  • Ravi Shankar In Portrait [2002]Ravi Shankar In Portrait | DVD | (24/09/2002) from £29.52   |  Saving you £-4.53 (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

It is almost impossible to condense anyone's life into three hours, let alone that of an iconic artist, so three cheers to BBC Opus Arte for Ravi Shankar in Portrait, a two-DVD set that explores the life and work of the man George Harrison described as "the godfather of world music". "Between Two Worlds" is a substantial 10-part documentary, telling the sitar player's life story up to his 80th birthday celebrations in 2000. The film is littered with archive footage, including the young Shankar performing with his brother's dance troupe, an emotional reunion with his teacher and guru Baba Allauddin Khan, and his celebrated collaborations with musicians such as John Coltrane, Yehudi Menuhin and The Beatles. The second part features Shankar performing with a group of Indian musicians, including his daughter Anoushka, herself a celebrated sitar player, at the Union Chapel in London during summer 2002. The electric atmosphere is well captured here, as is the intimacy of the performance. A 19-minute introduction to Indian music and the sitar, delivered by Shankar himself, rounds off the set. On the DVD: Ravi Shankar in Portrait features both stereo and surround sound options for the concert performance. Subtitles are provided in German, Spanish and French. The accompanying booklet provides a useful introduction to Shankar as well as biographies of his fellow performers. --Rebecca Agnew

  • Wild West [1992]Wild West | DVD | (16/06/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The story of a struggling rock band, 1992's Wild West suffered comparisons with The Commitments, which was released the year before. There similarities end, however, since the Honky Tonk Cowboys are made up of four Pakistani brothers from the West London suburb of Southall. There's tumbleweed in the street, saloon doors at home and barroom brawls at the Asian Rising Stars Talent Contest. Eldest brother Zaf (Naveen Andrews) looks the part in a ten-gallon hat and fringe jacket, but the mongrel neighbourhood is a long way from the Nashville the brother's dream about. Dogged by gangland thugs and the well-meant pursuit of traditional values from their poor mother (Lalita Ahmed), they stumble from one danger to another. The worst comes in the form of the beautiful Rifat (Sarita Choudhury), who steals Zaf's heart and the band's hopes of stardom with "Wild West Records". The film was written by then 29-year-old Harwant Bains, who grew up in Southall in a family of Punjabi background. It's clearly a flight of personal fancy rooted in an environment harshly observed. If the petty crime sits uncomfortably with the love story there's always the considerately compiled soundtrack to smooth away the suburb's rough edges. --Paul Tonks

  • Zubeidaa [2001]Zubeidaa | DVD | (07/05/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £10.99

Palaces, princesses and politics--on the face of it Indian art cinema doyen Shyam Benegal's maiden foray into Bollywood, Zubeidaa, appears to have all the ingredients of a mainstream success. However, the film is at best an uneasy blend of art-house sensibilities with the full-on spectacle that is commercial Hindi cinema. This is the latest in a series of semi-autobiographical stories by writer Khalid Mohamed that have been directed by Benegal. Here the director charts the story of Zubeidaa, a young aristocratic Muslim woman, whose promising film career is cut short. She is married off young, has a son, is divorced and finally finds love with the married ruler of a princely state in newly independent India. Told in flashback, the film's structure and some key scenes are very similar to the director's masterpiece Bhumika ("The Role", 1976). Karisma Kapoor, hitherto known for her scantily clad raunchy roles, makes her bid for artistic credentials as the eponymous heroine. But much like the film itself, her performance falls between two stools. Veteran actress Rekha who plays her paramour's first wife easily outclasses her in a graceful yet forceful performance. AR Rahman's music is haunting, dreamy and helps create a mood and ambience that the visuals fail to produce. On the DVD: Zubeidaa is presented in a pleasing anamorphic transfer with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. While the menus are easy enough to navigate, the extras are disappointing, consisting of a faded theatrical trailer and a few television promos complete with dropouts. The subtitling, though largely accurate, makes quite a few errors. For example "cemetery" appears as "symmetry" while the word "diary" consistently appears as "dairy". --Naman Ramachandran
