  Incredibly, National Lampoon's Class Reunion was the project that launched John Hughes' writing career before he started directing. On some surreal level, the film's premise is actually quite ingenious. It blends together the nudie flick and stalker/slasher genres that became hugely popular in the early 1980s. The group of classmates reuniting 10 years after graduation are nothing like the idiots of Animal House: they're worse! So when they are hunted through the dilapidated halls by misunderstood psycho Walter Baylor (Blackie Dammett), you can expect lots of black humour. Running for their lives are yuppie-in-the-making Bob Spinnaker (a slimily smooth Gerrit Graham), class nobody Gary Nash, slobbish womaniser Hubert (Stephen Furst playing against his usual shy nerd), scary-looking Satanist Delores and two potheads who are oblivious to the goings-on. Hilarious cameos come from Michael Lerner as mysterious Dr Young, Chuck Berry (!) and the late, great Anne Ramsey (Momma in Throw Momma from the Train) as the world's worst school cook. There were more than a dozen theatrical "Lampoon" movies plus many more for TV and video: Class Reunion may not be subtle, and it's certainly not politically correct, but it endearingly remains one of the daftest from the series' early days . On the DVD: The picture and sound are understandably average, but some effort has been put into the menu page at least; a gallery of 20 photos are the only extra. --Paul Tonks

  Produced by Jackie Chan (who also makes an uncredited cameo), Gen-X Cops is an attempt to kick-start a franchise that will play well in the international market--hence the odd mix of Cantonese and English dialogue throughout. Match, Alien and Jack are three unruly students kicked out of cadet college and adopted as a crack undercover unit of delinquent Gen-X Cops by a put-upon police inspector given to epileptic fits in times of stress. Augmented by token hacker chick Y2K, they are assigned to a case involving a shadowy, arms-dealing Yakuza and double-crossing Triad warlords. The principal cast, mainly made up of unknowns, models and Cantonese pop stars, inject their roles with an infectious charm and enthusiasm while Benny Chan (Code of Honour) admirably keeps a handle on the non-stop plot twists. The action relies more on gunplay and pyrotechnics than martial arts. The three leads dodge bullets and bomb blasts without the aid of stuntmen. Among several stunning set pieces are a gun battle in a labyrinthine boat warehouse, skydiving from skyscrapers and an explosive finale in Hong Kong's famed conference centre. On the DVD: Fully-animated menus and 30-chapter scene selection are just the tip of the iceberg with this feature-packed DVD. Extras include "No Pain No Gain", a 30-minute "making of" documentary, a music video for the Gen-X theme tune "You Can't Stop Me", in which the actors make like the Shanghai Sex Pistols but come off like Boyzone gone bad. There are also extensive cast and crew features and production notes. The transfer of the main feature is sharp and clear, presented in letterboxed widescreen with Dolby sound. An impressive selection of viewing options includes Cantonese dialogue with removable English sub-titles or an alternative English-dubbed audio track. --Chris Campion

  Even though Transformers--Generation 2 was released after Transformers Volume 1, it shouldn’t be confused with Transformers--Volume 2. Got that? Good, because Transformers--Generation 2 is a collection that is best left to the completists and die-hard collectors. There’s no denying that the five episodes here ("More Than Meets the Eye Parts One – Three", "SOS Dinobots" and "Heavy Metal War") are all classics. It’s just unfortunate that the versions on offer are from the later Generation 2 series. See, after the Transformers franchise had all but sunk into obscurity, the toys were relaunched and given a new shot at life as Generation 2. And just as the old toys were given new paint jobs, the old episodes were updated and enhanced by the best technology a relatively low-budget production could buy. What this translates into is lots of annoying computer graphics (called the "Cybernet Space Cube") popping up at random intervals to denote a new scene, or even just a change in camera angle or character perspective. The results would test the limits of even the shortest attention spans. So while Transformers--Generation 2 does collect some of the finest episodes of the Transformers cartoon, telling the origin of the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons and how they came to earth, as well as introducing the popular Dinobots and Constructicons, it’s ultimately a frustrating experience.   Back in the 1980s, there were few phenomena bigger than the Transformers. A hugely popular toy line, it also spawned a long-running comic book, a hit feature film and successful animated television series. Transformers--Original Series, Volume One collects five episodes of the hit television series: the epic, three-part "The Ultimate Doom", plus two episodes that have never before been available in the UK ("Fire on the Mountain" and "War of the Dinobots"). Epic in scope, the story of the Transformers was a timeless, if unsophisticated, tale of good versus evil: the heroic Autobots battled to prevent the evil Decepticons from realising their goal of universal conquest. The resulting civil war raged for millions of years, draining the energy resources from their home planet Cybertron and leading the two robotic races to earth. Here, they continue their war, using their unique ability to alter their bodies to take on the form of earthly vehicles, weapons and creatures. In the morass of bad 80s' cartoons, the Transformers shone like a beacon on Saturday mornings--excellent animation (for many in the US and UK, it was their first introduction to Japanese manga, albeit basic) and characters with real personalities and depth (for most children of the 80s, Autobot leader Optimus Prime was a very real hero).
