Alfred Hitchcock himself called this 1934 British edition of his famous kidnapping story "the work of a talented amateur", while his 1956 Hollywood remake was the consummate act of a professional director. Be that as it may, this earlier movie still has its intense admirers who prefer it over the Jimmy Stewart--Doris Day version, and for some sound reasons. Tighter, wittier, more visually outrageous (back-screen projections of Swiss mountains, a whirly-facsimile of a fainting spell), the film even has a female protagonist (Edna Best in the mom part) unafraid to go after the bad guys herself with a gun. (Did Doris Day do that that? Uh-uh.) While the 1956 film has an intriguing undercurrent of unspoken tensions in nuclear family politics, the 1934 original has a crisp air of British optimism glummed up a bit when a married couple (Best and Leslie Banks) witness the murder of a spy and discover their daughter stolen away by the culprits. The chase leads to London and ultimately to the site of one of Hitch's most extraordinary pieces of suspense (though on this count, it must be said, the later version is superior). Take away distracting comparisons to the remake, and this Man Who Knew Too Much is a milestone in Hitchcock's early career. Peter Lorre makes his British debut as a scarred, scary villain. --Tom Keogh

  • The Slim Shady Show [2001]The Slim Shady Show | DVD | (05/11/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

The first time that the opening episode of Slim Shady Version II was shown to the public as a prelude to Eminem's live set on the Anger Management tour in America, it received critical acclaim. The point was clear, ran the consensus: by juxtaposing cartoon images of his split personality alongside South Park characters, Marshall Mathers was querying why their anti-social behaviour is satire and his is offensive. More episodes then turned up on the Web leading MTV to commission these nine five-minute shorts in which Slim Shady and Marshall Mathers run around taking drugs, swearing, attempting to have sex and beating up pop stars such as N'Stink and Pristina Gagulera. Sadly, those kind of lame puns are about as funny as it gets. A typical scene runs like this: the boys spot Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and they beat them up. That's it. Worse still, any sense of characterisation that places in context the anger and prejudice of Eminem's recorded work is lost here, leaving dumb and rather ugly misogyny to stand alone. A brief documentary about the making of the shorts is equally as grim and proves that cartoons really shouldn't be made by people with no sense of humour.--Ian Watson

  • Captain Jack [1998]Captain Jack | DVD | (11/02/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Based loosely on a true story, Captain Jack is an Ealing-style whimsical comedy-drama about the triumph of everyday eccentrics. Captain Jack (Bob Hoskins) is a Whitby boat captain sick of hearing how the he wants to celebrate his predecessor's "discovery" of the Arctic by recreating his voyage on its 200th anniversary. Jack breaks harbour regulations and finds himself on the run from the Coastguard and Navy, accompanied by a crew of landlubbers including sisters played by Anna Massey and Gemma Jones. Sadie Frost is a passionate young stowaway who has her eye on Aussie Peter McDonald, while making up the party is David Troughton. Back on shore there are entertaining supporting roles for Patrick Malahide, Michelle Dotrice and Maureen Lipman, wife of writer Jack Rosenthal. Rosenthal screenplay isn't especially amusing, but he does manage to pack in all the expected feel-good developments, as well as including appropriate Dracula (1979) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) jokes. There's a whale, a pair of polar bears, a storm, lots of bonding and a gruff but warm-hearted sensibility throughout. Another winning piece of entertainment from Yorkshire, the county that gave the world The Full Monty. On the DVD: the only extra is a terribly British trailer, presented non-anamorphically. The main feature however is presented in an excellent 1.77:1 anamorphically enhanced widescreen transfer. The picture is crisp and detailed, with not a blemish anywhere. The stereo sound is everything this kind of film needs without being in anyway spectacular. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Will Hay - Ask A Policeman [1939]Will Hay - Ask A Policeman | DVD | (03/12/2001) from £9.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Ask a Policeman is arguably Will Hay's all-round best film, not so much for the qualities of his familiar star performance but for the mix of laughs and thrills in the manner of The Ghost Train or The Cat and the Canary. Hay plays Sgt Doubtfoot, commander of the police station in the coastal hamlet of Turnbotham Round, who hasn't made an arrest in 10 years. This is not because of the area's low crime rate, but because most of the poaching, pilfering and swindling in the village is the responsibility of his own constables, the geriatric Harbottle (Moore Marriott) and literal wide-boy Albert (Graham Moffatt). When the Chief Constable threatens to close the station, the bumbling coppers set out to investigate some crimes and go after a smuggling squire who has been using a local legend as a cover story (and planting his signal light on top of the police station itself). Director Marcel Varnel, working from a script by Sidney Gilliatt and Val Guest, manage some fine semi-horror business with "the 'earse of the 'headless 'orseman", a flaming carriage which dashes about the landscape, and a risky venture into Devil's Cave to find the old smuggler's route that turns out to lead to the cellar of Harbottle's general stores. Hay and his sidekicks are in top form, squabbling surreally over every possible filched coin from the police outing fund box or trying to sort out the plot, and there's a sublime scene as they try to get a clue out of the impossibly ancient Harbottle's even more elderly Dad (also Marriott). --Kim Newman

  • Carry On Henry [1971]Carry On Henry | DVD | (27/08/2001) from £13.97   |  Saving you £-3.98 (-39.80%)   |  RRP £9.99

Shot in the bright postal colours of a seaside postcard, Carry on Henry applies the usual Carry On sniggering to the married life of Henry VIII. Talbot Rothwell's script is standard bedroom farce and full of jokes about choppers, while the threat of beheading and the actuality of torture are constantly present but only as the terrible things that happen to cartoon characters who will be back next time. Sid James turns in one of his better performances as the endlessly lecherous and fickle Henry, married to Joan Sims and lusting after Barbara Windsor. There is a genuine sexual chemistry between James and Windsor which at times almost breaks open the farce formula. The usual regulars--Kenneth Williams as Thomas Cromwell, Terry Scott as Cardinal Wolsey, Charles Hawtrey as Sir Roger--do their usual turns; Williams is more subdued than usual, while Hawtrey hugely enjoys playing the Queen's secret lover. This was not one of the high points of the series, but it has its own curious charm. On the DVD: The DVD has no extras whatever, but is a good clean print in 1.77:1 ratio with crisp mono sound. --Roz Kaveney

  • Copland [1997]Copland | DVD | (22/01/2001) from £11.18   |  Saving you £6.81 (60.91%)   |  RRP £17.99

After making a critically acclaimed debut with the low-budget independent drama Heavy, writer-director James Mangold took on this gritty crime drama, which was highly touted as Sylvester Stallone's long-awaited return to a serious dramatic role. With an illustrious cast of co-stars, including GoodFellas alumni Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta, Stallone plays Freddy Heflin, the ineffectual sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that a group of corrupt New York cops have turned into their own off-duty criminal empire. Deaf in one ear and desperate to prove his worth, the sheriff takes on the cops with standoffish assistance from an Internal Affairs cop (De Niro), resulting in an explosive climactic showdown. The stellar cast can't be beat, and Stallone is quite good as the overweight cop whose pride is on the line. Mangold's script is wildly uneven, but Cop Land still packs a white-knuckled punch. --Jeff Shannon
