  Remember Candyman, Bernard Rose's fine 1993 urban-legend horror movie based on Clive Barker's screenplay? How about Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, the inevitable but actually halfway decent second bite at the cherry? Well, in the time-honoured tradition of sequels having less to do with the original with every step down the filmic food chain, the third instalment in the saga of the hook-handed bogeyman had no input from Barker, contains no creepy Phillip Glass score and has no real connection to either of its predecessors in terms of plot. That is unless you count the goon of the title (Tony Todd), returning from whatever ethereal plane he usually resides in to put the wind up his--wait for it--great, great grandaughter, slack-jawed LA art gallery owner Caroline McKeever (Donna D'Errico, hitherto best known for her work on Baywatch). Desperate to claim her soul so he can have a spot of companionship throughout the long days of eternity, Todd promptly sets about slicing and dicing various unfortunate Angelenos, making sure his last living relative gets the blame each and every time. Headed straight for the chair, can D'Errico save LA, and herself, from her heinous ancestor? And, more to the point, can she do so while walking and chewing gum at the same time? Dependent on huge amounts of viscera and its female lead's willingness to shed her clothes, this cheap knock-off still conjures the up the odd moment of unsettling gloom, while Todd is as reliably hammy as ever. All the same, you can't help hoping this is definitely, positively the last time round the block for the franchise: whatever you do, don't stand in front of any mirrors chanting "Candyman 4, Candyman 4, Candyman 4".   In 1971 when Carry On at Your Convenience hit our screens, the series had long since become part of the fabric of British popular entertainment. Never mind the situation, the characters were essentially the same, film after film. The jokes were all as old as the hills, but nobody cared, they were still funny. But it's just too easy to treat them as a job lot of postcard humour and music hall innuendo. This tale of revolt at a sanitary ware factory--Boggs and Son, what else?--certainly chimed in with the state of the nation in the early 1970s when strikes were called at the drop of a hat. Here, tea urns, demarcation and the company's decision to branch out into bidets all wreak havoc. Kenneth Williams as the company's besieged managing director, Sidney James and Joan Sims give their all as usual, but it's the lesser roles that really add some lustre. Hattie Jacques as Sid's budgerigar-obsessed, sluggish put-upon wife and Renee Houston as a superbly domineering battleaxe with a penchant for strip poker remind us that in the hands of fine actors, even the laziest of caricatures become real human beings. --Piers Ford

  Manhattan, Woody Allen's follow-up to Oscar-winning Annie Hall, is a film of many distinctions: its glorious all-Gershwin score, its breathtakingly elegant black-and-white, widescreen cinematography by Gordon Willis (best-known for shooting the Godfather movies); its deeply shaded performances; its witty screenplay that marked a new level in Allen's artistic maturity; and its catalogue of Things that Make Life Worth Living. Allen's "Rhapsody in Gray" concerns, as his own character puts it, "people in Manhattan who are constantly creating these real, unnecessary, neurotic problems for themselves, because it keeps them from dealing with more insoluble, terrifying problems about the universe". It's a romantic comedy about infidelity and betrayal, the rules of love and friendship, young girls (a radiant and sweet Mariel Hemingway) and older men (Allen), innocence, and sophistication. (a favourite phrase is used to describe a piece of sculpture at the Guggenheim: "It has a marvellous kind of negative capability".) The film's themes can be summed up in two key lines: "I can't believe you met somebody you like better than me", and "It's very important to have some kind of personal integrity". OK, so they may not sound like such sparkling snatches of brilliant dialogue, but Manhattan puts those ideas across with such emotion that you feel an ache in your heart. --Jim Emerson
