Inspired by real events The Indian Doctor is the award-winning BBC One drama that is a warm and humorous 'fish out of water' story of a high flying doctor who moves to the UK with ambitions to work in a top London surgery only to find himself in a small Welsh village. The second series picks up Prem and Kamini's story nine months later in the early summer of 1964. With Beatlemania now an international phenomenon and British pop music storming the US charts the 60s have really started to swing...in London. But in the South Wales valleys life for most people carries on as usual. Settled in their new home the doctor and his wife are waiting anxiously for the arrival of his mother-in-law from India who upon arriving is not impressed by their surroundings. The village also becomes home to an evangelist minister whose campaign against the evils of the permissive society are somewhat overridden by the activities of his beautiful and spoilt daughter. However the doctor's greatest challenge comes when the village finds itself in the grips of a deadly disease and it's a race against the clock to discover the source of the outbreak and vaccinate the villagers against infection before it's too late.

Goodness Gracious Me was never quite a classic comedy series, but it did achieve the goal of all such sketch shows: to make at least a couple of its characters part of the popular discourse. The show's best creations were those that served to let the rest of Britain in on a few of the in-jokes in British/Asian life. The bitterly competitive immigrant mothers boasting about the achievements of their first-generation children, the over-compensating, more-British-than-the-British Kapoor family and the obstinately patriotic Mr Everything Came from India. The sketch in which the latter passionately argues that Leonardo da Vinci was, in fact, Indian is a particular joy. Fine though these ideas were, Goodness Gracious Me also carried its share of padding. Hapless Romeo Mr Check Please is a less funny and less charming reading of The Fast Show's "I'll get me coat", and the kindest that can be said musical sketches is that they're not quite as lame as the ones on Smack the Pony. On the DVD: Goodness Gracious Me, Series 3 offers the standard episode selector, a song selector to direct the viewer to the unfunny musical parody of their choice, augmented by a simple yet brilliant idea that should be mandatory for all sketch show DVDs: another selector which allows you to watch all the sketches from the series featuring one particular character. The DVD also contains an interview with cast member Nina Wadia. No subtitles are available. --Andrew Mueller

Ever since the comedy greats stepped beyond the fringe for The Secret Policemen's Ball the annual Amnesty International concert has been one of the highlights of the comedy circuit. 2001's offering was called We Know Where You Live and let's face it, where else are you going to see the UK's top comedians and pop acts on one stage? Compeered by the "surreal stylings" of Eddie Izzard, this compilation of the night's highlights includes a new version of the classic "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch with Eddie, Harry Enfield, Vic Reeves and Alan Rickman. Rickman stubbornly sticks to the script while all around him improvise. There is also a great performance from Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse as the Self-Righteous Brothers and the Goodness Gracious Me team going out for "an English". As well as the comedy there are live performances from Tom Jones, Badly Drawn Boy and the Stereophonics, which seem rather abrupt and heavily edited. Some of the material is quite old, though--any fans of Izzard will already have seen him do the Star Trek phaser sketch where he talks about the other settings, other than stun and kill! On the DVD: What really makes this worth the price (apart from supporting a very worthwhile charity) is the extra footage. As well as some more performance stuff, including Phil impersonating Eddie Izzard which is frighteningly spot on, there is back stage material and a news report following the Amnesty bus round London. Buy it, because other wise you might get Eddie round your house! --Kristen Bowditch
