Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express | DVD | (16/06/2003)
from £13.13
| Saving you £3.85 (37.97%)
| RRP The first of several lavish Christie adaptations from producers John Brabourne and Richard Goodwin introducing Albert Finney as the first screen Hercule Poirot. This 1974 production of Agatha Christie's 1934 classic is a judicious mixture of mystery murder and nostalgia. Which member of the all-star cast onboard the luxurious train perforated the no-good American tycoon with a dagger twelve times? Was it Ingrid Bergman's shy Swedish missionary; or Vanessa Redgrave's English rose; Sean Connery as an Indian Army Colonel: Michael York or Jacqueline Bisset; perhaps Lauren Bacall; Anthony Perkins or John Gielgud as the victim's impassive butler. Finney spreads unease among them with subdued wit and finesse. Arguably the most successful screen adaptation of a Christie novel in addition to Bergman's Oscar for Best Supporting Actress 'Murder On The Orient Express' achieved nominations for Best Actor Screenplay Photography Costume Design and Music Score.

Nighthawks/Strip Jack Naked - Nighthawks 2 | DVD | (30/03/2009)
from £22.96

| RRP Nighthawks: After the end of his workday staid schoolteacher Jim explores the disco's and secret meeting places of London's gay underground unable to reconcile his sexual identity with the rest of his life - until the strain of living a lie threatens to take its toll at last. Nighthawks 2: British director Ron Peck's look back at at the production of his groundbreaking Nighthawks which candidly explored a closeted gay schoolteacher's inner conflicts. The director tells very poignantly his own story of self-discovery and coming out. Most striking is the story of how much effort and determination it took to get Nighthawks made and why there are hundreds of names in the closing credits that the producers would like to give thanks to - they are people who sent in small amounts of money after reading in a London gay paper that the filmmakers needed funds to continue the project.

Mean Girls / Clueless | DVD | (18/10/2004)
from £16.49
| Saving you £8.50 (51.55%)
| RRP The cutting wit of Tina Fey (the first female head writer for US comedy breeding ground Saturday Night Live) brilliantly fuses pop culture and smart satire. Fey wrote Mean Girls, in which a formerly home-schooled girl named Cady (Lindsay Lohan) gets dropped into the sneaky, vicious world of the Plastics, three adolescent glamour-girls who dominate their public high school's social heirarchy. Cady first befriends a couple of art-punk outsiders who persuade her to infiltrate the Plastics and destroy them from within--but power corrupts, and Cady soon finds the glory of being a Plastic to be seductive. Mean Girls joins the ranks of Clueless, Bring It On, and Heathers, cunning movies that use the hormone-pressurized high school milieu to put the dark impulses of human nature--ambition, envy, lust, revenge--under a comic microscope. Fey manages to skewer everyone without forgetting the characters' hapless humanity; it's a dazzling and delightful balancing act. --Bret Fetzer
