Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, Tangled is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The film focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a frying pan multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. Tangled is a masterful blend of humour, adventure, passion and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating. • Night Passage [1957]Night Passage | DVD | (23/08/2004) from £7.44   |  Saving you £-2.45 (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

Thanks to ultracrisp Technirama photography of great mountainside and river gorge locations in Colorado, Night Passage is often terrific to look at; you can almost feel the autumn sun and brisk air. This should have been another classic Western pairing James Stewart with director Anthony Mann. But after choosing the locations, cast, and crew, and directing the precredit sequence, Mann abruptly resigned. He found Borden Chase's screenplay an "incoherent" rehash of relationships and setups from their previous films, nor was he encouraged by Stewart's determination to play the accordion and sing. Stewart's an ex-railroad cop who became a pariah by letting a prisoner--Audie Murphy's "The Utica Kid"--escape. The two cross paths again in a ghost town where Dan Duryea, doing a zany version of his loony outlaw from Winchester '73, has holed up with his gang. Replacement director James Neilson, a newcomer destined for bland Disney servitude, fosters a lot of flatfooted standing-around.

  • George And Mildred - Series 1George And Mildred - Series 1 | DVD | (04/06/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

George and Mildred was a spin-off from Johnny Mortimer and Brian Cookes successful 1970s sitcom Man About the House, and ran from 1976 to 1980. This release features the first six episodes. Starring the late, great Yootha Joyce as Mildred Roper, a sex-starved cockney housewife with pretensions to the middle classes, and Brian Murphy as George, her hopeless and incorrigible husband, this series sees them make the upward move to posh Middlesex suburbia, despite George being on supplementary benefit--mortgage conditions were evidently easier in 70s sitcomland. Their neighbours are snooty estate agent Jeffrey Fourmile, his wife Ann and son Tristram. Jeffrey is perturbed that the Ropers arrival will lower the tone of the neighbourhood ("Tristram will get nits!") as they stink up the street with their three-wheel car and cheap wartime furniture. Much mildly amusing comedy at the expense of the working/middle class divide ensues, with no double-entendre left unturned and some period gags to match the Ropers interior decor. Situations involving a local MP, Mildreds even snobbier sister and an unsightly caravan brought out the best in Joyce and Murphys excellent characters, while Nicholas Owen as Tristram was among the least annoying of child sitcom stars. --David Stubbs
