  • The Fast Show Live [2001]The Fast Show Live | DVD | (18/11/2002) from £6.23   |  Saving you £9.76 (156.66%)   |  RRP £15.99

Recorded live at London's Hammersmith Apollo in 1998, The Fast Show Live features all of the original cast of the highly successful sketch series (Caroline Aherne excepted) including Paul Whitehouse, Simon Day, Charlie Higson and Arabella Weir and practically all of their myriad characters and catchphrases. This live show effectively marks a last hurrah for The Fast Show team, with routines like the Coughing Bob Fleming singalong reworked from the series. However, as a feat of inventive stage management and quick costume changing, they do manage to maintain the Fastness of the TV series live. It was the catchphrases which earned the series its immense popularity and they raise large, predictable cheers of recognition when wheeled out at the Apollo, from Unlucky Alf's opening "Oh, bugger!" to the "Suits you, sir!" of the intrusively camp boys in the menswear department. The show's reliance on these might have been annoying if it weren't for the fact that they were built on such esoteric, peripheral and complex sketch and character material. Who but the Fast Show team would have thought of taking the mickey out of bad European TV, even inventing their own mock-Esperanto to do so? Or similarly, lampooned all those old 1930s music hall comedians whose risque jokes are incomprehensible to modern audiences? These, mixed in with modern archetypes like Ron Manager or the endlessly poignant Ted and Ralph made The Fast Show at once comfortingly familiar yet endlessly surprising viewing. They were influential also: Colin Hunt is surely a crude prototype for The Office's David Brent. On the DVD The Fast Show Live has no special features on this edition, disappointingly. --David Stubbs

  • Chaplin [1991]Chaplin | DVD | (20/05/2002) from £10.92   |  Saving you £2.07 (18.96%)   |  RRP £12.99

Chaplin, Sir Richard Attenborough's biographical film of the life and times of the famous comic, is a little thin as a narrative, but it is so charmingly creative and ultimately moving that it's hard to worry about the deficits. Robert Downey Jr does an excellent job re-creating Chaplin's graceful slapstick and getting inside the silent-film superstar's head over the years of triumph, defeat, scandal, official persecution, exile and inner peace. A huge cast portray the allies, friends, lovers and enemies in Chaplin's life, including Moira Kelly as his final, long-time wife Oona, Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks, Geraldine Chaplin as Charlie's mother and James Woods as a prosecutor working hard to nail Chaplin for anti-American sentiments. Attenborough declines to tell the story in a flat, linear way, employing such clever techniques as detailing one chapter in Chaplin's life as a silent comedy. The climactic scene set at an Oscar tribute for Chaplin will get the tears flowing. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Robbie The Reindeer In Hooves Of Fire [2000]Robbie The Reindeer In Hooves Of Fire | DVD | (27/11/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

Robbie the Reindeer is as short as many of the made-for-TV classics that have preceded it. However, so much action, zippy dialogue and witty visual puns have been packed into its 29-minute running time that you'd swear it was longer. The content of the film, like many new animations and cartoons, is geared slightly in favour of older audiences, because of its sexual innuendos and adult comedy, but the kids will love the slapstick comedy and loveable characters. Robbie's father is another stop-motion favourite, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and pop is keen to see his loveable--but lazy--son follow in his famous hoof prints. The adult theme continues in the shape of the storyline, which was actually inspired more by Rocky than by Rudolph. As in Rocky, there's a supportive female (Donner) and a crusty trainer (Old Jingle). Together they help Robbie get in shape for the Reindeer Games, where he'll have the chance to show Santa whether he has the right stuff or not. Fans of Aardman Animations should appreciate the detailed animation and clever humour. The cream of Britain's comic crop provides the voices, including Jane Horrocks as Donner. Robbie Williams narrates the story, and Mark Knopfler provides the music. --Kathleen C Fennessy, Amazon.com

A feel-good British comedy in a similar vein to The Full Monty and Bend it like Beckham with a nod to Slumdog Millionaire, released on DVD 13th May 2013 The Cowboys are a local Sunday soccer team who always seem to finish bottom of the league. Now, they've finally run out of money and after losing yet another match they do what they always do to drown their sorrows - go to the pub and head off for an Indian. Barred from every Indian restaurant in town due to their bad behaviour, there's only the Taj Tandoori left to go for the Cowboys last team meal. When it comes to paying the bill the realization of not having enough money finally hits home but instead of calling the Police the owner offers the Cowboys a sponsorship deal they just can't refuse. Financing the team to keep it going the Cowboys in exchange must work as waiters in his restaurant, rename the team the Taj Cowboys and sport a ridiculous new football strip. Unknown to the Cowboys the restaurateur is really using them as security against a local racketeer run by a psychotic gangster known only as American Bob (Robert Vaughn). Reasoning with American Bob only leads to more misery and destruction but when the chips are down the Cowboys and the Indians form the most unlikely of alliances as they take on American Bob and his mighty bandits head on. Together they'll prove that... Eleven united can never be defeated. Special Features: Trailer Commentary with Director Jeremy Wooding and Producer John Adams Four Behind-The-Scenes Featurettes.

  • Mystery Of Chopin, The / The Strange Case Of Delphina PotockaMystery Of Chopin, The / The Strange Case Of Delphina Potocka | DVD | (20/04/2001) from £21.58   |  Saving you £-1.59 (-8.00%)   |  RRP £19.99

Tony Palmer's The Mystery of Chopin combines two short films about the composer. In the late 1940s, a newly Communist Poland needs its national heroes to be squeaky clean: The Strange Case of Delphina Potocka documents the persecution and mysterious death of Paulina who claimed to own letters showing Chopin to be a viciously anti-Semitic egomaniac; Penelope Wilton is stunning as the dogged, and possibly deranged, Paulina and John Shrapnel, Corin Redgrave, John Bird and John Fortuneare memorable as the men who persecute her to protect Chopin's good name. These scenes are shot in a gritty black and white; colour is reserved for the dreamy and passionate scenes in which a brooding Paul Rhys moves through pastoral and revolutionary landscapes as Chopin and the inserted moments of Valentina Igoshina playing the music which is Chopin's true legacy. In the other film, Igoshina plays a selection of the standard works featured in excerpts in the film; she is a technically adroit performer, keen on the poetry of the work--but Palmer's camera is at times a little too in love with her luminous good looks. On the DVD: The DVD has subtitles in German, French and Spanish; the sound quality is excellent--the piano recital has a particularly fine acoustic. --Roz Kaveney
