  Justin Edgar directs this coming-of-age drama set in the 1990s following three friends at a pivotal moment in their lives. The central character of the film is Jack (Jamie Blackley), a young man whose poor background hasn't quelled his hopes for a brighter future and who anxiously awaits news on whether he has been accepted for a university grant or not. He is joined for a Friday night out by Parsons (Mike Bailey), whose future appears to be in the hands of his parents and wilful girlfriend C.

When Tucker is suddenly murdered Drew must unravel the web of love time and betrayal that connects her to an unhappy past and a menacing future. Her search brings her to Ofelia (Belinda Becker) a futuristic femme-fatale who holds the thread of Tucker's fate and possibly Drew's as well.

The legendary Max von Sydow appears to be having a blast as the evil Ming the Merciless, while Ornella Muti, as his daughter, is the living embodiment of what attracts adolescent boys to comics in the first place. (She makes Barbarella look mundane.) One of the most shamelessly entertaining movies ever made, this is a knowingly absurd sensory freak-out that'll have the viewer blissfully checking the sky afterward for signs of Hawkmen. --Andrew Wright
