Based on T.S. Eliot's play, Pizzetti's setting of the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in the twelfth century is one of the most powerful of twentieth-century operas. This special performance, with the great bass Ruggero Raimondi in the leading role, was filmed live in the evocative Basilica di San Nicola, Bari, which dates from the time of the historical events on which this compelling music-drama is based.
