Downtime | DVD | (07/06/2004)

| RRP Down Time is a strange attempt to mix concrete Northern social realism and Bruce-Willis-style cliffhanger thrills, with balls of fire billowing up empty lift shafts and so forth. Paul McGann plays an ex-police psychologist, retired through ill health, drafted in to dissuade miserable single mother Chrissy (Susan Lynch) from throwing herself and her child off the top of a tower block. He succeeds, though in so doing betrays some of the problems that caused him to quit his job. He then pursues Chrissy romantically, during the course of which he, she and her little boy become stuck in the tower block lift, which then starts ascending and descending at random when hoodlum squatters break into the control box and mess about with it for an idle laugh. With its bizarre and somewhat improbable scenario, its odd mix of whimsical light romance, grim-up-North-style melodrama and explosive stunt action, Down Time as a whole doesn't really come off. The behaviour of key characters borders on the arbitrary, the "yobs" who cause all the problems go curiously unpunished and the ending barely makes sense. However, the lengthy mid-sequence in which McGann rescues (and is rescued by) Chrissy from the perilously dangling lift is, though predictable in its outcome, gripping enough. --David Stubbs

Paul Newman Collection Vol.2 - Silver Chalice/The Helen Morgan Story/The Outrage/Rachel Rachel/When Time Ran Out | DVD | (21/09/2009)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP The Silver Chalice (1954): He looks like Marlon Brando some reviewers said of this movie's 29-year-old star but those comparisons would soon end. Soon to impress with his own intense brilliance Paul Newman made his movie debut in this Biblical saga in the mode of Quo Vadis and The Robe. Set in Rome during the early Christian era it focuses on an ill-fated sculptor sold into slavery and torn between his adoring wife (Pier Angeli) and a wily temptress (Virginia Mayo) - and threatened in his work by a power-mad sorcerer (Jack Palance) bent on overturning Christianity and becoming his own true messiah. The Silver Chalice's cast also includes Lorne Greene E.G. Marshall and a blonde Natalie Wood. But Newman is the movie's heart. This young man director Victor Saville predicted is destined for great things. The Helen Morgan Story (1957): Helen Morgan has beauty talent success. Yet they mean nothing to her without the love of Larry Maddox the bootlegger who leads Helen on and drops her so often she finally hits bottom. Set in the roaring '20s The Helen Morgan Story is also Maddox's story. In his fifth film Paul Newman plays the mobster with slick assuredness. In her final movie Ann Blyth portrays the troubled songstress (and Show Boat original cast member) with Gogi Grant performing vocals on signature Morgan tunes. Appearances by '20s icons Rudy Vallee Walter Winchell and Morgan's real-life accompanist Jimmy McHugh bring bracing authenticity to this tale of a legend whose songs could heal any heart but her own. The Outrage (1964): A notorious bandit confesses to rape and murder and justice is sure to be swift. But wait. Witnesses to the outrage come forward each offering different versions of the events. Does truth lie in the eyes of the beholder? A year after Hud star Paul Newman and director Martin Ritt teamed again and gave the Japanese classic Rashomon an Old West setting crafting a brisk and challenging drama far removed from the norm in film fare (A.H. Weiler The New York Times). Newman drawing deep into his talent reservoir portrays the brazen desperado at the center of conflicting events. Laurence Harvey Claire Bloom Edward G. Robinson and William Shatner offer luminous support in this tale of a quest for truth. And of the humanity or inhumanity behind it. Rachel Rachel (1968): New England schoolteacher Rachel Cameron's life is small and safe. Too small and too safe for a warmhearted woman who wants to do something - anything - to keep from slipping into spinsterhood. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward joined their stellar talents on this powerfully human movie he debuting as a director and she giving one of her hallmark screen performances. Both won New York Film Critics and Golden Globe awards for their work and the film garnered four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. The Newmans teamed afterward on other masterful films (The Glass Menagerie Mr. & Mrs. Bridge Empire Falls). But for tenderness insight and artistry none surpasses Rachel Rachel. When Time Ran Out (1980): Enough stars to light five marquees. Enough subplots of passion power and greed to fill 10 movies. Plus fiery special effects galore. A South Pacific island's dormant volcano unexpectedly erupts in fury. Among those imperiled are wildcat oil driller Paul Newman hotel baron William Holden and Jacqueline Bisset as a PR executive who must choose between them. Which familiar faces will survive when there's no such thing as safe ground? Watch - and watch out - for yourself. As the lava flows so also flows rare and rousing screen excitement!

Red Letters | DVD | (09/02/2004)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Red Letters has all the makings of a classic Hitchcock thriller: a hapless hero who thinks he's smarter than he is, an unpredictable femme fatale, snaky plot twists, and an all-around excellent cast. Professor Dennis Burke (Peter Coyote) wrote a sizzling erotic novel called Red Letters 20 years ago--but since then his wife has died from a protracted illness and he's been fired from a job because of an affair with a student. So he's grateful to be given a second chance at a small California college where he lectures on Hawthorne--only all his students are more interested in Burke's own writing than Hawthorne's. Burke starts receiving letters for the former resident of his apartment that are from a woman in prison named Lydia (Nastassja Kinski) with a 30-year sentence for murder. Burke writes back and their correspondence takes a turn for the intimate when she asks him to visit her. Burke isn't sure what he's getting into, and his life is further complicated when the daughter of the college Dean (Fairuza Balk) starts making advances. Suddenly Lydia has escaped, his best friend (Jeremy Piven) is arrested for hacking into the prison computer system, and the Dean suspects Burke of trifling with his daughter. The movie loses focus at the very end, but until then it's a smart, well-written, subtle, and unpredictable film that actually gives its characters some depth and grit. Even the more implausible moments are fun and engaging, making this well worth checking out. --Bret Fetzer

Black Knight / Big Momma's House | DVD | (10/03/2003)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP A predictable vehicle for the resistable Martin Lawrence, Black Knight is yet another rerun of Mark Twain's Connecticut Yankee at the Court of King Arthur concept which here plays like a horror-free, considerably less funny take on Army of Darkness. Jamal (Lawrence), minion in a mediaeval theme park, reaches into a moat for a magic amulet and is transported to the 14th century, where he is appalled by the toilet facilities, pals around with a disgraced knight (an equally disgraced Tom Wilkinson), romances a feminist lady-in-waiting (Marsha Thomason), introduces soul music to the court in a bit done better in A Knight's Tale, and becomes the legendary black knight to help the rebels overthrow the wicked king. It has a bigger, more lavish feel than most of Lawrence's makeshift knockabouts, but that may also be why it is even less funny, since his rants are rather reined-in and his screen character comes across as just overly pleased with himself rather than a comic foul-up who turns heroic. --Kim Newman No-one tries very hard in Big Momma's House so your enjoyment of this Martin Lawrence vehicle pretty much depends on how much amusement you are able to derive from a guy dressed up as a very ample woman. The setup is of the eye-rolling, only-in-Hollywood nature: Lawrence, as detective Malcolm Turner, is after a killer, and apparently the only way to capture him is to pose as the bad guy's ex-girlfriend's grandmother, who--the film cannot stress this point too much--is quite large. Apparently, Sherry (Nia Long), the young woman in question--she's as attractive as Big Momma is, well, you know--is none too bright, for she falls for Malcolm's ruse, which of course ostensibly amuses mainly because it's so transparent. Paul Giamatti is wasted as Malcolm's partner, while director Raja Gosnell's clunky sense of comic rhythm is bewildering, because he used to be an editor (he brought a similar lack of magic to Home Alone 3). Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps is far more accomplished, versatile and funny. --David Kronke
