In the 1960s, director Robert Hartford-Davis (The Black Torment, The Fiend) teamed up with producer/cameraman Peter Newbrook (The Asphyx) to make a series of low-budget films capitalising on the cinematic crazes of the day. In 1968, the duo stridently ventured into the surgical horror subgenre with Corruption, a grim update of Eyes Without a Face, transposed into the scenic south-coast seaside town of Seaford, via Swinging Sixties London. In a surprising performance, Peter Cushing (Captain Clegg, The Revenge of Frankenstein) stars as a high-class plastic surgeon who is driven to murder as part of a demented quest to rebuild the decaying visage of his fashion model wife (Sue Lloyd, The Ipcress File), who has been severely scarred at a party. A film that pushed the envelope of gore and sleaze in its era, Corruption is presented on home video for the first time in the UK. • Groundhog Day [1993]Groundhog Day | DVD | (20/03/2000) from £6.04   |  Saving you £6.95 (115.07%)   |  RRP £12.99

Decent, lighthearted and fully amusing slapstick is hard to come by these days, and 1993's Groundhog Day manages to also be genuinely wise about the human condition. All this and belly laughs too! Bill Murray stars as Phil, a bored, petulant news reporter, who is ordered to give his annual live report from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2. Though desperate to get out of the one-horse town and the appallingly sentimental assignment, Phil finds himself reliving the same day over and over again until he finally mends his ways. The film takes an absurd situation and explores its every imaginable comic possibility. Because none of the other characters are aware that Groundhog Day is continually repeating itself, Phil goes through a repertoire of responses, from conniving lust for Rita (Andie MacDowell) to gleeful nihilism to a Zen resignation worthy of Buster Keaton. Murray is reliably good, and this flick gives him a chance to be warm (though never fuzzy).

Designed as an offshoot from the legendary Armchair Theatre Out of this World was devised by television colossus Sydney Newman (Doctor Who The Avengers) and Irene Shubik (The Wednesday Play Rumpole of the Bailey) in 1962 to present the science fiction genre at its intelligent best to an adult audience. An anthology series produced by Leonard White dramatising the cream of literary science fiction from such writers as Isaac Asimov Clifford Simak and Philip K. Dick and using the considerable scriptwriting talents of Clive Exton Leon Griffiths and Terry Nation the show was a tremendous success paving the way for Irene Shubik’s later classic series Out of the Unknown. Hosted by veteran actor Boris Karloff each episode explored every aspect of the genre – from satire to suspense from tense drama to sparkling comedy with the greatest flair and invention that Sixties television could provide. This long awaited release presents the only surviving episode an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Little Lost Robot with Maxine Audley as the formidable ‘robopsychologist’ Susan Calvin. Also included are two audio recordings of otherwise lost episodes – Impostor By Philip K Dick dramatised by Terry Nation who devised the Daleks for Doctor Who the following year and Cold Equations Tom Godwin’s suspenseful tale featuring a very young Jane Asher the impeccable Peter Wyngarde and a screenplay by Clive Exton. Exton’s script for John Wyndhams’ The Dumb Martian which heralded the series is also included to download.

  • A Taste Of Honey [1961]A Taste Of Honey | DVD | (21/10/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Shelagh Delaney's play 'A Taste of Honey' had already played in the West End and on Broadway when Tony Richardson made his film adaptation shot on location in Salford and Blackpool. Rita Tushingham made her indelible screen debut as Jo a young girl who falls pregnant after leaving home and her floozie of a mother - a revelatory performance by Dora Bryan. Jo befriends Geoff (Murray Melvin) a gentle kind-hearted gay man and they move in together like two children playing house for a while finding an innocent but fragile happiness. Richardson always skilled with actors draws fine performances from his entire cast and 'A Taste of Honey' remains an outstanding example of the British New Wave shot by its star cinematographer Walter Lassally.

  • The Boston Strangler [DVD] [1968]The Boston Strangler | DVD | (12/03/2012) from £8.08   |  Saving you £1.91 (23.64%)   |  RRP £9.99

The unexpected casting of Tony Curtis as the presumed Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo, is only the first of the attractions of this hard-nosed suspense picture. Although the style of The Boston Strangler looks dated today, with its split-screen experiments and post-Bonnie and Clyde permissiveness, the film still has the clean, strong lines of a methodical policier. For the first hour, we don't focus on the Strangler, instead following the Beantown cops (led by Henry Fonda) as they track down leads; the best sequence is the near-accidental connection made between burglary suspect DeSalvo and the killings. Director Richard Fleischer had a forceful hand with true-crime material (Compulsion, 10 Rillington Place) and he takes an unblinking look into the then-taboo subject of sexual pathology. Curtis's physical transformation into a dumpy, dull-eyed brute is the best aspect of his performance; it's a role he lobbied hard for, but it did not lead to more challenging work. --Robert Horton
