Final Fantasy Unlimited Volume 1 | DVD | (15/03/2004)
from £15.97
| Saving you £7.01 (54.01%)
| RRP Twelve-year-old twins Ai and Yu Hayakawa take a mysterious subway to Wonderland to look for their missing scientist-parents. Wonderland is a hostile place, ruled by the petulant Earl Tyrant and his assorted hench-creatures. Ai and Yu are attacked by monsters and saved first by Lisa, a practitioner of the "Kigen Arts," then repeatedly by the taciturn, gun-totting Kaze. The first episodes are cluttered with characters who appear briefly then vanish. Although Ai, Yu, and Lisa do a lot of traveling, the series doesn't really go anywhere: the filmmakers seem more interested in showcasing the elaborate CG effects at their disposal than in coherent storytelling. The effects are very flashy, but they never meld satisfactorily with the drawn animation. Based on the popular videogame franchise, Unlimited borrows from Matsumoto's Galaxy Express and Miyazawa's Galactic Railroad, but offers none of their mystery and magic. (Rated 12 and older: violence, tobacco use)

Meanwhile downstairs in the bustling servant's quarters we encounter Alan Bates and Helen Mirren as the head male and female members of staff. The various intrigues that play out between members of the different classes and sexes are all observed with Altman's customary withering eye and trademark roving camerawork. After a murder is committed comical pipe-smoking detective Stephen Fry arrives but the solution is arrived at in an unconventional way. With an impeccable ensemble cast that Merchant Ivory would die for Gosford Park is a classy piece of cinema from a great director getting back to the top of his form. Keeping Mum (Dir. Niall Johnson 2005): Known throughout the clergy for his perfectionism Reverend Walter Goddfellow (Atkinson) is preoccupied with writing the perfect sermon fails to realize that his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) is having an affair and his children are up to no good... A typically eccentric British black comedy with a delightfully dotty performance from Maggie Smith and a sublimely sleazy turn from Patrick Swayze to give sterling support to the snappy script from writer/director Niall Johnson.
