  • Innocent VoicesInnocent Voices | DVD | (06/11/2006) from £12.01   |  Saving you £7.98 (66.44%)   |  RRP £19.99

More than 300 000 children presently serve in armies in over 40 countries. Based on the true story of screenwriter Oscar Torres's embattled childhood Luis Mandoki's Innocent Voices is the poignant tale of Chava (Carlos Padilla) an eleven-year-old boy who suddenly becomes the ""man of the house"" after his father abandons the family in the middle of a civil war. In El Salvador in the 1980s the government's armed forces are already recruiting twelve year olds rousting them out of their classes at the local middle school. If he is lucky Chava has just one year of innocence left one year before he too will be conscripted to fight the government's battle against the peasant rebels of the FMLN. Chava's life becomes a game of survival not only from the bullets of the escalating war but also from the dispiriting effects of daily violence. As he hustles to find work to help his single mother pay the bills and experiences the pangs of first love for a beautiful classmate Chava's tiny home village becomes both playground and battlefield. Armed only with the love of his mother (Leonor Varela) and a small radio that broadcasts a forbidden anthem of love and peace and faced with the impossible choice of joining either the army or the rebels Chava finds the courage to keep his heart open and his spirit alive in his race against time.

  • Absence Of Malice [1981]Absence Of Malice | DVD | (16/07/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

In 1981, Absence of Malice was a prescient drama set in the world of journalism just before its power exploded out of control. The title refers to a verbal loophole effectively allowing invasion of privacy. After months of fruitlessly investigating the disappearance of a prominent figure, the Justice Division contrive to leak a story that'll flush out information. Unfortunately they pick on the one news gal with a moral backbone lurking behind the all-business façade. Sally Field is superb at controlling the contradictions within Megan, and is perfect next to the resolutely calm Gallagher (an Oscar-nominated Paul Newman). His bogus investigation is sure to backfire, and once the two get together it does so in the most satisfying of ways. Shot in gloriously sunny Miami locations, the film has a constant atmosphere of realism. When it's time to point the finger of blame, the film is given over to the starriest of cameos from Wilfred Brimley as the straight-talking Assistant Attorney General. His differentiation between truth and accuracy ought to be required learning for all journalists. On the DVD: The sound may be mono, but the picture is crisp enough. A minute-long deleted scene expanding Gallagher's business crisis is in poor condition however and doesn't add much. Neither does the theatrical trailer or three mini Filmographies of director Sidney Pollack, Newman and Field. The real extra treat is a 30-minute documentary, which features new interviews with Pollack, writer Kurt Luedtke, Newman and Field. Everyone has fond memories of making the film, even Field despite her bruises after the rough-and-tumble scene with the usually genteel Newman. --Paul Tonks

Bette Midler plays a Janis Joplin-like singer overwhelmed by stardom and its excesses. Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) directs what is a kind of hybrid showcase for Midler's concert talents and a standard pop biopic, with the usual rhythms of desire, success, betrayal, failure, and such. Alan Bates is the best thing about the movie as the Rose's ruthless manager, and Harry Dean Stanton and Frederic Forrest add some interesting seasoning. But as a whole, the film can't rise above its mixed purposes or clichés. --Tom Keogh

  • Night And The City [1992]Night And The City | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Producer-turned-director Irwin Winkler crafted this 1992 remake of Jules Dassin's 1950 film noir Night and the City, the tale of a small-time hustler in London who gets in over his head. Winkler's version is set in New York and stars Robert De Niro as a shyster lawyer who decides to get even with a boxing promoter (Alan King) who bests him in court. A couple of innocents are talked into helping the cause, notably the brother (Jack Warden) of De Niro's enemy and a barmaid (Jessica Lange) who agrees to finance the operation. Everything goes south, plunging the hero into prospects of real disaster. The film is far from an exemplary, contemporary noir, but its outstanding cast, with no shortage of charisma and dynamics, keeps things terribly interesting. So does the funny but terse script by Richard Price (Clockers), who also has a cameo as a doctor. Winkler's sensibilities as a tasteful and intelligent producer still get in the way of his daring as a director, but he does leave us with much to be satisfied about.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
