When it was made there had never been a more lavishly produced science fiction TV series than Space: 1999, which was British-made on a first-season budget of 3.25 million pounds and ran for two seasons from 1975-77. What keeps fans enthralled after all these years has only partly to do with the first-rate production values, the plausibly constructed spaceship models and expert special effects. The tone of the show is one of scientific dispassion, setting it apart from its TV SF predecessors such as Star Trek in which the mood is more generally convivial. Our heroes here are in dire circumstances that require cool heads as a survival trait: the moon and the 311 crew members of Moonbase Alpha experience a cataclysm, which causes the moon to break away from Earth orbit and travel endlessly through space. No TV series has created a more palpable feel of hard science fiction than this. Of course the show is not without its detractors, having been soundly lambasted for its many scientific errors. No less august a figure than Isaac Asimov criticised the show for the premise of the opening episode "Breakaway", which had nuclear explosions on the "dark side of the moon" somehow propelling it out of Earth orbit and flying through space without regard to any physical laws. And in "Earthbound" aliens travelling to Earth state it will take them 75 years to reach their destination, making one wonder why it didn't take the moon that long to encounter the aliens. While these are valid complaints, fans tend to remember the scientific seriousness of the series and the sense of awe created by the many strange creatures and phenomena the crew encounter on their journey through the Galaxy. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

Titles Comprise: Beowulf And Grendal: Adapted from the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf Beowulf And Grendal is a medieval adventure that tells the blood-soaked tale of a Norse warrior's battle against the great and murderous troll Grendel. Out of allegiance to the King Hrothgar the much respected Lord of the Danes Beowulf leads a troop of warriors across the sea to rid a village of the marauding monster. The monster Grendel is not a creature of mythic powers but one of flesh and blood - immense flesh and raging blood driven by a vengeance from being wronged while Beowulf a victorious soldier in his own right has become increasingly troubled by the hero-myth rising up around his exploits. Beowulf's willingness to kill on behalf of Hrothgar wavers when it becomes clear that the King is more responsible for the troll's rampages than was first apparent. As a soldier Beowulf is unaccustomed to hesitating. His relationship with the mesmerizing witch Selma creates deeper confusion. Swinging his sword at a great stinking beast is no longer such a simple act. Beowulf is a man caught between sides in this great shift his simple code transforming and falling apart before his eyes. Building toward an inevitable and terrible battle this is a tale where vengeance loyalty and mercy powerfully entwine. Merlin And The Book Of Beasts: King Arthur is gone the Round Table is in ruins and a rogue sorcerer has unleashed a reign of monstrous terror upon the land. For the court's last remaining knights their only hope lies in the powers of the now-bitter and broken wizard Merlin (James Callis of Battlestar Galactica). But can a once-great man of magic defeat a legion of creatures that includes Dragon Soldiers Death Hawks and Gorgons and still reclaim the legendary castle of lore? Laura Harris of Dead Like Me and 24 co-stars in this epic adventure that puts a savage new edge on the saga of Excalibur Mordred and the ultimate battle between Merlin And The Book Of Beasts. • A Ghost In Monte Carlo [1990]A Ghost In Monte Carlo | DVD | (29/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

Based on a novel by Barbara Cartland, A Ghost in Monte Carlo is an undemanding period romp packed full of twists and turns. The perfect cinematic equivalent of Cartland's literary style, the film is a glossy, star-filled but ultimately shallow exercise. Lysette Anthony is the wide-eyed innocent Mistral, released from her convent upbringing into the care of her Aunt Emilie (Sarah Miles). On arriving in glamorous Monte Carlo, she immediately strikes up a relationship with a dashing young lord and sets out to experience her newfound freedom. Matters take an unexpected, darker turn as Mistral finds herself caught up in the plotting of her aunt and in increasing danger. The performances range from Anthony's passable purity to a ludicrously over-the-top turn from Miles. The much-vaunted all-star casting amounts to a series of brief cameos from the likes of Oliver Reed, Joanna Lumley, Lewis Collins and Gareth Hunt--presumably at the request of executive producer Lord Lew Grade. It's fun for what it is but only as long as you leave any critical sensibilities on hold. On the DVD:A Ghost in Monte Carlo is essentially a video release transferred directly to DVD. The sound is digitally remastered and there is a very poor interactive menu to guide you through the various chapters but no extras. --Phil Udell

Let’s admit it right away, The Tribe may just be the best kids’ TV show ever. To be precise, it’s for older children and teenagers (and their parents will find it insightful, too), the very age group that occupies all the roles in this post-apocalyptic tale. Mixing the scenario of Lord of the Flies (except there are, y’know, girls in it as well) with the visual imagery of Mad Max and the angst-ridden psychodrama of Sweet Valley High, The Tribe tells of a near-future in which the world’s adult population has been wiped out by a virus. Of course, society’s infrastructure has gone, too, so the youthful survivors not only have to deal with all the usual trials and tribulations of childhood and adolescence but must also develop some form of functioning society of their own, without any form of adult intervention and with only the barest amount of technology. What happens, of course, is that all the social ills of the old world, from bullying to teenage pregnancy, are writ 10 times larger in the new. The ways in which the characters cope (or fail to cope) with these issues are both exasperating and deeply moving. --Roger Thomas

I Spit On Your Grave: A remake of the controversial 1979 cult classic I Spit on Your Grave retells the horrific tale of writer Jennifer Hills who takes a retreat from the city to a charming cabin in the woods to start on her next book. But Jennifer's presence in the small town attracts the attention of a few morally deprived locals who set out one night to teach this city girl a lesson. They break into her cabin to scare her. However what starts out as terrifying acts of humiliation and intimidation quickly and uncontrollably escalates into a night of physical abuse and torturous assault. But before they can kill her Jennifer sacrifices her broken and beaten body to a raging river that washes her away. As time passes the men slowly stop searching for her body and try to go back to life as usual. But that isnt about to happen. Against all odds Jennifer Hills survived her ordeal. Now with hell bent vengeance Jennifers sole purpose is to turn the tables on these animals and to inflict upon them every horrifying and torturous moment they carried out on her... only much much worse. I Spit On Your Grave 1979: Originally titled 'Day of the Woman' I Spit on Your Grave has gained a reputation as an extremely graphic and violent film as well as the most talked about film in cinema history! It tells the story of Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) a magazine writer from New York who retires to a secluded cabin in the woods to write her first novel. There she is brutally assaulted raped and left for dead by four country boys. But Jennifer is alive. Emotionally destroyed she finds herself choreographing a horrific revenge scheme to inflict punishment on her four assailants in methods that defy the imagination. Banned by censors and bashed by critics the legacy of I Spit on Your Grave goes on as the most disturbing film ever created. Yet it has become a cult classic of epic proportion!
