Washington DC-based PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the most influential organisation of its kind in the US with support across the media and fashion industry. Recorded in New York in 2001, and hosted by the ever-enthusiastic Paul McCartney, this show throws in everything from self-conscious alternative comedy turns to Sarah McLaughlin's musical tribute to the late Linda McCartney--whose championing of animal welfare is reflected in video clips. There's the presentation of the PETA award in her memory to Pamela Anderson-Lee, as well as an amusing interlude featuring the shopping mall antics of veggie turn-on Chris P Carrott. The event ends with a shambolic but enjoyable run-through of hits from the B52s, with a guest spot from Chrissie Hynde, then a breezy rendering of rock & roll standards from McCartney and a backing band of seasoned veterans--including neat guitar work from Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour. Throw in a handful of PETA celebrity promos and you've got a video you're unlikely to play often, but which is a varied and entertaining indication of the support this organisation now enjoys. --Richard Whitehouse

Brian De Palma's inspired rock 'n' roll fusion of Faust The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture of Dorian Gray boasts an Oscar-nominated score by Paul Williams who also stars as an evil record producer who not only steals the work of composer/performer Winslow Leach (William Finley) but gets him locked up in Sing Sing - and that's not the worst that happens to him along the way. Few revenge scenarios have ever been so amply justified but the film is also constantly aware of the satirical possibilities offered by the 1970s music industry exemplified by Gerrit Graham's hilariously camp glam-rock star. Jessica Harper (Suspiria) appears in her first major role as the naïve but ambitious singer on whom Winslow secretly dotes. Prodigiously inventive both musically and visually this is one of De Palm's most entertaining romps not least because it was so clearly a labour of love.
