This adaptation of the bestselling novel by William Styron is faithful to the point of being reverential, which is not always the right way to make a film come to life. But director Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men) provides a steady, intelligent path into the harrowing story of Sophie, whose flashback memories of the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp form the backbone of the movie. Streep's exceptional performance--flawless Polish accent and all--won her an Oscar, and effectively raised the standard for American actresses of her generation. No less impressive is Kevin Kline, in his movie debut, capturing the mercurial moods of the dangerously attractive Nathan. The two worlds of Sophie's Choice, nostalgic Brooklyn and monstrous Europe, are beautifully captured by the gifted cinematographer Néstor Almendros, whose work was Oscar-nominated but didn't win.   In the 1970's 'Love Thy Neighbour' was one of the most highly rated programs on television it was always a top ten show and it reached an audience in excess of 16 million viewers. Many a British family laughed when they watched Bill (Black) and Eddie (white) trying to get on and live and work together with hilarious results as their backgrounds and way of lives clashed. 'Love Thy Neighbour' proved to be a very clever comedy every episode showed the wrongs of prejudice as Eddy was shown to be on the majority of occasions out of order and in the minority. The show probably went a long way towards getting the British public to accept and get on with their ethnic colleagues in all aspects of every day life as at the end of the day 'Love Thy Neighbour' was just a white guy and a black guy being damn stupid!

  Sometimes a show cancelled prematurely can still put its competitors to shame. Boomtown was a radical and inventive approach to the ensemble cop show that added up to so much more than just its central gimmick of telling different stories from different perspectives. In fact, after the first few episodes in which the breakneck jumps of viewpoint and the time-frame demanded real attention, it de-emphasised them, while still forcing us to pay attention, making the viewer guess which story we were being told. Devised by award-winning screenwriter Graham Yost and director Jon Avnet, the first series of Boomtown covered a wide variety of cases: everything from baby-stealing to run-ins with the Russian Mafia, from hostage situations in suburban sports stores to rich kids having justice bought for them whether they wanted it or not. It was also the story of its seven central characters: Deputy DA David (Neil McDonough), for example, failing to cope with his growing alcoholism and sense of disillusion, and detective Joel Stevens (Donnie Wahlberg) endlessly reliving the cot-death of his daughter and his wife's attempted suicide. If the show had flaws, they were the slight marginalisation of the central female characters--a crime reporter and a paramedic--and the presence of too many storylines that were as much about teaching the characters a Valuable Lesson as credible crime stories. Nonetheless, it was a stunning show, which deserved a longer life. This complete Series 1 box set at least offers a readily available record of it for those of us who liked it too late. On the DVD: Boomtown, Series 1 DVD box set presents all 18 episodes (a further six were made for Series 2 before the show's cancellation) presented in widescreen 16:9 with the choice of Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 Pro Logic. The only special features are a trailer and the original series pitch video. --Roz Kaveney

  Filmed in 1984 for the BBC, the feature-length documentary Leonard Bernstein conducts West Side Story follows the composer through one week as he records the first-ever complete album of his musical theatre masterpiece. (The previous Broadway cast and original soundtrack albums had both been cut down to single LP length.) Virtually the entire documentary takes place in a New York recording studio with a pick-up orchestra, session singers and headliners Kiri Te Kanawa (Maria), José Carreras (Tony), Tatiana Troyanos (Anita) and Kurt Ollmann (Riff). The 89-minute programme alternates rehearsal footage with complete final takes of the main numbers--including "Tonight", "America", and "Maria"--with a limited amount of comment from the principal players. Te Kanawa explains how much the music means to her, Troyanos notes how she grew-up in the very streets depicted on stage and Carreras provides a rare moment of tension when a session ends unsatisfactorily. Bernstein himself is by turns commanding, charming, enthusiastic or weary. For anyone wanting an extensive insight into what happens as a major album is recorded this is fascinating, though others who just want to enjoy the wonderful music will be better served by the resultant two-CD set. On the DVD: Though filmed for British television, Deutsche Grammophon have chosen to release a single region-free (Region 0) DVD for the entire world. Unfortunately this means the disc is in NTSC format rather than PAL, and requires an NTSC-compatible television for playback. It also means that while the sound has been effectively remastered for PCM stereo the picture shows all the signs of a bad NTSC copy--weak, washed-out colours and poor definition with a serious lack of detail. Most videos are far better. The DVD has subtitles in German, French, Spanish and Chinese. There are no extras, though the booklet adapts an interesting article by producer Humphrey Burton which originally appeared in Gramophone magazine in 1985.--Gary S Dalkin

  A smoulderingly laconic Rory Calhoun stars as Cully, charismatic leader of a gang of outlaws on the run after a bank robbery. Their dash for the border is brought to an abrupt halt by a chance meeting with an old compadre and his beautiful young daughter. Taking refuge from a storm in a barn, it's lust at first sight for Cully and the luscious Lolly Bhumer (Colleen Miller) but her trigger-happy father (Walter Brennan) soon puts a stop to that. Fate soon brings them back together when Cully and his men find the father and daughter being attacked by a band of renegade apaches.Heroically, Cully sacrifices his escape from the Sheriff's posse in order to rescue them. This is former actor Richard Carlson's second film and his first Western and perhaps that's why this adaptation of Louis L'Amour's novel is so exceptionally original for its genre. With a terrific supporting cast, including Walter Brennan, John McIntire and Charles Drake, this is a thoughtful and character-driven film. It's also sumptuously shot and thanks to the powerful sexual chemistry between Cully and Lolly, it exudes a steamy sensuality you wouldn't expect to find in a fifties Western!

It is based on fairy tales from the Urals collected by Pavel Bazhov and set in the middle of the 19th century.In Stone Flower you can feel Prokofiev's resignation after the hard struggle with the political situation but nevertheless he hasn't lost his brilliance and the music of his last ballet still is full of catchy tunes and joyousness.However with the completion of his composition it took four years before it received its premiere in Moscow and was not a great success at all. It was only three years later with the choreography of Yuri Grigorovich that Prokofiev's Stone Flower finally come to a glorious resurrection. The young choreographer simplified the story and focussed on nothing but the dance. The ballet became his first major success. The presented version shows a reproduction of this choreography from 1957 which has become immortal.
