  Patrick Troughton stars in this recreation of a lost classic from 1966. The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Polly and Ben to a colony on the swamp planet of Vulcan. Soon after arriving, the Doctor witnesses a brutal murder. Meanwhile, in another part of the colony an ancient crashed space capsule has been discovered in the swamps. The colony's misguided chief scientist opens the capsule and discovers a group of strange metal 'creatures' inside. The creatures appear to be long dead. The Doctor calls the metal creatures 'Daleks' and claims that they are incredibly dangerous. 'Power of the Daleks' was the first Doctor Who story to star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor - broadcast between November and December 1966. Sadly, none of the six original broadcast episodes of 'Power of the Daleks' any longer exist in the BBC Film Archives. However, complete audio recordings of the lost episodes have survived in the hands of private collectors.   Made in 1983, the US TV mini-series Kennedy has Martin Sheen playing a president well before his stint on The West Wing. All of the momentous events of JFK's remarkable term are covered (with actual news footage used to excellent effect), but it is the portrayal of the entire Kennedy family as real, flawed people that gives Kennedy its power. The Kennedys gossip, snipe, joke and bother each other like a real family rather than rigid historical figures or threadbare caricatures. Sheen plays JFK as a man with lofty ideals who is more than willing to dirty his hands to serve his greater purpose. Blair Brown plays Jacqueline Kennedy with a shrewd understanding of politics, but also a whiff of vanity. In addition to the strong performances by both leads, Vincent Gardenia gives a brilliant performance as J Edgar Hoover: stiff, quirky and strange, prurient and moralistic at the same time and boiling with hatred. --Ali Davis

  This underrated teen comedy from 1998 is guilty of being a proud underachiever, and it doesn't bring anything new to the genre, but look closely and you'll find the makings of a much better movie buried under all the keg-party antics. The basic story is typical for this kind of comedy. A young, aspiring writer named Preston (Ethan Embry) has been lusting after class beauty Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt, from TV's Party of Five) for four years of high school, but he's never had the nerve to tell her. Now that they're about to graduate he has finally worked up the courage to write her a soul-baring love letter. At the raucous graduation keg party that takes up most of the movie's 98 minutes, Preston agonises while Amanda's selfish jock ex-boyfriend tries to win her back, and delivering his love letter turns out to be more difficult than he ever imagined. What's interesting about Can't Hardly Wait has little to do with its attractive leads, however. The most engagingly real and entertaining characters are the misfits who show up in the sub-plots, including a geek (Charlie Korsmo) who turns into the life of the party and a pair of old friends (Seth Green, Lauren Ambrose) who confront each other about their mutual needs and insecurities. There are some really good scenes between these two and this modest movie has a few other pleasant surprises up its sleeve. That doesn't make it particularly good but it does make it an agreeable waste of time. --Jeff Shannon

  From 'Doctor Who' producer Barry Letts and writer Terrance Dicks comes Moonbase 3 originally aired in 1973. The series had two directors Ken Hannam who also directed the 1981 TV version of The Day of the Triffids and Christopher Barry who had directing duties on Doctor Who and The Tripods. Among the stars were British acting stalwart Donald Houston and Ralph Bates star of many Hammer horror films. Moonbase 3 was another groundbreaking piece of science-fiction from the BBC employing James Burke as scientific advisor it was unique in its technical authenticity. Deaprture And Arrival: Dr. Helen Smith becomes concerned over the mental state of one of the pilots Harry Sanders. She expresses her concerns to the base's second in command Michael Lebrun and tries to convince him to get Commander Ransom to remove the pilot from duty. Ransom refuses and assigns Sanders to pilot the Commander's shuttle for a trip to Earth. After an malfunction Sanders cuts the communications link and goes outside the shuttle to make repairs and is thrown into space. When Ransom attempts to pilot the shuttle it explodes. The European agency sends a Welch scientist to take over the station and to investigate the shuttle accident. Behemoth: After a number of mysterious deaths paranoia sets in as the crew begins to believe the deaths are being committed by a 'Moon Monster' living on the surface of the Moon. Achilles Heel: The station's crew suffers from an unusual number of accidents and mistakes. Director Caulder must deal with the problems while trying to operate within his Earth-bound superiors' budgetary limitations. Outsiders: An auditor is sent to Moonbase 3 from the European Headquarters in Brussels to investigate whether or not the cost of operating the base is justified. Director Caulder demands results for the base scientists as Dr. Helen Smith becomes concerned over the stress on the staff especially Steven Partness... Castor And Pollux: An accident leaves Tom Hill stranded in a shuttle between Earth and the Moon. The only person who can save him is Colonel Gararov a Russian cosmonaut. However to rescue Hill Gararov would have to disobey the orders of his superior General Trenkin Commander of the Russian moon base. Viw Of A Dead Planet: The Artic Sun Project proposes to use a nuclear explosion over the Artic thereby melting the ice and creating a Garden of Eden. The project's designer Sir Benjamin Dyce comes to Moonbase 3 in an attempt to stop the program for fear that the explosion can not be contained and it will lead to the extinction of mankind...

  This is the film based on the 1970s TV sitcom Man About the House, made during the same period with the same cast. At the time, the whole idea of a single man and two single women sharing a flat, however (more-or-less) platonically, seemed terribly naughty. The scriptwriters wickedly stirred things up even further by making Richard O'Sullivan's character a randy-but-gentlemanly heterosexual, despite being a catering student--after all, in the 70s everyone just knew that all chefs were roaring poofs. The trio's sex-starved landlady (Yootha Joyce) and her rodent-like, impotent husband (Brian Murphy) were later to get their own series, George and Mildred. The plot is a perfunctory affair, as property developers attempt and fail to demolish the street in which the protagonists live. That said, the script (cowritten by John Mortimer) isn't really narrative-driven anyway, it's purely an excuse for the characters to interact with the will-they-won't-they-ooh-they-are-a-bit relationship between Robin and Chrissie (Paula Wilcox) and practically invites the viewer to cheer them on. While the transition to the big screen caused the idea to lose much of its energy, as a dollop of comedy nostalgia Man About the House is still great fun. And if you don't laugh at the jokes, just check out the clothes, cars, hairstyles and makeup, not to mention all that cigarette smoking! --Roger Thomas

  Based on the life of Gertrude Lintz, a Long Island socialite who kept an amazing menagerie of animals on her estate, this very able film by Caroline Thompson (Black Beauty) concentrates on Lintz's relationship with a gorilla named Buddy, whom she raised from infancy on. The film is geared toward kids but in the very best sense as Thompson orchestrates some very entertaining sequences without cutting corners on logic, the way most forms of children's entertainment do today. Rene Russo is very good as the eccentric woman, and Robbie Coltrane is uncharacteristically warm and fuzzy as her patient husband. Nice support work from Alan Cumming and the rest of the cast. Thompson is aiming for something akin to the live-action glory days of Disney, and she comes close to achieving it. --Tom Keogh
