Back from the city Ray is the new manager of his band's struggling ski resort. Convinced that the hotel's beautiful guest is an incognito critic for the exclusive Worthington Travel Guide he sets out to garner a good review. But the guest - actually a Mohawk Indian - has her own agenda: she's come to the reserve hoping to find the man with whom she's been exchanging romantic emails. When she mistakenly confuses the over-solicitous Ray for her amorous pen pal the comedy of errors kicks into high gear. Especially when the real critic arrives and encounters the hotel's vegetarian chef who whips up fabulous meals for his guests then kills their appetites by telling them the pet names and life stories of the animals they are eating. Add to the mix chambermaids who insist on bringing their children to work a resident handyman who constantly hits on the ski bunnies and Ray's father the retired Chief who just wants to win the new Jeep Cherokee at the big holiday bingo.

  • Nude For Satan [1974]Nude For Satan | DVD | (26/07/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

In Nude for Satan, director Luigi Batzella deftly combines weirdly stylised horror and out-and-out exploitation (scenes of bondage, torture, unmotivated sex and an orgy are sprinkled throughout) for a film dripping in eerie mood and nightmare imagery. Two strangers who wreck their cars on a rural highway during a storm take refuge in a mansion. A doctor (James Harris), who has left an unconscious woman, Susan (the striking Rita Calderoni), in his car walks in to discover depravities behind every door when Susan suddenly appears, dressed in a flowing gown and acting as if they were old friends. The next morning, Susan wakes up in his car and enters the mansion to find a leering aristocrat, his snaggle-toothed servant, and the doctor dressed as a count and acting like a decadent dilettante. It's as if the two exist in parallel universes, confronted with ghost versions of one another in a portal to the past controlled by a devilish hedonist. The doppelganger story of split psyches doesn't always make sense, and a few clumsily executed scenes are laughably silly (a hoary papier mâché and pipe-cleaner spider is the worst offender), but the handsome production is unexpectedly compelling and unsettling. --Sean Axmaker

  • Idiot Box [1996]Idiot Box | DVD | (11/02/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Kev watches too much television, the Idiot Boxof the title. An unemployed hooligan, he wants there to be something in his life apart from vandalism, drink and perfunctory sex. He rages against dogs and people who are as rude to him as he is to everybody--anger is who he is. His best friend Mick is even more bad natured, and between them they concoct a doomed bank-robbery. Kev beats up the police informer who sells him the guns; the police are watching the bank, waiting for it to be attacked by an entirely different bank robber; and their stolen getaway car is reclaimed by its owner. Often very funny, Idiot Box is a terrifying film about the stuntedness of young male Australian working class lives. Ben Mendelsohn and Jeremy Sims bring pathos and wit to their portrayals of Kev and Mick, while also making it clear that these are not young men you would wish to meet or fall out with. David Caesar's deliberately jagged directorial style echoes the adrenalin-driven lives of his protagonists and keeps us constantly on edge as he cuts between story lines. --Roz Kaveney

  • Rat [2000]Rat | DVD | (20/08/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

The premise of Rat is simple enough: when hard-drinking Hubert Flynn comes home late and bedraggled for the umpteenth time, he wakes up transformed into the rat he truly is. Flynn's family is upset and surprised, but somehow they recognise the appropriateness of this turn of events--Flynn's wife Conchita (Imelda Staunton) even takes a smug satisfaction in her husband's fate. When a writer arrives and offers to help Conchita write a bestselling book about this odd turn of events, she seizes on the opportunity to squeeze something positive from the man who's made her so miserable--and in the process, becomes a bit of a rat herself. Rat takes a little while to establish its comic tone, but once it settles into a kind of Irish magic realism, the deadpan reactions of the family becomes strikingly funny. For example, when Conchita takes the rat to visit Flynn's favourite tavern, one barfly blithely comments, "Still, all things considered, he's not looking so bad". Pete Postlethwaite plays Flynn in his brief time as a non-rat, and all the performances are excellent; particularly charming is Kerry Condon as Flynn's daughter, who desperately tries to preserve some sense of dignity for her altered dad. With its whimsical humour and sardonic streak, Rat is no doubt destined to become a cult favourite. Fans of Monty Python will appreciate the film's sly verbal wit. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
