But other kids jeer at him; adults are perturbed and even the kindly milkman turns against him. The absurd over-reactions of stupid people make his life a misery and drive him away. The Boy With Green Hair is Joseph Losey's film parable of tolerance and pacifism that was way ahead of its time.

  The first of two Raymond Chandler adaptations starring the mighty Robert Mitchum, Farewell, My Lovely put a capital M (for Marlowe, menace and murder) back in the Los Angeles neo-noir. It's 1941 in the city of angels - the police are corrupt, the hotel rooms are cheap and criminality infuses every transaction. Private detective Philip Marlowe (Mitchum) has been hired by an ex-convict looking for his old girlfriend. He's also investigating the murder of a jewellry-loving client. The two cases start to connect while Marlowe develops an attraction to the married but seductive Helen Grayle (Charlotte Rampling). The body count mounts and it looks like Marlowe is next. Dick Richards' unflinching and deadly serious adaptation (the third) of Chandler's novel glistens with a suitably pulpy sheen courtesy of Chinatown and Scarface cinematographer John A. Alonzo's lens work and David Shire's ice cool score, while Mitchum dominates as the rheumatic, world-weary Marlowe.

  A slightly dated but nonetheless fascinating snap shot of musical history, Beat Street is an urban musical detailing the roots of hip-hop. Set in early 1980s New York, the film focuses on the lives of a small group of young people setting their experiences against the larger backdrop of the city's burgeoning music scene. The story of up and coming DJ Kenny and his relationship with jazz musician Tracy may only be a device, but it's surprisingly effective, as is the ultimately tragic tale of graffiti artist Remo. The movie's real raison d'être, however, is to showcase the sounds of the street and thus is full of some of hip-hop's most influential names--Melle Mel, Doug E Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, The Rocksteady Crew, Jazzy Jeff and Arthur Baker--and while the combination of electro and rapping may sound a little crude to modern ears, there can be no doubt that Beat Street is the sight and sound of history being made. On the DVD: Beat Street on disc comes with pretty basic picture quality, but the soundtrack has benefited greatly from the digital remastering. The extras are limited to a collection of stills from the film and an amusing guide to break beats, which seems like a wasted opportunity. Given the nature of the movie, it's something of a shame that this disc doesn't go deeper into the subject matter.   The series was influenced by the internationally successful Charlie Chan detective films of the 1930s and '40s but in line with industry attitudes of the time that particular Chinese detective was invariably played by a white actor in 'yellow-face'. The BBC's update of the archetype cast the British-born Chinese actor David Yip as Detective Sergeant John Ho. Instead of the barely intelligable English typically spoken by Chinese actors in British drama Yip's accent has a strong Cockney influence. Ho fits the pattern of the maverick detective prepared to use unorthodox methods to solve his cases which emerged in series like Z Cars (BBC 1962-78) and further developed in The Sweeney.

Bumbling Judd, the patron of this particular establishment, may seem like a good-natured ol' Southern gent but he has a mean temper on him, and a mighty large scythe to boot Oozing atmosphere from its every pore (the entire film was shot on a sound-stage which lends it a queasy, claustrophobic feel), Eaten Alive matches The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for sheer insanity helped in no small part by some marvellous histrionics from Chain Saw star Marilyn Burns and William Finley (Phantom of the Paradise).
