The 1988 Carlton mini-movie The One Game is the perfect definition of cult TV. Originally shown as four Saturday night instalments, it was a success with audiences and critics alike at the time and remains an extremely original piece of television. On the surface, the story is as simple: an ex-business partner exacts a very personal revenge. The game being played by Magnus (an almost unrecognisable Patrick Malahide) upon the arrogant Nick (Stephen Dillon) makes the tale far more interesting, however. If the premise sounds a little familiar, that's because the 1997 Michael Douglas movie The Game has striking similarities. The show captured society's interest in games at exactly the right time. First there's the Arthurian context, which visually struck a chord with a decade of Dungeons and Dragons fans. Then there's the constant reference to the new dawn of computer games, which everyone was excited about going into the 90s. But Nick is embroiled in a theory of Reality Gaming that turns everything on its head. He doesn't know who of his friends or colleagues may be in on the game, and since it begins with the sting of a £2 million theft, he's prepared to make sacrifices along the way. Changes in fashion and technology can't detract from what remains a cracking good yarn, well told and well played. On the DVD: The One Game arrives on disc superbly packaged. The attractive box contains an informative booklet relating the show's place in TV history. Unfortunately there's nothing at all in the way of extras on the disc itself--a disappointment, which, like the 4:3 ratio and stereo sound, is only to be expected for an all-but forgotten gem. --Paul Tonks

Northfork: Northfork is a mythical tale of loss and resurrection continuing The Polish Brothers' cinematic obsession with the American heartland and the country's shifting dreams and visions. It is 1955 and the barren town of Northfork is quite literally about to be 'dammed'. Plans for a new hydro-electric plant in the area mean that the plains on which the town stands are soon to be flooded. With most of the townsfolk already evacuated several stoic citizens remain among them a lustful young couple a modern-day Noah who has built an ark for his two wives and a frail orphan boy who dreams he is the lost member of a host of wandering angels. Charged with removing the last of the residents is an Evacuation Committee comprising of six trench-coated agents some of whom will discover their own lives profoundly changed before the deluge is over. (Dir. Michael Polish 2003) Twin Falls Idaho: A different kind of love story. The minute he wakes up and the minute before sleep - for two minutes each day Blake Falls feels alone. He tries to grab those minutes before they vanish. They are enough to remind him who he is. Francis Falls understands that if it weren't for Blake he wouldn't be able to make it. His conjoined twin's heart is very strong. Blake he knows could live without him. The brothers live quietly in an eccentric hotel peopled with odd characters talking in a shorthand formed over 25 years. They dress impeccably in a custom-tailored suit adjusting each other's ties; they dine on cotton candy and on their birthday their only meal is their trademark chocolate cake; they blow out two candles one at a time. They can keep straight faces while telling outrageous tales from their earlier days in show business. When Francis becomes ill Blake holds him through the night the way he always has. Together they feel complete. When Penny (Michele Hicks) a beautiful young woman enters their lives for the first time someone sees the brothers' world from the inside. She makes them think of possibilities when they're certain there aren't any. They start to wonder how it would be to feel complete in new ways. ""Maybe I'll call you when I'm single "" Blake quips. They imagine living not as medical anomalies but as individuals who can breathe walk and dream on their own. (Dir. Michael Polish 1999)

  • Casino Lights '99 [1999]Casino Lights '99 | DVD | (09/07/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

Contemporary jazz, smooth jazz, jazz lite: call it what you will, Casino Lights 99 will fulfil any taste you may have for that kind of funky, groove-oriented instrumental music (with a couple of vocals thrown in for good measure). Filmed at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival in 1999, the concert (also available on CD) features some of the genre's best players, like pianist Bob James and guitarist Larry Carlton, both of whom appear with their own bands, backing other musicians, and with their group Fourplay. Also on hand are keyboardist George Duke, saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Boney James, Kirk Whalum, and Mark Turner, and trumpeter Rick Braun. The performances are all good; these fellows can play, and singers Kevin Mahogany and Gabriela Anders are no slouches either. The problem lies in the material. Aside from Miles Davis's "Four" (played by Fourplay), the standard "Old Folks" (Turner), and a couple of others, most of what passes for tunes is little more than riff-heavy, melody-free jamming--and that includes two hoary classics, Eddie Harris's "Cold Duck Time" (played here by Carlton) and Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" (the closing number, played by just about everybody). The simple truth is that listening to (and watching) some guy get down with his funky horn again and again gets old over the course of two hours. But then, perhaps you had to be there. --Sam Graham, Amazon.com

Originally produced for cable and home video as a documentary project, the Classic Albums series offers in-depth profiles of enduring rock and pop albums built around first-person interviews with the artists, producers and musicians that created them. That audio focus creates an ironic, largely perceptual problem for DVD release, since the segments aren't intended to replace the original audio recordings, only to expand upon them: these are conventional DVDs, not harbingers of true audio DVD optimised for sonic resolution, and they are not mixed to exploit surround playback. If you haven't heard these albums, nearly all of them landmarks in late 20th century pop, then this isn't the place to start, and Aja magnifies that issue through the very high standard of the original audio recording, itself a true audiophile work. If you do know the album, however, the Classic Album presentation is a handsomely produced, revealing companion. --Sam Sutherland
