  Shirley Temple took dance lessons at the age of three at Meglin's Dance School in Los Angeles and was spotted by Charles Lamont a casting director from Educational Pictures. Although Shirley hid behind a piano whilst in the studio Lamont took a shine to Shirley invited her to audition and subsequently signed her to a contract. Educational Pictures were just about to launch their series of Baby Burlesks a series of short films that satirized recent films and political events with pre-school children in every role. Since the children were dressed as adults and given mature dialogue the entire series was eventually seen as dated and exploitive although not before they had made a major star out of Shirley Temple. Shirley would go on to appear in many full length feature films further enhancing her reputation but the original shorts featured here and in a second volume illustrate perfectly why she was the biggest child star of the 1930s.   Stepping into the role of Leslie Charteris' "modern-day Robin Hood" Simon Templar (formerly played in films by smoothies like George Sanders), Roger Moore swiftly struck the right poses, adding a raised eyebrow to the character's established trademarks--a stick figure with halo, a whistled theme (co-composed by Charteris himself) and a quixotic commitment to adventure rather than decency. More clean-cut than the vigilante of the novels, Moore's Templar is a reformed thief (with an accent on reformed) whose adventures invariably involve a beautiful girl in trouble, an exotic locale established by stock shots and pantomime-level barroom sets with revolving fans on the ceiling, and "foreign" villains, played by familiar British character actors in false moustaches. The Saint ran from 1962 to 1969. Connoisseurs reckon the earlier, black and white shows are superior to the later colour seasons. From 1979 to 1980, there was a follow-up, The Return of the Saint, in which sufficiently ironic Ian Ogilvy donned Templar's polo neck, but the format seemed outmoded in comparison with The Sweeney and The Professionals. Filmed over a period of five years, Everyday uses the repetitions and rhythms of everyday life to explore how a family can survive a prolonged period apart. The story unfolds in a series of visits: first the family visiting the father in prison, later the father visiting the family at home. With each visit the distance between the children and their father becomes harder to bridge. By avoiding the normal cinematic conventions of time passing, Everyday focuses on the small subtle changes as people grow up and grow old whilst being apart.

  Released as part of the celebrations marking composer Richard Rodgers' centenary in 2002, this Rodgers and Hammerstein collection contains the film versions of State Fair (1945), Oklahoma! (1955), Carousel (1956), The King and I (1956), South Pacific (1958), and The Sound of Music (1965). By the time these pictures were made, the Broadway originals had become the standards by which all else was judged in a golden age of musical theatre. And while film versions tend to dilute the books, there are still threads of darkness for those who require a more varied texture. But it's the fabulous songs which really count. Rodgers' partnership with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein was cemented by their 1945 cinematic joint effort State Fair, rushed into production by 20th Century Fox in response to MGM's all-conquering Meet Me in St Louis and with a similarly folksy theme. Directed by Walter Lang, it's a charmingly flimsy affair with some delightful numbers. Oklahoma!, directed by Fred Zinnemann, features Agnes de Mille's renowned choreography, irresistible songs and two outstanding performances from unlikely musical actors: film noir siren Gloria Grahame playing against type as Ado Annie, the girl who can't say "no", and Rod Steiger as the menacing but tragic Jud. Carousel, the morally dubious tale of fairground barker and wife-beater Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae) who gets a chance to redeem himself after death, is crammed with great melodies including the tear-jerking anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone". South Pacific, which contains perhaps the most spine-tingling songs penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein--"Some Enchanted Evening" is just one--a wartime love story which also manages to touch on racism and morality; anything but lightweight. Both The King and I and The Sound of Music, of course, have become cinematic legends in their own right, thanks in no small part to their leading ladies, Deborah Kerr and Julie Andrews. On the DVD: Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musicals glow as freshly as if they were made yesterday in four of these DVD transfers, with the other two a disappointment in comparison. South Pacific, Carousel, The King and I and The Sound of Music are offered in widescreen, giving the full benefit of the original Cinemascope presentations. Oklahoma!'s titles are presented in widescreen, but unforgivably the film then reverts to a disappointing 4:3 format which hardly does justice to the big sky settings of the Scope original. The sound quality is also disappointingly muffled for Oklahoma! and State Fair, both of which are crying out for a good polish. --Piers Ford

  Shirley Bassey is show business royalty and Divas Are Forever is an inspired attempt to create a documentary around a concert given during the Diamond Awards Festival in Belgium. The setting is perfect, with the Dame rising supremely above the innate vulgarity of the event. You can cut straight to the songs if you want, and you won't be disappointed: all her hits are here, from "Goldfinger" to "Big Spender". The voice is clearly one of the great instruments of popular music. She seems to regret being pigeonholed as "Bassey the belter", but her vocal chords weren't built for small rooms or smoky nightclubs. Each number is a high-octane emotional set piece in which she always stops just short of travestying her own inimitable style. The real interest, though, lies in the glimpses of the star's life on the road. There are some splendidly sticky moments that leave her flunkies dodging the barbs. The tantrum she throws during the video shoot with the Propellerheads for "History Repeating" is a gem. And the negotiations for her to be presented with a jewel as the "surprise" climax to her concert leave you with no doubt that this diva knows her own worth. --Piers Ford
