Black Beauty | DVD | (01/09/2003)

| RRP It would be easy to pass by this movie, based on Anna Sewell's famous novel Black Beauty, on the assumption that it's dated and twee. Well, perhaps it is a little, but the sheer quality of the whole enterprise places it in the front rank of children's cinema classics. Screenwriter Wolf Mankowitz's ability to harness both literary and popular techniques in the same work (also true of his written fiction) remains unsurpassed in this captivating tale of Beauty's eventful life, from being raised as a foal by the devoted Joe (Lester), then passing through the hands of various owners before being purchased by, supposedly, Miss Sewell herself, to be once more cared for by a now-adult Joe who is in her employ. Along the way, Beauty passes through the hands of gypsies, a circus owner, a family of aristocrats and is even ridden into war, with each episode being expertly cast (Mower is in particularly fine form as a mad, bad and dangerous army officer) and produced to the highest cinematic standards--even the exterior lighting is perfect. Absolutely recommended. The 4:3 DVD is a transfer of exceptionally high quality and includes the cinema trailer, an image gallery of stills and collector-enthusing promotional ephemera (presented in a thumb-saving slideshow format) and, rather incongruously, a trailer for Help! I'm a Fish!--Roger Thomas

A Seance to Contact the Spirit of Diana | DVD | (06/12/2004)

| Saving you £8.00 (66.72%)
| RRP The Spirit of Diana attempts to unearth the truth behind the deaths of Princess Diana and her lover, Dodi Al-Fayed, in a car crash in Paris in 1997, by unconventional means--holding three séances in an attempt to contact the Princess's spirit. Not surprisingly, the makers of the programme appear to have undergone a taste bypass, from choosing the tinkling piano musak played throughout to employing sycophantic presentation by veteran Avengers actor Patrick Macnee. If you haven't already slipped into a diabetic coma from the sugar overdose that is the first segment (mainly the gushings of various "confidantes" of Diana, who are almost as keen to depict her as a latter-day saint as they are to spill the beans on her troubled love life), then the séances themselves will surely finish you off. The first séance, conducted by medium Jane Hamilton-Parker, begins promisingly as she correctly identifies one awestruck participant's link with Diana as being her work with AIDS sufferers in Zimbabwe. However, Jane's accuracy rapidly declines from this point, as does that of Craig, her husband and fellow medium, in the second séance. The pair are clearly fishing for information from their subjects and are nonplussed, if not downright tetchy when contradicted. Any credibility the programme may have left is destroyed by the third séance, presided over by "clairvoyant channeller" Patricia Bankins and her invisible "spirit guide", St Germain. Unfortunately for Patricia, when she's possessed by St Germain's spirit, she's also possessed of his bizarre German accent and facial tics--most distracting. There are no earth-shattering revelations from this programme about the circumstances of Diana's death, so conspiracy theorists will be disappointed. The statements made by all three mediums about Diana's state of mind are no more revealing than anything that's already been covered extensively by the tabloids. On the DVD: Unless you're keen to read the biographies of the shameless individuals who appear in The Spirit of Diana, there are no DVD special features as such. You can't help feeling that this is reflective of the shoddy nature of the programme itself. --Alison Drury

Silas Marner | DVD | (09/10/2000)

| RRP Silas Marner, a member of a strict religious community, is wrongly accused of theft and has no choice but to move to a faraway village. For 15 years he lives alone, hoarding the money he makes from his weaving and gaining a reputation as a recluse, a miser and perhaps even a witch. Marner's life changes dramatically one Christmas season, when his gold is stolen and a mysterious woman dies in the woods outside his cottage. She leaves behind a child that Marner, to the surprise of the other villagers, takes into his home to raise as his daughter. The arrival of the infant, who he names Eppie after his mother, transforms Marner. His bitterness evaporates, he no longer cares about his lost money, and he commits himself completely to his adopted child, who grows up into a loving and beautiful daughter. But Marner's happiness may be threatened when Eppie's real father wants to claim Eppie as his own. Ben Kingsley gives a subtle and moving performance as the simple weaver, and a strong cast gives him ample support in this 1985 BBC adaptation of George Eliot's novel. Silas Marner is not particularly complex--it's certainly a more modest undertaking than Eliot's most famous novel, Middlemarch--but this sentimental Victorian tale, filled with historical detail, potential tragedy, heartless villains and the redeeming power of childhood, makes for a very satisfying film. --Simon Leake, Amazon.com
