In its fourth series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to change its formula radically. Two major characters--the vampire-with-a-soul Angel and Cordelia, the queen bitch of Sunnydale High--had gone off to be in their own show, Angel, and soon after the start of the year Willow's werewolf boyfriend Oz left when Seth Green needed to concentrate on his film career. Buffy and Willow started college, where they met new characters such as Riley, the All-American Boy with a double life, and Tara, the sweet stuttering witch; but Xander and Giles found themselves at something of a loose end. Several characters were subjected to the radical re-envisioning possible in a show that deals with the supernatural: the blond vampire Spike came back and soon found himself with an inhibitor chip in his head, forced into reluctant alliance with Buffy; the former vengeance demon Anya became passionately smitten with Xander. Not all fans were happy with the central story arc about the sinister Dr Walsh (Lindsay Crouse) and her Frankensteinian creation Adam, though Crouse's performance was memorable. The strength of Series 4 was perhaps most in impressive stand-alone episodes such as the silent "Hush", the multiple dream sequence "Restless" and the passionate, moving "New Moon Rising", in which Oz returns, apparently cured, only to find that Willow is no longer waiting for him. This was one of the high points of the show as a vehicle for intense acting, perhaps only equalled by "Who Are You?", in which the evil slayer Faith takes over Buffy's body and Sarah Michelle Gellar gets to play the bad girl for once. --Roz Kaveney

Queen Elizabeth II - The Diamond Celebration tells the fascinating story of the Queen who has served her nation throughout good and bad: from the Second World War; her marriage to Prince Philip; the death of her father King George VI; her Coronation and sixty year reign, Queen Elizabeth II - The Diamond Celebration is the definitive story of how the young Princess became a regal Queen. The Tomorrow People was a children's science fiction adventure series launched in 1973 as ITV's answer to Doctor Who. In the opening five-part adventure "Slaves of Jedikiah" we meet Stephen (Peter Vaughan-Clarke) who is about to "break-out" to the next level of human evolution, becoming a Homo Superior, or "Tomorrow Person". Developing telepathic and telekenetic powers, as well as the ability to teleport, he becomes the target for mysterious American cult leader, Jedikiah (Francis de Wolff). Already secretly established with biological supercomputer TIM in an abandoned underground tunnel are three Tomorrow People--John (Nicholas Young), Carol (Sammie Winmill) and Kenny (Stephen Salmon)--who rescue Stephen and then find themselves on a damaged starship in a race against time to save its alien captain. Although the budget was low--the tin robot with his head on fire is particularly laughable--the story is ambitious and the utilitarian special effects are in plentiful supply. There's a trippy, post-2001: A Space Odyssey quality to some of the visuals, a great theme tune and acting of decidedly pantomime calibre. The Tomorrow People themselves come from a past in which teenagers still say "smashing!", but the fantasy of advanced, pacifist children saving the world had a lasting appeal, enough that the show ran eight seasons, then was revived for three more in the 1990s. --Gary S Dalkin

An example of Hong Kong action cinema at its most mainstream, A Man Called Hero owes perhaps more to the films of Steven Segal than it does those of John Woo. The tale of a mythical hero who borders on the status of superhero, the film is stripped of any potential credibility by some of the most appalling dubbing ever seen at the cinema. While the original Chinese cast may inject the movie with passion, their American voice-over replacements obviously never made it past the sincere section of acting class. Each line is delivered with such false earnestness that the film sounds like a cross between Days of Our Lives and an episode of Pokémon. No cinematic cliché is left untouched, suggesting that this is not just a case of something lost in the translation but just a bad film... in anybody's language. The world-wide success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has proved that there is a huge market for original Eastern cinema, even more reason to avoid the pointless rehashing of the worst of Hollywood that A Man Called Hero undoubtedly is. --Phil Udell

Based freely on the classic novels by C. Forester, Hornblower is a series of TV films following the progress of a young officer through the ranks of the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The series greatest asset is the handsome and charismatic Ioan Gruffudd in the lead role, surely a major star in the making. For television films the production values are very good, though as Titanic, Waterworld and The Perfect Storm demonstrated, filming an aquatic adventure is a very expensive business, and it is clear that the Hornblower dramas simply make the best of comparatively small budgets. No more faithful to Forester's books than the 1951 Gregory Peck classic Captain Horatio Hornblower, the real inspiration seems to have come from the success of Sharpe, starring Sean Bean, which likewise featured a British hero in the Napoleonic Wars. Nevertheless, while rather more easy going than the real British navy of the time, the Hornblower saga delivers an entertaining adventure, greatly enhanced by the presence of such guest stars as Denis Lawson, Cheri Lunghi, Ronald Pickup and Anthony Sher.--Gary S Dalkin
