Quai Des Orfevres (1947): Blacklisted for his daring ""anti-French"" masterpiece Le Corbeau Henri-Georges Clouzot returned to cinema four years later with the provocative 1947 crime fiction adaptation Quai des Orfevres. Set within the vibrant dancehalls and historic crime corridors of 1940s Paris ambitious performer Jenny Lamour her covetous piano-playing husband Maurice Martineau and their devoted confidante Dora Monier attempt to cover one another's tracks when a sexually ogreish high-society acquaintance is murdered. Enter Inspector Antoine whose seasoned instincts lead him down a circuitous path in this classic whodunnit murder mystery. Le Corbeau (1943): An anonymous series of poison-pen letters spread suspicion and fear amongst the population of a small French town. The author of the letters who signs himself ""The Raven "" has enough defamatory information to provoke tension and suicide... Wages of Fear (1952): The film that continues to serve as the benchmark for Clouzot's magnificent career. The Wages of Fear established the writer-director on a truly international level after carrying off major prizes at the Cannes and Berlin film festivals. Part road movie part suspense thriller the plot is high-tension simplicity itself. In the South American jungle supplies of nitro-glycerine are urgently needed at a remote oil field. The unscrupulous American oil company pays four out-of-work men (Yves Montand Charles Vanel - the creepy cop in Les Diaboliques Folco Lulli and Peter Van Eyck) to deliver the supplies in two sets of drivers: a tension magnified thousand fold by the unforgiving heat the lure of filthy lucre and the rough and rocky roads where the slightest jolt can result in agonising death. Which of the disparate desperate desperadoes will survive the white-knuckle journey and claim the loot and the glory?

1989 was a year of revolution: it marked the collapse of communism in Eastern and Central Europe and and an end to an entire way of life for millions of people behind the Iron Curtain. Beginning in Hungary the retreat from communism picked up speed over the summer when the Poles won an overwhelming victory in free elections over their pro-Soviet rulers. In the fall East Germany and Czechoslovakia achieved freedom with surprisingly little violence. Only Romania at the end of the year witnessed a savage battle in the capital and the summary execution of the most notorious of Eastern Europe's dictators Nicolae Ceausescu.

  • Scourge Of The Worlds - A Dungeons And Dragons Adventure [2003]Scourge Of The Worlds - A Dungeons And Dragons Adventure | DVD | (06/10/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Scourge of Worlds: A Dungeons and Dragons Adventure is not a film sequel to Dungeons and Dragons (2000), but the DVD equivalent of an interactive role-playing novel. There are over 900 short digitally animated sequences, leading every so often to a choice to be made with the remote control, resulting after about 90 minutes in one of four possible endings. Just as the original D&D was inspired by The Lord of the Rings, the scenarios here are Tolkien rehashed: a newly arisen darkness is seeking an ancient ultimate weapon, against which stand a human warrior, Regdar, a halfling, Lidda and an elven wizard, Mialee. The CGI is closer to Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles than the pseudo-realism of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, the electronic score is tiresome and the contemporary American voice acting, using such expressions as "head's up" and "…or something", is laughable. What of the interactive element? Essentially it offers two equally uninteresting paths at the end of every major scene--uninteresting because it's impossible to care what happens to the marionette-like stereotypes no matter what they do. While the adventure does offer plenty of well-choreographed cartoon-style action, interacting with Scourge of Worlds is ultimately about as much fun as watching someone else play a computer game--and that's just the first time through. On the DVD: Scourge of Worlds: A Dungeons and Dragons Adventure fills the DVD with the 900-plus animated sequences, presumably leaving no room for extras. The only options are between stereo sound and far more involving Dolby Digital 5.1. The image appears to have been taken directly from a digital master and is flawless, the images only limited by the TV-standard computer rendering. --Gary S Dalkin

In 1972, before the internet, before the explosion of the adult film industry, Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried; Les Miserables). Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the high-life when she fell for and married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard; TVs The Killing). As Linda Lovelace she became an international sensation-less centerfold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with some 'impressive skills'. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative to the world-and herself, as the survivor of a far darker story. The all-star cast includes; Emmy Award winner Hank Azaria (The Simpsons), BAFTA winner Juno Temple (The Dark Night Rises), Adam Brody (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World), Academy Award nominee James Franco (127 Hours), Golden Globe nominee Chris Noth (Sex and The City), Emmy Winner Bobby Cannavale (TVs Nurse Jackie), Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games), Robert Patrick (Gangster Squad), Debi Mazar (Collateral), Eric Roberts (The Expendables, The Dark Night), Academy Award nominee Sharon Stone (Casino, Basic Instinct), and Academy Award nominee Chloe Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry).
