Molly Hartley (Haley Bennett), a 17 year-old girl, was stabbed by her mother and survived but, although she has healed from the wound itself, she is still haunted psychologically by the experience. Her father, with whom she lives, enrols her in a new school to help her cope with the trauma and start a new life. However as her 18th birthday approaches molly must both deal with the stress of being a new student at her school and the continuing nightmares she has of her mothers attack on her. She begins to experience symptoms of the same psychosis that took control of her mothers life, but eventually Molly discovers that her mother and others who share her mothers concerns who want her killed in order to save her from a preordained life as a servant of the devil. Molly's parents made a pact with the devil to save her life. Molly stabs herself trying to break the pact, but the effort was in vain as the clock had already struck midnight.

Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, Tangled is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The film focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a frying pan multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. Tangled is a masterful blend of humour, adventure, passion and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating. • Children Of The Corn 1, 2 and 3 Collectors Edition PackChildren Of The Corn 1, 2 and 3 Collectors Edition Pack | DVD | (12/08/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

A box set that assembles the first three entries (of six, so far) in the Stephen King-derived minor horror franchise, Children of the Corn: The Collector's Edition puts three not-really-very-good horror pictures together into a fairly satisfying junk food platter than works okay as a demented four-and-a-half-hour miniseries. In the 1984 original, Linda Hamilton and her dead-loss husband are stranded in Gatlin, a small town in Nebraska where the children have formed a cult around the mysterious "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" and slaughtered all the adults. It has a certain creepy atmosphere in the early sections, but degenerates into a pointless run-around, with characters doing silly things that get them into further peril. Strangely, the sequels play better. In the 1992 The Final Sacrifice, a journo and his estranged son show up to delve into the Gatlin story, and one of the surviving cultists reorganises the gruesome business, with a few special effects hints that give a bit more form to the monster villain. And the 1994 Urban Harvest has another Gatlin kid adopted by a Chicago commodities broker and raising a patch of sinister corn in a backlot; this has a no-name cast and the usual dumb script, but make-up man Screaming Mad George stages some impressively gruesome stuff with a killer scarecrow and murderous cornstalks before finally bringing "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" on-screen as a Thing-ish vegetable monster whose rampage provides this set with something like a big finish. Incredibly, there are three more Corn sequels out there, presumably saved for a follow-up collection. On the DVD: Children of the Corn: The Collector's Edition's first film is in 16:9 anamorphic, though the original elements aren't in pristine condition and the soundtrack is mono; the 4:3 full screen sequels look sharper and have stereo to show off the Omen-like chanting scores. The only extras are "theatrical trailers", though parts two and three almost certainly didn't play in any theatres. --Kim Newman
