Ricky Martin's bravura, swivel-hipped performance of "The Cup of Life" at the 41st annual Grammy Awards handily stole the spotlight from the evening's platinum-edged superstars, and positioned him as poster boy for a Latin-pop crossover boom that dominated media for months to follow. Like most "overnight" sensations (or, for that matter, "brand new" pop trends), Martin's impact was actually the payoff for an extended apprenticeship: anything but a novice, this Puerto Rican native was already a major star in the Spanish-speaking pop realm, having graduated from his early stint as a plump-cheeked member of Menudo to become a sleek heartthrob. With his chiselled features, flashing smile and sinuous physical presence, Martin can't be blamed for playing to his female fans, and these video clips do just that. The sequence for Martin's breakout English hit, "Livin' La Vida Loca" (also included in a Spanish version) offers a template of sorts: footage of Martin performing the song in a night-club setting is interspersed with location shots of the singer and the siren he's singing about, stitched together with rapid cuts and swirling camera movement that echo the percolating rhythms. Elsewhere, on "She's All I Ever Had", Martin downshifts to the role of earnest balladeer. The objects of his affection are typically drop-dead gorgeous (and, in one instance, teasingly undraped), and the undercurrent of sex approximates the sort of glossy perfection you would expect from lingerie or perfume ads.The cover-boy route is probably inevitable for Martin, but his vitality is hard to dismiss, especially during the final song--the same live Grammy performance that put him on global pop radar. That joyous appearance confirms that Martin doesn't need supermodel co-stars or retakes to heat things up. --Sam Sutherland

  • Ricky Martin - One Night Only [1999]Ricky Martin - One Night Only | DVD | (28/02/2000) from £9.72   |  Saving you £-1.73 (N/A%)   |  RRP £7.99

Fans of Latino gusset-dampener Ricky Martin will need no encouragement to buy One Night Only other than knowing it exists, so it’s commendable to see that what they will get is a pretty good package after all. On the down side, without the kind of slick studio production accorded to his albums it’s clear that Martin’s voice is, well, rather ordinary. But on the up side, he’s beautiful, he’s great fun, he’s not short on stage presence and his enthusiasm for the Latin music of his native Puerto Rico is entirely genuine (one of the brief reportage snippets scattered throughout this release shows him playing with a samba band--and getting it right, too). There’s a spooky moment in the opening number of this huge gig (which took place in Liberty State Park in New York) as the backdrop artfully falls to reveal the twin towers of the World Trade Center framing Martin like Samson’s pillars. Once this frisson passes it’s good times all the way, with the inevitable "Vida Loca" and "La Copa De La Vida" as highlights. There are guest spots from Carlos Santana and Jose Feliciano. On the DVD: One Night Only comes with a 4:3 ratio picture and includes an excellent video of the already excellent "Shake Your Bon-Bon", plus a gallery of still photos. --Roger Thomas

  • Ricky Martin - European Tour [2001]Ricky Martin - European Tour | DVD | (04/10/2004) from £8.99   |  Saving you £1.00 (10.00%)   |  RRP £9.99

Ricky Martin may be the undisputed king of Latino pop but this European Tour DVD collection presents the star in a wholly uninspiring way. It's the televisual equivalent of a 100 per cent unofficial Ricky Martin annual, packed full of ancient library photos and sneaked pictures of the star. Ricky's live concert performances of his Spanish-language greatest hits are fine but are terminally scarred by the poor picture and sound quality. Throughout the presentation a distracting "RM" logo is displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. The interview and behind-the-scenes footage is farcical, and any interesting information about Ricky uncovered in the interview is ruined by the pathetic visual effects. Equally as awful are the voice-overs, which resemble the style and tone of those used on Channel 4's Eurotrash, but with any irony squeezed out. The translations (from Spanish to English) are decidedly dodgy, with one Spanish female fan saying she likes Ricky because "he has great buns". The majority of the visual material is stretched out of proportion, continually repeated in slow motion and appears to have been shot on an ordinary video camera. Even die-hard fans of Martin are strongly recommended to steer well clear of this release, especially with other DVDs such as the Official Video Collection and One Night Only providing far better value for money. On the DVD: As well as the overall poor quality of the feature, there are no decent extras. The bonus video clip of "La Bamba", is a camcorder recording of Martin performing a song on stage with a live recording of the track dubbed over the top. Due to the use of a tiny font, and a flickering typeface the biography and discography are impossible to read. Capitalisation and punctuation also seem to be randomly applied in the biography. Furthermore the feature and bonus material is only presented in standard picture format and in stereo.--John Galilee

The Essential Ricky Martin Collection is a repackaged version of the poor-quality Ricky Martin--European Tour, released in 2001. Using concert footage shot on a camcorder, and cheesy special effects, the European Tour release has gone down in history as one the most dreadful pop DVDs ever released. In an attempt to add more value and revitalise the main feature, a biographical audio CD and 24-page booklet have also been included here. In comparison to the material featured on the DVD, the audio CD is bearable but contains only snippets of music. Instead, excerpts from unlicensed interviews with the star are interspersed with voiceovers from an over-enthusiastic presenter, who constantly describes the singer as "phenomenal". The "24-page colour super booklet" is virtually a printed transcript of the material contained on the discs. Like the rest of the package the booklet’s style is weak, and contains dated library images of the star. In a desperate attempt to appeal to an English-language audience, the track-listing is in English (with Spanish translations following in brackets) even though the songs are all performed in Spanish. The Official Video Collection and One Night Only are still by far the best Ricky Martin DVD collections available. On the DVD: The Essential Ricky Martin Collection on disc is the same as the European Tour release, with the addition of CD, booklet and poster. The bonus clip of "La Bamba" is an amateur recording of Ricky performing a song on stage with a live recording of the track dubbed over the top. Due to the use of a tiny font, and a flickering typeface the biography and discography are impossible to read. The feature and bonus material are only presented in standard picture format and in stereo.--John Galilee
