  Fast & Furious feels like something of a reunion for the popular franchise. After neither filled out the starring roles in the third film, Tokyo Drift, both Vin Diesel and Paul Walker returned to the franchise for this fourth, and between them managed to power it to become the most successful in the series to date. With Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster also returning, Fast & Furious goes back to the streets where the series started, as once-rivals Diesel and Walker face, for the first time, a shared enemy. This, of course, is just the necessary groundwork before all concerned can jump into a series of impressive vehicles and drive them really, really quickly. Which, of course, they do. It’s brilliantly shot, too, with razor-sharp editing, fast pacing and some outstanding camerawork that leaves you feeling at the very heart of the action. There’s not a great script underpinning it all, and a few more action sequences wouldn’t hurt, but the slower moments are ably carried by the returning cast. It’s hard to work out whether Fast & Furious needed Diesel and Walker the most, or whether the actors themselves needed the film, but marrying them all together really does pay dividends. Naturally enough, there’s scope left behind for a fifth film, which given the major success that Fast & Furious deservedly enjoyed is no threat whatsoever. It might not be anywhere near the most intelligent film you’ll see in your life, but it’s a movie that knows what it wants to do, and has a great deal of fun doing it. More, please… --Jon Foster

  Once upon a time--1967, to be precise--Danish director Jørgen Leth released The Perfect Human. In The Five Obstructions, fellow countryman Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves) challenges his "hero" to remake the short five times and provides a different set of "obstructions" for each. Because Leth likes cigars, von Trier suggests the first be made in Cuba. For the second, however, he sends Leth to "the worst place on earth"--Bombay's red light district. The obstructions keep coming, interspersed with conversation and clips from the original film, in which actors engage in a variety of activities, like eating and dancing, while the narrator posits oblique questions like "Why is joy so whimsical?" (Von Trier claims to have watched it "at least 20 times.") In the end, the two Danes have whipped up an unclassifiable concoction that plays less like documentary and more like a duel between friendly adversaries. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

  In Price of Glory a promising young boxer is knocked out of contention thanks to a sleazy manager who cashed out on his potential by pushing him into a big-money fight before he was ready. Thirteen years later that very same boxer, Arturo Ortega (Jimmy Smits), has three sons whom he's training to be boxers too. His schoolteacher wife wants to make sure they get good grades, but Arturo is sure that boxing is their best chance to get out of the barrio. Flash-forward another 10 years, and the training is paying off. The three boys, Jimmy (Clifton Collins Jr.), Sonny (Jon Seda), and especially Johnny (Ernesto Hernández) have grown into smart and talented boxers. Obviously, Arturo is a good and a tough trainer, but the question of whether he's got his own or his sons' best interests at heart arises when a slick promoter (Ron Perlman) offers him big money first for his sons' contracts and then for a series of title fights. Price of Glory does an admirable job of riding that conundrum throughout, offering no easy answers. There is solid acting throughout and it's nice to see such a Latino-heavy cast, but at just over two hours the pace lags and the central themes are repeated one or two too many times. Aside from a late subplot about corruption and violence that comes across as a bit contrived, this is a good family film about boxing. --Andy Spletzer, Amazon.com

As for the plot: it's Halloween and two girls with car trouble hitch a lift from a vanload of clichéd "kids" who accidentally hold up a Kwik-E-Mart. They hide in the out-of-bounds funeral parlour, Hull House, which--you'll never guess--has a history of mysterious murders. Then, in a surprising twist, they begin to be picked off one-by-one and transformed into a variety of demons. A race ensues to see who will survive until sun-up. The camera trickery is right out of Sam Raimi's vastly superior Evil Dead trilogy, while even the titillating nudity is dispensed with in the first few minutes. In other words, CSI: Miami follows the same super-successful formula as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Fortunately, this instantly popular spin-off established its own unique identity from the start. Like CSI, the Dade County criminalists of CSI: Miami solve murders using forensic science. Unlike the Vegas crew, however, they're cops with the power to arrest, their coroner (Alexx Woods) talks to dead people, and almost everybody speaks Spanish. Sometimes their crime scene is a swamp, sometimes a resort hotel. Either way, the skies are always sunny, the 'gators always biting. Real-life Florida resident Caruso is joined by Khandi Alexander (NewsRadio) as Woods, Emily Procter (The West Wing) as ballistics expert Calleigh Duquesne, Adam Rodriguez (Roswell) as underwater recovery expert Eric Delko, and featured player Rory Cochrane as Tim "Speed" Speedle. Cochrane (Dazed and Confused) wouldn't become a full-fledged cast member until the 12th episode ("Entrance Wound"). Meanwhile, Kim Delaney (Caruso's former NYPD Blue cast mate) wouldn't join until the first ("Golden Parachute"), but left after the 10th ("A Horrible Mind"), reportedly due to a lack of chemistry with Caruso. Just as CSI has made the most of its location with stories about showgirls and casino owners, so has CSI: Miami exploited its surroundings for all they're worth. Pilot episode "Cross-Jurisdictions" (a crossover with CSI), for instance, was loosely based on the murder of Miami-based designer Gianni Versace.
