Broadchurch (Special Edition) | Blu Ray | (04/11/2013)
from £5.35
| Saving you £19.64 (367.10%)
| RRP When ITV first started screening Broadchurch, ostenisbly a murder mystery from the mind of Chris Chibnall, it didn't really get an awful lot of attention. Sure, the strong cast, led by David Tennant and Olivia Colman, meant it got noticed. But detective whodunnits are hardly rare. However, as the weeks went by on original transmission, Broadchurch escalated, and by the end, large parts of the nation were gripped by one of the best mysteries to have screened in many, many years. No wonder a second series was swiftly announced. This first one introduces us to the apparently quiet town of Broadchurch in south England. There, an 11-year schoolboy has gone missing, as two detectives, who hardly get on, are forced to join together to get to the bottom of what's happened. But all is not what it seems in Broadchurch, and to say any more would spoil the undoubted fun in watching it all unfold. For this is premier quality drama. Tennant and Colman are excellent, but the ensemble cast bring a collection of excellent, believable performances too. It's the writing that lifts things, though, and you can't help but be gripped as the story unravels. As well as the excellent show itself, the disc release also features a look behind the scenes of Broadchurch, along with background material. But it's that main drama that's the undoubted attraction, and one that's aching to be rewatched once seen, if only to pick up all the clues you might just have missed... --Jon Foster

Hold Back The Dawn | Blu Ray | (15/07/2019)
from £16.39
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP From one of the most underrated directors of Hollywood s golden era, Mitchell Leisen (Remember the Night), comes the heart-rending romantic drama Hold Back the Dawn... Charles Boyer (Gaslight) gives an enthralling performance as Georges Iscovescu, a Romanian-born gigolo who arrives at a Mexican border town seeking entry to the US. Faced with a waiting period of eight years, George is encouraged by his former dancing partner Anita (Pauline Goddard, Modern Times) to marry an American girl and desert her once safely across the border. He successfully targets visiting school teacher Emmy Brown (Olivia de Havilland, Gone with the Wind), but his plan is compromised by a pursuing immigration officer, and blossoming feelings of genuine love for Emmy. A moving and thoughtful film with a wonderful script (co-written by Billy Wilder), Hold back the Dawn benefits from evocative performances by Boyer and de Havilland, and an over-arching sense of romantic melancholy. An enduring classic of its era, Leisen s film was nominated for no-less than six Academy Awards and is presented here in High Definition for the first time.

from £4.90
| Saving you £11.09 (226.33%)
| RRP As Tarzan and Jane's first anniversary of wedded jungle bliss approaches, Jane ponders what gift would be appropriate--necessitating three flashbacks from the Disney television series explaining why various celebrations are out of the question. First Jane remembers when her old British school chums came to rescue her from the bush and whisk her back to civilization. Then Terk and Tantor help her recall the time diamond miners hired Tarzan only to double-cross him. The final remembrance features Jane's old neighbour Robert who flies to Africa to recover a music box he gave her--and to betray England. Michael T. Weiss and Olivia D'Abo do the honours as the voices of Tarzan and Jane and Mandy Moore and Phil Collins provide the vocals for two new songs. Like many of Disney's straight-to-video "sequels", the animation and story aren't up to par with the original; but the kids won't care. Ages 3 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs, Amazon.com
Jason And The Argonauts | DVD | (28/09/2015)
from £4.99
| Saving you £8.00 (160.32%)
| RRP This version of Jason and the Argonauts is not a remake of the classic 1963 Ray Harryhausen feature, but a new re-telling of the Greek legend. It takes just as many liberties with the saga, but--with a running time twice as long as the original--it packs in much more of the story, building to an exciting finale filled with betrayal, retribution and copious sword-play. Made by mini-series specialists Hallmark, who also produced a lavish version of Homer's The Odyssey (1997), only the rapid fades where the commercial breaks would be really give away the fact that this is a TV feature. The multinational cast is variable, and while Jason London is unhappily wooden in the title role, such stars as Denis Hopper and Frank Langella are good value, American accents aside. Coming straight from the big screen sword and sandal epic, Gladiator, Derek Jacobi adds sheer class, while Jolene Blalock makes a breathtaking debut as Medea. The visual atmosphere is strong; the superb cinematography varying between lush beauty and the stark, sun-bleached look of Pitch Black. Production values are excellent, with several increasingly powerful and spectacular action set-pieces incorporating outstanding (for TV) CGI effects, the whole being immeasurably lifted by British composer Simon Boswell's splendid musical score.--Gary S. Dalkin
