  Few would put up too much of a convincing argument that Cars is Pixar’s best film. But when merchandising is brought into the equation, it’s easily its most lucrative, and it certainly has a legion of fans. With good reason too. If you can forgive the very flabby second act, the story of Lightning McQueen as he attempts to race his way to glory is really good fun, complete with some very clever characterisations of the cars themselves. It’s also a stunning looking film, and that’s where the Blu-ray disc comes in. For even if you’re one of those who believes that Cars is the weakest Pixar movie, there’s little doubting just how wonderful it looks in high definition. Take the race sequence at the start. It’s a scene that could sell a thousand 1080p television sets on the spot, so amazing does it look. It’s matched by a cinema-standard surround sound mix that rewards every penny invested in home cinema hardware. And, to be fair, the film itself is still pretty good. Cars is too long, certainly, and it’s lacking some of the charms of Pixar’s other movies. But it’s rollicking good fun, and perhaps has been harshly treated by some reviewers simply by comparison to other Pixar features. For compared with much of what everyone else is putting out, Cars is both superior family entertainment, and one of the best looking Blu-ray discs on the market.   Brutus Jones (Paul Robeson) is a handsome, ambitious and devout churchgoer from the backwoods who leaves to become a Pullman porter in New York City. Once there, he gives in to his newfound world of fast money and loose women falling for Undine (Fredi Washington), the girl of his friend Jeff (Frank H. Wilson). Having failed to pull a quick-buck money deal, Jones shoots craps against Jeff before discovering that the dice are crooked. When Jeff lies dead after a fight, Jones is found guilty of murder and sentenced to life on a chain gang. Desperate to escape, Jones stages a breakout and kills a warder. Making good his escape to a Caribbean island, Jones eventually becomes the Island's ruler: The Emperor Jones. But will his sins catch up with him?This was the film that made a star of Paul Robeson and its significance was that it was the first film to have an African American as its leading man.

  Shot on the streets of Kingston and set to a rich reggae score by Sly and Robbie, the highest grossing film in Jamaican cinema (according to the producers) is a simple cops-and-gangsters thriller that drops the usual two-fisted cop clichés into the slums of a developing nation. Charismatic Paul Campbell (who starred in the previous Jamaican hit Dancehall Queen) is Capone, a Jamaican Dirty Harry who wades into shoot-outs with both guns blazing. His maverick reputation lands him in Kingston, his hometown, where he tracks a gun-smuggling scheme to his boyhood friend Ratty (Mark Danvers), now the ambitious right-hand man to the local kingpin. It's a familiar story and the timid script always chooses action over drama. Capone's violent methods are never questioned, even when he's faced with old friends instead of faceless hoods, and he is given unimaginable leeway to shoot his way through the criminal population. Shot on digital video and released to theatres in a smeary-looking transfer, the video release is mastered from the digital source and looks infinitely better than its theatrical incarnation: crisp, bright and vivid. The energetic style helps the picture overcome some of its generic cop-movie clichés, but the real draw is the street grit of clapboard houses, corrugated metal fences and concrete brick homes: the matter-of-fact poverty of Kingston's slums. --Sean Axmaker
