An inevitable idea: a working man (Michael Keaton) who can't meet all his professional and family responsibilities has himself cloned. It works so well having one copy of himself to take charge of matters at the office that he makes another copy who takes care of the home front. Pretty soon, different aspects of Keaton's personality are emphasised in the different clones: the labourer becomes a macho creep and the domestic god becomes rather feminine. A third clone, struck from the duplicates instead of the original, becomes like a photocopy of a photocopy: inferior. Multiplicity is a timely comedy should be better than it is, but special-effects requirements are so labour-intensive that most scenes feel stiff and leaden. Keaton is good in all four parts, and in certain gee-whiz effects scenes, where he even high-fives himself, he pulls off a minor miracle or two. (Of course, a kid did the same thing in Disney's 1998 remake of The Parent Trap.) --Tom Keogh

  • Amityville Dollhouse [1996]Amityville Dollhouse | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Too good for cinema, Amityville Dollhouse went direct to video just like the previous three in this series of eight. But unlike any of the other sequels to the classic 1979 Amityville Horror, this one at least has an original idea. It's a little surreal, but resurrecting the house as a pint-sized plaything has the spark of ingenuity about it. If only something else in the movie did. The Martin family move into a newly built house (nowhere near the original incidentally). Father Bill (Robin Thomas) has warning dreams and nosebleeds, but still happily gives his daughter the dollhouse he finds in their shed of evil. Naturally, spooky things start happening. We guess the toy must be dangerous (without ever learning why) because: it smokes, plays with the lights, alters photographs, blows leaves about, and oozes mustard. All the family get a taste of its badness: little Jimmy finds a tarantula in the piñata, wife Claire gets the hots for son-in-law Todd, whose own girlfriend manages to set her head on fire in the hearth. And so on. At the end of the day, these incredulity-stretching franchise instalments at least have the fun factor of working out who will survive. If not that, then you can root for who you want to see splatted and how. On the DVD: Amityville Dollhouse comes to DVD with … a trailer, stereo sound, 4:3 picture. Come on, what else did you expect?--Paul Tonks

  • The Boston Strangler [1968]The Boston Strangler | DVD | (18/10/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

The unexpected casting of Tony Curtis as the presumed Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo, is only the first of the attractions of this hard-nosed suspense picture. Although the style of The Boston Strangler looks dated today, with its split-screen experiments and post-Bonnie and Clyde permissiveness, the film still has the clean, strong lines of a methodical policier. For the first hour, we don't focus on the Strangler, instead following the Beantown cops (led by Henry Fonda) as they track down leads; the best sequence is the near-accidental connection made between burglary suspect DeSalvo and the killings. Director Richard Fleischer had a forceful hand with true-crime material (Compulsion, 10 Rillington Place) and he takes an unblinking look into the then-taboo subject of sexual pathology. Curtis's physical transformation into a dumpy, dull-eyed brute is the best aspect of his performance; it's a role he lobbied hard for, but it did not lead to more challenging work. --Robert Horton

  • The Black Sabbath Story - Vol. 2 - 1978-1992The Black Sabbath Story - Vol. 2 - 1978-1992 | DVD | (26/08/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

This second instalment in The Black Sabbath Story covers the period between 1978 and 1992. These were the wilderness years after founding vocalist Ozzy Osbourne left the group and it often seemed as though Sabbath had fitted their tour bus with a revolving door--by 1986, guitarist Tony Iommi was the only founder member left in the group. Five different vocalists are featured in this programme: Ronnie James Dio (ex-Rainbow), Ian Gillan (ex-Deep Purple), Glenn Hughes, Geoff Nicholls and Tony Martin. The nine promo videos collected here are representatives of an era that all but the most die-hard of Sabbath fans have tried to forget. It is an ignominy that is richly merited. The kindest thing that can be said of this collection of awful 80s hair-metal soundtracking dreadful black-and-white videos of men with haircuts that not even German football players would be caught dead with is that it's an interesting period piece. On the DVD: The Black Sabbath Story is presented in widescreen. Sound is available in Dolby 5.1 Surround or Dolby Digital. The menu of extras is badly laid out, but includes a gallery of Sabbath albums and further interviews with band members--including an extraordinary and hilarious reminiscence from Ian Gillan, which confirms that that Black Sabbath's reality was far more preposterous than any of the satirical conceits offered by This Is Spinal Tap.--Andrew Mueller
