Reigning supreme for almost a decade as ITV's biggest comedian, Arthur Haynes was one of the most influential and popular comics that television has ever seen. His shows remained firmly in the top ten until his untimely death in 1966 robbed the world of a comedy genius. Lack of repeats ensured that subsequent generations were denied Haynes' comedic brilliance until the release of his surviving ATV shows on DVD. Featuring wickedly funny scripts from Alf Garnett creator Johnny Speight, this set contains all existing episodes of The Arthur Haynes Show. A lively mix of sketches and musical entertainment, Speight's scripts invariably drew on the familiar class antagonism which he would hone to perfection on Till Death Us Do Part. Haynes' robust working-class delivery was inspired never more so than in the character of Hobo Haynes, a belligerent, heavily decorated tramp fond of recounting tales of patriotic bravery whilst being 'up to me neck in muck and bullets'. This collection brings together all seven individual DVD volumes of The Arthur Haynes Show in a single set, returning him to his rightful place among the comedy greats. • The Dead Zone [1983]The Dead Zone | DVD | (04/03/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

One of the very best Stephen King film adaptations, The Dead Zone is imbued with an ever-present atmosphere of dread. Shot in a permanently wintry Canada (standing in for New England), the icy backdrops are subtly employed by director David Cronenberg to accentuate the story’s fatalistic tone. Cronenberg’s welcome emphasis for the most part on psychological terror over physical shocks (something of a change of direction for him after The Brood and Scanners) is further enhanced by composer Michael Kamen’s marvellously chilly music score and Christopher Walken’s understated yet dominating central performance as high school teacher Johnny Smith, who wakes from a coma following a car crash to learn that he has been cursed with the gift of second sight. That his uncanny ability is indeed a curse and definitely not a blessing is made abundantly clear: even when Johnny is able to save people’s lives, there is always a price to pay. The cosmic law of Karma is grimly unforgiving. Herbert Lom, as Johnny’s sympathetic doctor, sums up the character’s plight, "Some things just weren’t meant to be." And even when Johnny learns the terrible secret of future Presidential candidate Greg Stillson (a villainous Martin Sheen), he knows he cannot act without accepting the fatal consequences. Brooke Adams, as the love of Johnny’s life, and Tom Skerrit, as the quietly desperate sheriff on the trail of a serial killer, are excellent in support. On the DVD: this disc comes with a chunky accompanying booklet with background notes on the film, cast and director, as well as a script excerpt for the originally planned pre-credits sequence (in the finished film we assume Johnny’s second sight is a result of the car accident--this earlier screenplay follows the book more closely). The movie itself--which features the "scissor-suicide" scene uncut--is accompanied by a chatty and informative commentary from film critics Stephen Jones and Kim Newman (a regular Amazon.co.uk contributor). Both the 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen picture and the Dolby 5.1 sound are adequate if unexceptional. --Mark Walker

Having visited the woods several times in his life, an overconfident Alex shuns bringing a map or mobile phone and is determined to veer away from the hiking trails into the true wilderness along the secluded Blackfoot Trail. His blind ambition grows stronger when a cocky intruder (Eric Balfour) insinuates Alex is just another soft yuppie pretending to know the area. Before they know it, Alex and Jeff find themselves lost and even worse, they end up stumbling into the hunting grounds of a black bear with a voracious appetite.

  • Croupier [1999]Croupier | DVD | (14/04/2003) from £5.41   |  Saving you £4.58 (84.66%)   |  RRP £9.99

The Croupier sees Clive Owen suffering from a bad case of writer's block as author Jack Manfred. Sitting in his London flat staring at an empty computer screen, trying to find the words to narrate his meandering life, he reluctantly accepts a job from his absentee father (Nicholas Ball) in a second rate casino as a dealer, or croupier, a job he once held in South Africa. His immersion back into this world is intoxicating, thanks primarily to the power he holds over his nightly clientele. Jack is a straight arrow on the floor (unlike his co-workers) but the whisper of an inside-job robbery makes his life suddenly more intriguing, as do the women who begin to drift into his life: a fellow croupier (Kate Hardie) and an alluring gambler (Alex Kingston). Suddenly, Jack finds his own life is his best book material. There's something visceral about watching the world of gambling, and director Mike Hodges (the original Get Carter) taps into this allure; Jack's simple croupier tryout--handling cards and chips with skill and grace--is as captivating as most action scenes in big popcorn films. In the end, this little film, which went on to become an art-house hit, is as unpredictable as a roll of the dice. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  • Murder At 1600 [1997]Murder At 1600 | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

The discovery of a dead female staffer in a White House restroom galvanizes a D.C. homicide cop (Wesley Snipes), but the results aren't hard to predict: the crime implicates the Oval Office, the presidential bureaucracy impedes the investigation, and so on. What isn't so predictable is that the whole thing leads to an improbable climax involving secret tunnels created by Abraham Lincoln. (Snipes's character, by the way, is a Civil War buff.) The creaky mystery feels a little anachronistic from the get-go, with some particularly corny and laughable dialogue. --Tom Keogh

  • Turn Of The Screw - BrittenTurn Of The Screw - Britten | DVD | (21/01/2005) from £21.19   |  Saving you £3.80 (17.93%)   |  RRP £24.99

Benjamin Britten's haunting and sinister opera composed in 1954 is based on the famous novella written by Henry James in 1898. Katie Mitchell's atmospheric and innovative film of the opera returns to the late 19th century setting of the original tale to a world where it is hard to tell ghosts from mere reflections in the glass. There have been many discussions about what happened to the children in both the novella and Britten's opera. This production with an inspired cast led by excellent performances from Lisa Milne and Mark Padmore remains true to both sources. The rich dark imagery entices the viewer exposing the deepest layers of the tantalising unnamed and hidden past relationships between the two servants and the children in one of the greatest operas of the 20th century.
