  • A Day At The BeachA Day At The Beach | DVD | (15/10/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

A Day at the Beach is one of Roman Polanski's forgotten gems which was previously thought lost. It received a low key theatrical push on its release due to the murder of Polanski's wife and the desire not to cash in on Polanski's name being involved with the lurid Manson murders. The story is a hauntingly accurate and bleak look at alcoholism in which Bernie (Mark Burns) takes his daughter Winnie (Beatie Edney) out for a day at the beach. Peter Sellers co-stars as a gay stall owner in one of his most inventive roles.

  • National Geographic - Beyond The Movie - The Lord Of The Rings [2001]National Geographic - Beyond The Movie - The Lord Of The Rings | DVD | (11/03/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The connection between National Geographic and The Lord of the Rings may seem tentative, but the illuminating TV special Beyond the Movie proves otherwise. While incorporating cast and crew interviews and film clips from director Peter Jackson's 2001 blockbuster The Fellowship of the Ring, this hour-long documentary transcends timely opportunism to explore the myriad inspirations for JRR Tolkien's Middle-Earth fantasy classic, beginning with the influence of Tolkien's idyllic childhood in rural England, which served as the model for his threatened Hobbit paradise. Equally fascinating are the influences of Tolkien's experience in World War I and the "evil" of industrial development on his work, and more directly those of Anglo-Saxon poetry (notably Beowulf) and the mythology of the Finnish Kalevala, which formed the basis of Tolkien's elvish culture. The author's passion for nature conservancy and cultural preservation are what ultimately serve the National Geographic agenda, but eloquent testimonials by archaeologists, anthropologists, and filmmakers make this a most agreeable hour of justified propaganda. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

The Test Tubes have been releasing classic punk anthems since the late 1970's and are still going strong to this day. The DVD features two unique presentations of the band. ""Cattle And Bum"" is an entertaining and creative film constructed by the band themselves. A testament to the humour and energy that the band generated over a decade the film contains live footage old & new promos interviews and plenty of silliness. A classic. ""Live In Manchester"" features an 'as it happened' record of the band at their most uncouth. This archive performance includes much previously unseen footage as the 'Test Tubes' hurtle recklessly through their repertoire. Many of the Test Tubes hits are featured on the DVD with ""Banned From The Pubs"" ""Run Like Hell"" ""Blown Out Again"" and Moped Lads all at their raucous best. The band's back catalogue will be re-released this year along with a brand new album. Sleeve notes on the DVD come from Test Tubes lead singer Peter. • Regan - The Movie [1974]Regan - The Movie | DVD | (06/09/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Regan is classic TV drama that will have you saying, "they don't make 'em like that any more". This is the feature-length pilot to what became the long-running TV series The Sweeney, starring John Thaw and Dennis Waterman as the hard-as-nails Flying Squad double act. The story opens in a south London pub decorated in shades of brown so manifold that it forms a patina on the screen more normally associated with a painterly artist. It's the early 1970s, and Thaw's Inspector Regan is a lone ranger fighting on several fronts including the imminent modernisation of the police force, which he describes as a vision of "hundreds of little grey men working on top of each other, pots of tea and committees". The dialogue is clever, rich and funny. When Regan tries to persuade Carter to work with him on the case he growls: "Mary darling, I'm not trying to start an affair with you." The heroes have thinning hair and bad habits: Regan drinks whiskey in the middle of the day and constantly smokes, he's lost his wife, let down his daughter, and then loses his girlfriend (Maureen Lipman). The filming is wonderfully crafted--shots taken from odd angles, action that surprises and gritty London locations. "You're a copper. You belong like me out in the cold," Regan says to Carter in the last scene as they go off to get a drink out of licensed hours. Not the end, but the start of a beautiful relationship. --Joan Byrne
