly cannot get worse, the authoress of the play, Catherine Beckwith (Rutherford), appears and insists on 'sitting at the feet' of the Director. Chaos ensues...

  The Lady and the Highwayman, produced by Lew Grade as part of a series of Barbara Cartland dramatisations in 1987, contains all the ingredients that made Cartland's unique style of romantic fiction so successful. The highwayman in question, known as Silver Blade, is actually an aristocratic outlaw played by a youthful Hugh Grant in a bouffant mullet wig. The lady is Panthea (Lysette Anthony), delicate but firm of purpose, who knows her man when she sees him. It's Restoration England, so the frocks are fabulous. But Cartland's pretensions to historical accuracy evaporate when she makes Charles II's mistress, Barbara Castlemaine (Dynasty's Emma Samms), the villainess of the piece. From there, it's a freewheeling ride of Robin Hood-inspired philanthropy, duplicitous cousins and some uncomfortably fetishistic shots of the rituals and instruments of execution, although everybody is rescued in time for the romantic soft-focus finale. Full of splendidly self-indulgent performances from the likes of Claire Bloom, John Mills and Michael York, The Lady and the Highwayman is a feast of thespian ham. Somehow, the cast triumph over the banality of the basic material. On the DVD: The Lady and the Highwayman is presented in 4:3 aspect ratio with a standard Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack. With an eye on the international market, it looks and feels like any lush mini-series of the 1980s. There are no extras. --Piers Ford

  There is nothing more entertaining than a grown man putting his arm up something furry and talking to it on daytime television, but nothing comes close to the entertainment factor of Puppetry of the Penis, the two-member show that wowed the Edinburgh festival and probably the strangest 50 minutes of entertainment you will ever experience. The creators of this strange puppetry are two lads hailing from Melbourne--David Friend and Simon Morley--who use an altogether different kind of marionette: their penises. This small-screen version of the Puppetry of the Penis (subtitled "The Ancient Art of Genital Origami") is filmed live at Melbourne's Forum theatre. Basically the guys do exactly what it says on the box, strip down to their socks and shoes and then manipulate their members into all manner of objects. Highlights include the Lock Ness monster (obviously added for the festival), the hamburger and their "penis de resistance", the windsurfer, which with the aid of a skateboard and fan signals their final exit. Funny and original as the concept is, this is the kind of show that definitely loses something on screen. Although it tries to capture some of the hilarity ensuing from the predominantly female hen-night audience by panning over the crowd, you can't help feeling that you are missing part of the joke. But some of the "dick tricks" are eye-wateringly funny, and if nothing else it's not every show where you get a quick tutorial into how to make your penis look like Ronald MacDonald's fave food. On the DVD: Although the show itself is only 50-min long, you also get a brilliant "Cockstars", a 45-min "Fly on the Wall" mockumentary, which details the twosome's rise to fame. And what about the disc itself? Well, you can cop a load of the boys in dramatic full-frame transfer and titter along with the Dolby Surround soundtrack; there is even a "Dick Trick" book, so that you can really can try these at home. --Kristen Bowditch

Many quarrels later the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter Black Heart which chronicled screenwriter Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture. The 39 Steps (1978) - It is 1914. Europe is on the brink of war. London seems peaceful enough but a dangerous conspiracy is underway...
