| RRP A triple bill of Doris Day movies including Lover Come Back Send Me No Flowers and Pillow Talk. Lover Come Back: Jerry Webster (Hudson) and Carol Templeton (Day) are rival Madison Avenue advertising executives who each dislike each other's methods. After he steals a client out from under her cute little nose revenge prompts her to infiltrate his secret VIP campaign in order to persuade the mystery product's scientist to switch to her firm. Trouble is the product is phony and the scientist is Jerry who uses all his intelligence and charm to steal her heart! Send Me No Flowers: When he overhears a doctor discussing the imminent death of a patient hypochondriac George (Hudson) believes the doc is referring to him. Convinced he's living on borrowed time George enlists the aid of his best friend Arnold (Randall) to find a new husband for his soon-to-be-widowed wife Judy (Day). Already alarmed by her husband's increasingly strange behavior Judy is even more bewildered when an old flame shows up George bends over backwards to encourage his advances! Pillow Talk: Day is an uptight interior decorator forced to share a party line with an amorous playboy who ties up the line with his exploits while she is trying to conduct business. When the two accidentally meet he's taken with her beauty and pretending to be a wealthy Texan begins to court her mercilessly. Though flattered by this stranger's attention it's not long before she discovers his true identity. Now it's her turn to have a little fun...at his expense!
Space: 1999 - Series 2 Complete | DVD | (12/11/2001)

| RRP Many fans don't rate the second series of Space: 1999 as highly as the first. Responding to audience feedback, as well as the separation of producers Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the programme makers drafted in new producer Fred Freiberger, the man responsible for the third and weakest season of the original Star Trek. Under his guidance the storylines drifted away from the hard sci-fi of the first season in favour of more action and a faster pace. The theme music, sets and costumes all changed, as did some key personnel. Out went professorial (and very dull) Barry Morse, in came dashing Tony Anholt as security officer Tony Verdeschi, while the glamour quotient was upped considerably by Catherine Schell as the shape-shifting Maya (a much-needed change, since the frosty Barbara Bain had reduced the show's sex appeal to nil in Series 1). Series 2 also introduced lots and lots more aliens kitted out in badly fitting costumes and dodgy glam-rock era makeup. Responding to yet more feedback from American TV executives the protagonists now had to encounter more highly unconvincing monsters than even Dr Who ever dared imagine: "The Beta Cloud", for example, is a classic rampaging-bloke-in-a-suit scenario. That said, this second season has more emphasis on characters other than the headline stars, as various stranded Alphans are allowed to come to the fore instead of just blankly following Commander Koenig's orders. It's all good fun in a silly, nostalgic sort of way, and fans of the more vintage Season 1 will find it hard to resist this second season as well.On the DVD: There aren't many extras here, although sundry interviews with principal cast and crew are scattered across the six discs in this complete box set. There's also a commentary on some episodes with special effects man Brian Johnson, a couple of deleted scenes, production stills and some text features. Each disc has a small booklet that gives some useful background information on the episodes. The remastered 4:3 ratio picture and mono sound are fine. --Mark Walker

| RRP In the 1950s, Britain had a massive railway network. A decade later it was barely recognisable. Country stations and branch lines were axed in the name of progress; steam locomotives were consigned to the scrapheap. Two forces were behind this transformation: the Modernisation Plan and Dr Richard Beeching. For better and for worse, this is the story of how and why our railways were changed forever. Composed entirely from unseen colour film, witness the lost age of British Railways.

| RRP Sin City (2005): Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything... Welcome to Sin City. This town beckons to the tough the corrupt the brokenhearted. Some call it dark. Hard-boiled. Then there are those who call it home. Crooked cops. Sexy dames. Desperate vigilantes. Some are seeking revenge. Others lust after redemption. And then there are those hoping for a little of both. A universe of unlikely and reluctant heroes still trying to do the right thing in a city that refuses to care. Three stories - shocking suspenseful and searing - come to the fore in a new motion picture from co-directors Frank Miller (comics idol and author of the Sin City comics) and Robert Rodriguez - with special guest director Quentin Tarantino! Sin City was one of several films around the world to be shot on a completely digital backlot; with all the acting shot in front of a green screen and the backgrounds added during post-production). While the other movies Immortel (ad vitam) (2004) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) and Casshern (2004) were shot first Rodriguez's use of High-Definition digital cameras (like 'Sky Captain') in addition to the 'backlot' method makes Sin City one of the world's first 'fully-digital' live action motion pictures. Desperate to create Sin Cityas a translation rather than a 'Hollywood' adaptation Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller actually used the panels from the original comic books as storyboards for the movie. The visual style strongly echoes the comics throughout with the black and white footage broken up momentarily by splashes of colour in certain scenes - a similar effect was used in Pleasantville. Needless to say this all contributes to make - possibly - the greatest most authentic comic book 'translation' yet... Kill Bill (2004): Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! In part 1 of Quentin Tarantino's delirious revenge movie Uma Thurman plays 'The Bride' a woman seeking vengeance on those who massacred her wedding party... Inspired by countless Japanese swordplay actionfests (the classic Lady Snowblood among them) yakuza gangster thrillers (offering a cameo opportunity to genre icon Sonny Chiba) and Chinese martial arts movies (hence the knowing appearance of Jackie Chan contemporary Gordon Liu) Quentin Tarantino borrows from the best in order to shape his deliciously over the top cinematographic style into a simple but effective plot. Look out too for Battle Royale alumni Chiaki Kuriyama as Lucy Lui's weapon-wielding schoolgirl bodyguard and the gravel-voiced Shun Sugata (he of Ichi The Killer fame who also appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai). Homage? Pastiche? Kill Bill is not just for movie anoraks complete with all the super-smooth tunes that you'd expect from a Tarantino soundtrack it's definitely the most outrageously entertaining film yet from cinema's king of cool! Kill Bill 2 (2004): The second part of Quentin Tarantino's deliriously stylish movie as The Bride (Thurman) continues her typically blood-soaked revenge quest... Having killed two of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad The Bride continues her mission to avenge the three remaining names on her death list that turned her El Paso wedding party into bloody carnage and left her for dead. Her attention turns to Budd (Michael Madson) Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) and finally the corpse littered path leads to Bill (David Carradine). However an unexpected survivor complicates matters...

Hot Fuzz - Universal 100th Anniversary Edition | Blu Ray | (25/02/2013)
from £N/A

| RRP A major British hit, a lorryload of laughs and some sparkling action? Well have some of that. Its fair to say that Hot Fuzz proves that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wrights brilliant Shaun Of The Dead was no one-off, serving up a superbly crafted British homage to the Hollywood action movie. Deliberately set in the midst of a sleepy, quaint English village of Sandford, Peggs Nicholas Angel is sent there because, bluntly, hes too good at his job, and hes making his city colleagues look bad. The proverbial fish out of water, Angel soon discovers that not everything in Sandford is quite as it seems, and joins forces with Nick Frosts lumbering Danny Butterman to find out whats what. Hot Fuzz then proceeds to have a rollicking good time in both tipping its hat to the genre films that are clearly its loving inspiration, and coming up with a few tricks of its own. It does comedy better than action, with plenty of genuine laugh-out-loud moments, but its no slouch either when the tempo needs raising. One of the many strong cards it plays is its terrific cast, which includes former 007 Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey, Paddy Considine, Edward Woodward and Jim Broadbent. Hot Fuzz, ultimately, just falls short of Shaun Of The Dead, but more than does enough to warrant many, many repeat viewings. Its terrific fun, and in the true hit action movie style, all-but-demands some form of sequel. That said, with Pegg and Wright now with two excellent, and suitably different, genres ticked off, itll be interesting to see what they do next. A period drama, perhaps ? --Simon Brew
