Ever wondered what happened to the "fourth Beatle"? Ringo Starr has spent much of the time since 1989 on the road with his All-Starr Band, a flexible line-up of musicians from the 1960s and 70s--somewhere between a backing band and a rock and roll circus. The Best of Ringo Starr covers five stages of the band's concerts, featuring Starr--in close-cropped and pony-tailed guises--singing and/or drumming his way through a fair selection from The Beatles' back catalogue, alternating with "star turns" from the other band members. There's Dr John in full-on Mardi Gras attire; Nils Lofgren's precision power-playing; Todd Rundgren in send-up mode; Jack Bruce and Peter Frampton striking sparks in "Sunshine of Your Love"; Gary Booker turning an ever "Whiter Shade of Pale" and, as a grand finale, Ringo leading from the front in a stadium sing-along of "With a Little Help from My Friends". The vocals haven't improved from his handful of Beatles leads, but there's no denying his commitment and enthusiasm in pursuit of a good time. There's some amusing backstage footage of well-seasoned pros genuinely having fun. But then, Ringo was always the entertainer. What would you think if he sang out of tune? It scarcely matters... --Richard Whitehouse

It started with an irresistible offer. Ringo Starr formed the All-Starr Band in 1989 simply by calling some of his rock n' roll chums asking them if they wanted to have a little fun that summer. The result? A rare gathering of music legends together on a single stage playing some of the world's classic songs. The experiment proved so successful that Ringo continued the tradition changing the band's line-up each tour to keep it fresh and exciting. With highlights from four All-Star B

This 1968 oddity is probably a film only a total Beatlemaniac could love, but it carries both musical and historical resonance. It also gives intimations of what would happen in the next 30 years as artists gained more and more power over how they were presented. The roots of virtually any rock star's vanity project (including Prince's Under the Cherry Moon) can be traced to this little Liverpudlian home movie. Fresh from the success of their films A Hard Day's Night and Help!, and still under the influence of the intoxicants of the era, the Beatles set out to make their own fancifully psychedelic project. What they got out of it was, essentially, a knock-off album with a few good songs and a lot of filler, which is more than can be said for this alternately self-indulgent and mildly amusing British version of Ken Kesey's magic bus tour. Using some of their favourite actors (including Victor Spinetti, who was in their first two movies), the Beatles make an alternative British travelogue, stopping occasionally to sing songs like "I Am the Walrus" and "The Fool on the Hill." Strictly for completists. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com
