One of the legendary epics of the silent cinema - and the first part of a trilogy that Fritz Lang developed up to the very end of his career - Dr. Mabuse der Spieler. [Dr. Mabuse the Gambler.] is a masterpiece of conspiracy that even as it precedes the mind-blowing Spione from the close of Lang's silent cycle constructs its own dark labyrinth from the base materials of human fear and paranoia. Rudolf Klein-Rogge plays Dr. Mabuse the criminal mastermind whose nefarious machinations provide the cover for - or describe the result of - the economic upheaval and social bacchanalia at the heart of Weimar-era Berlin. Initiated with the arch-villain's diabolical manipulation of the stock-market and passing through a series of dramatic events based around hypnotism charlatanism hallucinations Chinese incantations cold-blooded murder opiate narcosis and cocaine anxiety Lang's film maintains an unrelenting power all the way to the final act... which culminates in the terrifying question: WHERE IS MABUSE?! A bridge between Feuillade's somnambulistic serial-films and modern media-narratives of elusive robber-barons Lang's two-part classic set the template for the director's greatest works: social commentary as superpsychology poised at the brink of combustion. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Lang's early masterpiece in its fully-restored version on Blu-ray in 1080p for the first time ever. With the escalating tension comes increasing violence as Slater's prejudice drives both him and Ingram to the very edge. • Meet The Parents [2000]Meet The Parents | DVD | (02/07/2006) from £3.74   |  Saving you £12.25 (327.54%)   |  RRP £15.99

Randy Newman's opening song, "A Fool in Love", perfectly sets up the scenario of Meet the Parents: "Show me a man who is gentle and kind and I'll show you a loser". Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) is the fool in love. Just as he's about to propose to his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo), he learns that her sister's fiancé asked their father, Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), for permission to marry. Now he feels the need to do the same thing. When Greg meets Jack, he is so desperate to be liked that he makes up stories and feebly attempts to ingratiate himself with his prospective father-in-law rather than having the courage of his convictions. It doesn't take an elite member of the CIA to see right through Greg, but unfortunately that's precisely what Jack is. Directed by Jay Roach (the Austin Powers films), Meet the Parents is a well-crafted comedy that makes for a pleasant contrast to the sloppy excesses of the Farrelly brothers. Stiller is great at playing up the uncomfortable comedy of errors, balancing just the right amount of selfishness and self-deprecating humour, while De Niro's excels as the intimidating father. Blythe Danner as his wife, the Gracie to De Niro's George Burns, is the true heart of the film and Owen Wilson turns in yet another terrific comic performance as Pam's ex-fiancé. --Andy Spletzer, Amazon.com
