Karan Kapoor (Saif Ali Khan) who works as a cartoonist with one of India's leading newspapers. Karan runs a cartoon strip in the paper under the name of Hum Tum. He sees the world is divided by Boy and Girl not by country not by religion. It's the only divison Karan sees in this world. Karan met Rhea (Rani Mukerjee) for the first time in Amsterdam. There they disagreed on everything. So to put things right Karan innocently kissed her to confirm their friendship. But things went worse and the meeting ended on a bad note. Six months later they again meet in New York the Amsterdam kiss is still fresh in Rhea's mind and she spills the beans to Karan's steady girlfriend. From then he meets Rhea on a regular basis at various stages in their lives. But every meeting has ended on a bad note. During this period Rhea has gone through some personal tragedies and also passed several ups and downs but Karan has always been there for her. During this time she has moved all over the place from Mumbai to Paris to New York and back to Mumbai. Karan even tried fixing her up with a friend of his - with her mothers permission of course - but as with everything else this didn't quite work out either. As luck would have it Karan's career as a cartoonist was soaring and so one thing led to another and Rhea took off once again on a bad terms. But despite their mishaps destiny has bigger plans for Karan and Rhea......
Kind-hearted and compassionate Mr. Sinha (nasir hussain) runs a textile mill in a city in India, and shares his profits by paying generous wages and bonuses to his grateful workers. But when he unexpectedly passes away, his son, Hiralal (Suresh Oberoi), takes over and changes everything in order to maximize profits. This brings him into conflict with his employees, including a long-time employee named Dinanath Saxena(Dilip kumar). When Dinanath openly confronts Hiralal in a public meeting, Hiralal wants him to tender a written apology, but Dinanath instead resigns and decides to open his very own mill with the help of a struggling Engineer, Ashok Mathur(Raj babbar). After some struggles, they do open a mill, and get help from some employees of Hiralal's mill. Soon they earn a good reputation, get more orders than they bargained for, and the money starts pouring in. Dinanath finds out that his daughter, Meena (padmini kolhapure), has fallen in love with Ashok, and is delighted. He asks Ashok for his consent, and thereafter the marriage takes place. What Dinanath does not know that Ashok is in love with Smita Batra (Rati agnihotri), the only daughter of multi-millionaire and Dinanath's benefactor, Kundanlal (iftikhar), but is afraid to tell this. An angry Smita is all set to avenge herself, and she does so by marrying Meena's brother, Ramesh (raj kiran), with a view of creating discord in Ashok's marital life, and bringing him to ruin. Things go according to Smita's plan and soon Ashok is cast out of the Saxena family; Meena distrusts him; Ramesh would like to see him behind bars, and the only one who wants to help Ashok is Hiralal - but he does have a secret agenda surrounded by lies, deception, and treachery
