  Paul McCartney's Live at the Cavern is essentially the video counterpart to his album Run Devil Run and is equally addictive. The legendary Liverpool club--where the Beatles and a great many other Mersey bands cut their musical teeth--has relocated to new premises in the same street, but it's still the most intimate of venues (it holds all of 300 punters) and is of course the obvious place for Macca to stage this wonderful rock & roll retro extravaganza. Oh yes, there was also a secondary audience of several million who watched the show as a Webcast, but at least this meant they weren't queuing at the bar. The music, however, isn't obvious at all. Rather than go down the tried and tested route of rehashing all the rock & roll classics everyone knows, McCartney decided instead to create a show focusing on his own personal favourites from his formative years. This means that we get stuff like "Fabulous", "Blue Jean Bop" and "Honey Hush" rather than the usual over-revived material. This combination of an instantly recognisable style with rather less recognisable songs is as refreshing as an ice-cold Tizer. The all-star band includes Dave "Floyd" Gilmour, Ian "Purple" Paice (looking alarmingly like Mel Smith) and even Pete "Eighteen with a Bullet" Wingfield. The performance is preceded by an interview with His Macship conducted by Jools Holland. --Roger Thomas

  Season 2: Unfortunately, Rachel's brave intention to announce her feelings is scuppered in the season opener "The One With Ross' New Girlfriend". It doesn't matter how great her hair looks (a real-life accident when a friend cut it with a razor), or how many sneaky tricks she tries to separate them. Ultimately it takes a peculiar doppelganger to lure the new girl away in "TOW Russ" (Schwimmer credited as "Snaro"). The Friends couldn't be happier to have the angst and tension relieved, and "TOW Ross and Rachel... You Know" is unsurprisingly an all-time fan favourite. This was straightforward compared to the other side of Ross' love life in "TOW the Lesbian Wedding" though. Initiating another "will they, won't they?" subplot was the introduction of Richard (Tom Selleck) as a new flame for Monica. Highlights for the other characters all centred on the Emmy-winning two-part "The One After the Super Bowl" with a stunning cameo list including Brooke Shields, Chris Isaak, Dan Castellaneta (Homer from The Simpsons), Jean-Claude Van Damme and Julia Roberts (whom Perry subsequently dated for a short while). Another great highlight was Chandler and Joey's ineptitude in "TOW the Baby on the Bus", which also featured Chrissie Hynde giving Phoebe's "Smelly Cat" its best ever rendition on guitar. To leave viewers hanging, the year ended with Rachel in understandable uncertainty over "TOW Barry And Mindy's Wedding" (her ex-fiancé and ex-best friend). --Paul Tonks

  There's a new school teacher at Sleepy Hollow: Ichabod Crane. His manners and education appeal to the wives and daughters in the hamlet but his strange looks make the men suspicious. Ichabod has such a high opinion of himself that he tries to woo Katrina Van Tassel the beautiful young daughter of the wealthiest farmer in the district who everyone in the community thinks should marry the handsome blacksmith Brom Bones. The villagers tell Ichabod tales about the headless horseman who it is believed rides out every night to look for his lost head but he pretends that he is not scared of ghosts and sets off for the Van Tassels believing he will marry Katrina. Brom sees a way to terrify Ichabod by posing as the headless horseman but then another headless horseman appears...

  Primarily aimed at fanatic completists, The Prisoner 35th Anniversary Companion gives us an alternative version of the opening episode "Arrival" recently rediscovered from Canadian archival material, along with the broadcast version for comparison. The collection also has text files on associative material like the score for the music, the novelisations and the Dinky model of the mini-moke, clips of the interval bumpers, alternative clips of the opening credits and a sequence in which the opening credits shot of a filing cabinet labelled "Resignations" is reshot in a variety of languages for foreign markets. The episode included reminds us, in both its versions, what an innovative and sinister show The Prisoner was--George Baker in particular is an impressive foil to Patrick McGoohan. There are also text files on the careers of McGoohan and his collaborator George Markstein, as well as an extended interview with Bernard Williams in which he talks frankly about the difficulties of producing a show whose scripts were being written by the star as it was being shot, and tells us of the last-minute improvisation of the sinister balloon, Rover. There is also a short documentary about the show, its fans and the memorabilia shop at Portmeirion, plus a Prisoner parody Renault ad. On the DVD: The Prisoner 35th Anniversary Companion is presented in standard 4:3 television visual ratio; the mono sound has not worn well, especially in the alternative version of "Arrival" where it is at times painfully scratchy. The interface is user-confusing; if you don't already know the shape of The Village it is not immediately obvious that the menu continues on two screens. The packaging includes a lavish booklet that includes a facsimile of the production notes for the show. --Roz Kaveney

  Season 5: Divorce number two is immediately on the cards as the year opens with "T.O. After Ross Says Rachel". As of this point, Ross' character undergoes some extreme personality changes (which apparently lost Schwimmer many female fans). His incessant whining drives all the Friends to distraction, especially in "T.O.W. Ross Moves In" with Chandler and Joey. Later things get uncomfortable both at work and at home when he goes through a period of rage ("T.O.W. Ross' Sandwich"). While all this downplays his failed relationship with Rachel, the real idea is to allow focus on the secret pairing of Chandler and Monica after a night of passion in London. This made for a return to the show's appealingly silly atmosphere as poor Joey is made piggy-in-the-middle of everyone's secrets. Building to "T.O.W. Everybody Finds Out", the silliness pauses for some genuinely touching interplay between Perry and Cox. The previous year's semi-serious thread about Phoebe's birth gets forgotten fast: to distract the viewer she's introduced to Gary (Michael Rapaport) in "T.O.W. The Cop". This leads to some hilarious parodying with Phoebe interrogated about apartment hunting, and the guys excited and then scared in "T.O. W. The Ride Along". She's more than over him by the time of the two-part finale "T.O.W. In Vegas" though, especially since she missed out on London. Just in case fans thought Chandler and Monica had permanently stolen the spotlight, a cliffhanger shocks expectation again with Ross and Rachel bursting out of a chapel... --Paul Tonks
