  • The Adventures Of Huck Finn [1994]The Adventures Of Huck Finn | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

Huckleberry Finn's age has been scaled down in this 1993 Disney film in order to accommodate star Elijah Wood's young years at the time. But that is not the only concession Mark Twain's great American novel must make to Disney revisionism. Wood's Huck, as adapted for the screen by writer-director Stephen Sommers, is all rascal and only nominally a philosopher, which takes a lot of the soul out of Twain's extraordinary story about Huck's enlightenment while travelling with the slave Jim (Courtney B. Vance) along the Mississippi river. Big chunks of the journey are also minimised in significance, and not just for the sake of storytelling economy. Jason Robards Jr and Robbie Coltrane brighten things up, but overall this is an unnecessarily simplified version of a literary classic. --Tom Keogh

When the destroyer reports the Lansing's silo doors are open and ready to fire the destroyer is ordered to fire on the Lansing. • Breakout [1975]Breakout | DVD | (18/03/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Breakout is a 1975 jailbreak vehicle for Charles Bronson and wife Jill Ireland. It also stars Robert Duvall as Jay Wagner, framed by his wealthy but scheming grandfather (John Huston) and sentenced to 28 years in a Mexican jail. Ireland plays his concerned wife who enlists the help of small-time pilot Nick Colton (Bronson) to get Duvall out of jail in an audacious escape plot. While supporting actors such as Randy Quaid as Bronson's sidekick bring a little enthusiasm to their parts, the major players do not. Bronson and Ireland deliver their parts with the stiltedness of a first run-through, while Robert Duvall's mind seems entirely elsewhere, as if he's unable to believe he's involved in such an inauspicious project. His character seems strangely indifferent to his fate, an indifference which spreads swiftly to the audience. The escape sequence takes an eternity to arrive and when it does is almost breathtakingly underwhelming. Only the gruesomely depicted death of a bad guy, slashed to pieces by a propeller on a runaway, strikes a pleasingly jarring note. Otherwise, you almost feel sorry for this film, so manifestly unloved is it by those who conceived and participated in it. On the DVD: Breakout on disc is presented in anamorphic widescreen format. There are no extras other than subtitles. --David Stubbs

  • Midnight Matinee [DVD]Midnight Matinee | DVD | (18/01/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Welcome to Holsten, B.C., a small town where no one is very happy. Two years ago the local movie theatre had a horror film festival, during which a local teen was murdered at the same moment and manner as the onscreen character. Now another horror movie festival is set to happen, and some people feel history will repeat itself. Sure enough, as the line between movies and reality blurs, the horror doesn't stay onscreen.

  • The Lorax [Blu-ray]The Lorax | Blu Ray | (19/11/2012) from £33.73   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

An animated rendition of Dr. Seuss's classic book about the threat of industrialization to nature, The Lorax opens in Thneedville--a town never depicted in the original book. Thneedville is an artificial place, made primarily from plastic. It sports inflatable trees, fast cars, and air quality so poor that the residents are forced to purchase bottled fresh air. In another new twist to the story, 12-year-old Ted (Zac Efron) discovers that his crush Audrey (Taylor Swift) wants nothing more than to see a long-extinct Truffula Tree, so he sets out to impress her by finding one. Since there are no real trees in Thneedville, Ted acts on the crazy stories of his grandmother (Betty White), venturing beyond the city's walls into the desolate wasteland to locate a mysterious creature called the Once-ler (Ed Helms). Here the story and animation begin to more closely follow the book. Ted discovers the grumpy recluse, who reluctantly begins to tell him a tale about a once-perfect landscape filled with beautiful Truffula Trees and cute frolicking animals--a landscape now decimated by one greedy young man's insatiable appetite for profit. The beauty and wonder of the Truffula forest and its creatures are right out of Dr. Seuss's illustrations. While the forest creatures may not be directly referred to as Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee-Swans, and Humming-Fish, the cute little bears, funny-looking ducks, and especially charming trio of singing fish are instantly recognizable. They serve, as they do in Dr. Seuss's book, to add just the right amount of humor and levity to what would otherwise be a pretty heavy-handed message from the Lorax (Danny DeVito) about environmental preservation. Ted's hormonal instincts to impress Audrey slowly begin to take a back seat to the plight of the lost trees and animals, and the Once-ler's assertion that "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better" rings true by the end of the film. The abundance of original music is a nice and unexpected addition to the story, though why neither Efron nor Swift actually gets to sing is perplexing. (Ages 5 and older) Tami Horiuchi
