When outcast cop Richie Roberts (Crowe) sets out to bring down Lucas’s multimillion-dollar empire, it plunges both men into a legendary confrontation. Carlito's Way: Oscar winner Al Pacino gives an electrifying performance as former drug kingpin Carlito Brigante, who is sprung from prison by his highpowered attorney (Academy Award winner Sean Penn). He stuns the New York underworld by vowing to go straight from a history of violence, but his plans are undermined by misguided loyalties and an outmoded code of honour. In a life-or-death battle, Carlito takes on therelentless forces that refuse to let him go.Casino:Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci star in director Martin Scorsese’s riveting look at how blind ambition, white-hot passion and24-carat greed toppled an empire. Las Vegas, 1973, is the setting for this fact-based story about the Mob’s multimillion-dollar casinooperation, where fortunes and lives were made and lost with a roll of the dice.Mean Streets:Mean Streets announced Martin Scorsese’s arrival as a new filmmaking force – and marked his first historic teaming with Robert De Niro. It’s a story Scorsese lived, a semi-autobiographical tale of the first-generation sons and daughters of New York’s Little Italy. Harvey Keitel plays Charlie, working his way up the ranks of a local mob. Amy Robinson is Teresa, the girlfriend his family deems unsuitable because of her epilepsy. And in the starmaking role that won Best Supporting Actor Awards from the New York and National Society of FilmCritics, De Niro is Johnny Boy, a small-time gambler in big-time debt to loan sharks.Scarface:Directed by hit-maker Brian DePalma and produced by Martin Bregman who brought both Carlito’s Way legends to the screen, Scarface follows the violent career of a small-time Cuban refugee hoodlum who guns his way to the top of Miami’s cocaine empire. With its intense screenplay by Academy Award Winner Oliver Stone, driving musical score by Giorgio Moroder, and superb insights into Miami’s Latin lifestyle, Scarface joins the ranks of Hollywood’s greatest underworld dramas, as it lays bare the sordid power of the American drug scene.

  • The Osbournes - The Second Series [2002]The Osbournes - The Second Series | DVD | (28/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £35.99

The modern-day Addams Family returns for a second season of their landmark reality sitcom in The Osbournes. Overexposure quickly wore out the Osbournes' welcome, but the season opener, "What Goes Up", is a reminder of the surreal circus that was their lightning-in-a-bottle 15 minutes of fame. Ozzy and Sharon attend the White House Correspondents' dinner, where Ozzy rates a mention by the president and receives a thundering ovation. Daughter Kelly performs "Papa Don't Preach" at the MTV Music Awards. And son Jack is thrilled that McDonald's has brought back the McRib. The next episode, "Must Come Down", is the reality check, in which Sharon is diagnosed with colon cancer. But the family quickly gets back "to what they usually do", which is drive each other (and anyone who crosses them) crazy. Jack takes special delight in tormenting trespassing tourists by turning the sprinklers on them. When Kelly brings home her first serious boyfriend, a rock singer, it's to her mortified horror that Sharon questions him about his obscene nickname. The season does comes to a poignant end with a lavish New Year's party during which Ozzy and Sharon renew their vows, and ends with Ozzy passed out on the couch (just like their first honeymoon, Sharon sardonically observes). Of course, there is reality and there is reality. Though not dealt with onscreen, it has since been reported that Jack has undergone rehab for a substance abuse problem, a tragic family legacy. This puts something of a damper on watching the "wacky" antics. But as with the first season, The Osbournes is fun to visit, with cameos by, among others, Natalie Portman, Mandy Moore, P Diddy, and Marilyn Manson adding to the cachet. But thank god you don't live there. As with the first year, this two-disc package contains such inspired extras as a translator that provides subtitles for the addled Ozzy's profanity-laced dialogue. --Donald Liebenson

  • Gossip [2000]Gossip | DVD | (26/02/2001) from £5.23   |  Saving you £10.02 (252.39%)   |  RRP £13.99

Gossip is one of a spate of movies that owe a lot to Cruel Intentions. This time it's rich kids in college, but other than that Gossip stays well within the beautiful-young-people-doing-awful-things-to-each other formula. Lena Heady plays Jones, obviously the Smart Girl because she is briefly seen wearing glasses. Jones hangs out with Arty Guy Travis and Handsome Rich Guy Derrick, who finances their adventures and has a little bit of a lying habit. The three are all in the same journalism class (acidic monologist Eric Bogosian plays the acidic professor) and decide to start and track a rumour for their term papers. They pick rich and beautiful couple Beau and Naomi (Joshua Jackson and Kate Hudson) as the focus of the rumour, and before you know it their juicy story starts spinning out of control into ugly territory and a truly ludicrous climax. There are attempts at making sledgehammer points about the slippery task of finding Truth, but mostly Gossip is about the guilty pleasure of watching pretty young actors be mean to each other. You'll hate yourself in the morning, but watch it anyway. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

  • Bad Girls - Series 2 [1999]Bad Girls - Series 2 | DVD | (01/10/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £39.99

Few television dramas of recent years have managed to combine quality and popularity as successfully as Bad Girls. Series two of the women's-prison drama offers essentially more of the same, but the formula is so well honed that it would be churlish to complain. The main characters and storylines are still there, with the relationship that began between Nikki and Helen (Mandana Jones and Simone Lahbib) at the end of the first series brought eloquently and stylishly to centre stage--a result of both superb writing and performance. The show is given fresh impetus by the constant introduction of new characters. The resulting plot lines see the growing influence of the superb Yyvonne, the unhinged prison officer Di and a new wing governor Karen Betts added to the equation, all with explosive results. The mixture of humour and drama is, as ever, played to perfection. On the DVD: Having set an impressive standard with the DVD release of series one, Bad Girls continues to lead the field for television drama releases. Again the packaging of the four-disc set is handy but extremely stylish and comes with a whole series of extras. The documentary this time follows the cast on a promotional trip to South Africa and there are two galleries of photographs, deleted scenes, production and cast notes and a mass of outtakes that beg the question how they ever actually managed to make one programme, let alone the 13 included here, without the whole cast convulsing with laughter. --Phil Udell

BEYOND THE POWER OF AN EXORCIST The mid-1970s saw the rise in popularity of films centring on the subject of parapsychology, led by Carrie Brian De Palma's classic tale of telekinetic terror. Precognition, or future sight, would be the topic under exploration in Robert Allen Schnitzer's contribution to the psychic craze: the chilling and much-overlooked The Premonition. Mother Sheri Bennett (Sharon Farrell, Night of the Comet, Sweet Sixteen) is assailed by terrifying visions in which a strange woman attempts to steal away her five-year-old daughter Janie. Are these bizarre occurrences the result of some sort of mental disturbance, or is something much more sinister afoot? Featuring a haunting score from accomplished classical composer Henry Mollicone, The Premonition has remained unjustly obscure over the years but is heralded as a true classic of '70s US horror moviemaking by genre aficionados. Sharon Stone plays the title character, a gun moll with a heart of gold who takes a seven-year-old boy under her wing when her mobster friends threaten to rub him out (after killing his entire family). This remake of John Cassavetes' l980 film should probably have been nipped in the bud; Stone is totally miscast in the title role. As for the other characters, they don't inspire much sympathy or even interest in the audience, not even the cute kid. Why do directors feel the need to do remakes of good movies? As problematic as Cassavetes' films tend to be, Sidney Lumet should have known better than to take this on. Sharon Stone fans may enjoy this film, but there are plenty of disappointing problems that tend to get in the way. --Jerry Renshaw, Amazon.com
