Think you can trust the media? There were two wars in Iraq - a military assault and a media war. The former was well-covered; the latter was not. Until now... Independent filmmaker Emmy-award winning TV journalist author and media critic Danny Schechter turns the cameras on the role of the media. His new film WMD is an outspoken assessment of how Pentagon propaganda and media complicity misled the American people while selling the war to influence international public opinion. Schechter compares and contrasts coverage on a global basis including exclusive material and insider interviews. WMD is a serious film that exposes the media role - the biggest scandal of our time

In Bud the C.H.U.D. a couple of high-school kids loose the cadaver for the next day's science experiment, then hit on a plan to steal a body from the local hospital to replace it. Unfortunately what they don’t know is that the hospital is home to a rather more sinister and dubious military trial, the sole remaining C.H.U.D (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller), who has been cryogenically frozen after the experiment went horribly wrong. Unwittingly they thaw Bud the C.H.U.D, who has the rebel-boy charm of James Dean and the personal tastes of Hannibal Lector. Bud then lumbers off on a cannibalistic rampage infecting everyone he munches on (including the family dog) and turning the town into a whole army of C.H.U.Ds. Only the Colonel (played with great melodramatic gusto by Robert "Napoleon Solo" Vaughn) and the kids who unleashed him can save the town from a fate worse than death. This tongue-in-check schlock horror movie is worth watching just for the late-80s nostalgia, the performances are clichéd and the plot wafer thin, but the humour hits the spot and Brian Robbins as the eponymous Bud positively eats his way into your heart. On the DVD: the DVD is unfortunately devoid of any special features other than a filmography and the film stock has a kind of graininess that comes from being low budget (rather than purposefully art house). It won’t be to everyone’s taste but you can’t beat the pure entertainment factor of a cannibalistic poodle. --Kristen Bowditch

This is a visual jukebox of some of the biggest Country stars of the 1960's including four true giants of the genre Marty Robbins Merle Haggard Buck Owens and Don Gibson. The usual insane plot shouldn't detract from the fact that there is a lot of good country music included in the film. Leo G. Carroll of 'The Man from Uncle' fame is partnered with Marilyn Maxwell whose car breaks down and Marty Robbins tour bus stops by to help and he also gives them two tickets for the Grand Ole Opry on which he is the star performer. The main source of irritation in the film comes from Gonzalez-Gonzalez a would be Mexican funny man who unfortunately isn't funny. Amongst the song Robbins sings are 'Singing the Blues' 'Tonight Carmen' 'Green Green Grass of Home' and 'El Paso.

  • My Dear SecretaryMy Dear Secretary | DVD | (01/09/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £3.99

If Charles Martin's wisecracking 1948 period-piece My Dear Secretary hasn't quite endured as a classic of its kind, it still commands attention as an appealing and often very funny curiosity. Kirk Douglas rightly earned his status as one of the titans of big-screen epic drama, so it's a surprise to encounter him in this romantic comedy as a feckless writer who can always find something to do rather than get down to work, leaving a string of outraged, frustrated or compromised secretaries in his wake. Douglas has a reasonably light comic touch and spars well with Laraine Day, in determined form as the secretary whom finally tames him and, in a notable strike for women's liberation, becomes a successful author herself in the process. But this is a film in which the supporting cast steal the best lines and scenes. Keenan Wynn is delightful as Ronnie, Douglas' neighbour and partner in the pursuit of pleasure. Some splendid high campery offers ample evidence that in a more enlightened age, Ronnie would surely have been openly gay. How else to explain his hilarious last reel marriage of convenience to the wealthy dragon of a landlady, played by the irrepressible Florence Bates? It isn't vintage screwball by any means, but My Dear Secretary is witty and literate enough to make you long for a revival in sophisticated cinema comedy. Truly, they don't make 'em like they used to. On the DVD: As the rush to release long-forgotten gems on DVD turns into a deluge, we will probably have to get used to the sort of disappointment on offer here: unrestored prints with no digital remastering and lousy sound quality, simply slammed onto the disc. The film could hardly be served less adequately. There isn't even any static background information on the production or the actors, making the package rather poor. --Piers Ford

Liam Lynch) (2006): In Venice Beach naive Midwesterner JB (Black) bonds with local slacker KG (Gass) and they form the rock band Tenacious D. Fracture (Dir. Gregory Holbit) (2007): When Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) discovers that his beautiful younger wife Jennifer (Embeth Davidtz) is having an affair he plans her murder...the perfect murder. Among the police arriving at the crime scene is hostage negotiator Detective Rob Nunally (Billy Burke) the only officer permitted entry to the house. Surprisingly Crawford readily admits to shooting his wife but Nunally is too stunned to pay close attention when he recognizes his lover whose true identity he never knew lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Although Jennifer was shot at point blank range Nunally realizes she isn't dead. Crawford is immediately arrested and arraigned after confessing - a seemingly slam-dunk case for hot shot assistant district attorney Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling) who has one foot out the door of the District Attorney's (David Strathairn) office on his way to a lucrative job in high-stakes corporate law. But nothing is as simple as it seems including this case. Will the lure of power and a love affair with a sexy ambitious attorney (Rosamund Pike) at his new firm overpower Willy's fierce drive to win or worse quash his code of ethics? In a tense duel of intellect and strategy Crawford and Willy both learn that a fracture can be found in every ostensibly perfect facade. The Alibi (Dir. Matt Checkowski & Kurt Mattila) (2006): Ray Elliot (Steve Coogan) is an ex-con smart enough to leave the grift before the grift grifted him. Now Ray runs an alibi service for men and woman who want to spend a little quality love time away from their well... loved ones. Suddenly Ray is an accessory to murder and is being pursued by everyone from the savvy small - town cop and a heartbroken chauffeur to a holier-than-thou assassin known as 'The Mormon'. Unable to extricate himself from this tangled we Ray must at last place his trust in someone. Enter the fast-talking and extremely sexy Lola ( Rebecca Romijn). With Lola's help Ray decides to mastermind one final con that will clear his name and finally lay his ghosts to rest. But still things refuse to go to plan. And whether he likes it or not Ray is about to learn a thing or two about love and affairs of the heart - particularly his own.

  • Shawshank Redemption [Blu-ray] [1994] [US Import]Shawshank Redemption | Blu Ray | (07/05/2013) from £24.99   |  Saving you £-12.22 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.77

When The Shawshank Redemption was released in 1994, some critics complained that this popular prison drama was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its plot. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy who is sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we soon realise his claims of innocence are credible. We also realise that Andy's calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship and survival. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor and Screenplay, it's a remarkable film (which many movie lovers count among their all-time favourites) that signalled the arrival of a promising new filmmaker. --Jeff Shannon
