SAS - Are You Tough Enough? - Uncut | DVD | (11/03/2002)
from £12.58
| Saving you £7.41 (58.90%)
| RRP Considerations of national security permitting, there is a fascinating series to be made about the selection procedures and training of the Special Air Service, but SAS: Are You Tough Enough is not it. This is basically Big Brother joins the army, in which 29 civilians are subjected to a dramatically reduced version of the SAS induction process (10 days instead of six months). Although it's essentially just an outdoor game show, the series is presented with an air of gravitas which suggests that someone, somewhere in the commissioning process seriously believes that this proves something. But the few contestants who end up passing the course are no more qualified to join the regiment than the owner of a Playstation flight simulator is to land a 747. SAS: Are You Tough Enough is trying to have its rations and eat them. To the extent that there is a point to reality television programmes, it's that all the mystique of television is stripped away. Here, though, we're expected to believe that the mock interrogations are desperate, dramatic contests of will--which is difficult when we know full well that there's a camera crew in the room. Mildly diverting it might be, but Are You Tough Enough is neither informative nor entertaining.--Andrew Mueller

Tales Out Of School - Four Plays by David Leland | Blu Ray | (04/07/2011)
from £27.09
| Saving you £2.90 (10.71%)
| RRP These four television films originally screened by Channel 4 in 1983 brought the emerging writing talent of former actor David Leland to national attention. He would subsequently win a BAFTA Award for his directorial debut Wish You Were Here and an Emmy Award for his contribution to Band of Brothers and work on screenplays for Mona Lisa and Personal Services. Featuring early roles for Tim Roth and Jim Broadbent the plays form a scathing portrait of British society in the early 1980s focusing in particular on the polarisation of attitudes towards the role and methods of education in an increasingly fragmented society. Without overtly offering solutions Leland s plays depict - often with unnerving acuity and foresight - the experience of individuals within systems that have become inadequate in dealing with the fallout of social breakdown. Of the four plays presented here Made in Britain directed by Alan Clarke (Scum) inevitably aroused the strongest controversy with Tim Roth s astonishing portrayal of a nihilistic racist teenage skinhead captured by Chris Menges innovative cinematography; the screenplay won Leland the Prix Italia in 1983. Birth Of A Nation: Featuring Jim Broadbent the play dramatises the conflict between old authoritarian teaching methods and the more relaxed approach of progressive educationalists. Flying Into The Wind: Graham Crowden stars in a play depicting the battle between parents who want to home-educate their children and the local education authority. R.H.I.N.O.: The harrowing story of Angela a disenfranchised young black girl living in 1980s London and her encounters with a well-meaning but often ineffectual social system. Made In Britain: Directed by Alan Clarke Tim Roth makes his TV debut as a hate-filled teenage skinhead on a self-destructive campaign destined to lead to permanent incarceration.

Carry On Loving | DVD | (07/07/2003)
from £9.06
| Saving you £3.93 (43.38%)
| RRP Setting a Carry On film in a marriage bureau has a certain self-serving obviousness, so it's hardly surprising that Carry On Loving milks the idea for all it's worth. The Wedded Bliss Agency is of course a pretty dubious outfit, being run by Sid (James) and Sophie Bliss (Hattie Jacques), who together are the worst possible example for both marriage and their own profession: they constantly snipe at each other, they aren't actually married and their sophisticated computer matching system is in fact a complete fake. The remainder of the team are mostly cast as hapless clients, with predictable but often very funny situations arising from the various mismatches engineered by the agency, such as the inevitable misunderstanding over one client's interest in modelling. Yes, the humour is about as subtle as a flatulent elephant, but you can't help entering into the spirit of the thing. If there's an outstanding performance it has to be that of Imogen Hassall, who handles her transformation from round-shouldered frump to well-bred love goddess with considerable expertise and a genuine sense of fun. --Roger Thomas

Watership Down | DVD | (25/06/2001)
from £8.96
| Saving you £7.03 (78.46%)
| RRP Much like Richard Adams' wonderful novel this animated tale of wandering rabbits is not meant for small children. It is, however, rich storytelling, populated with very real individuals inhabiting a very real world. The animation is problematic, sometimes appearing out of proportion or just below par; but it seems to stem from an attempt at realism, something distinguishing the film's characters from previous, cutesy, animated animals. A band of rabbits illegally leave their warren after a prophecy of doom from a runt named Fiver (voiced by Richard Briers). In search of a place safe from humans and predators, they face all kinds of dangers, including a warren that has made a sick bargain with humankind, and a warren that is basically a fascist state. Allegories aside, Down is engaging and satisfying, and pulls off the same amazing trick that the novel did--you'll forget that this is a story about rabbits. --Keith Simanton, Amazon.com
