For Steps fans, Christmas 2001 will be remembered as the bleak time when the fab five announced that they were splitting. The End of the Road is the recording of their final performance at Manchester's MEN Arena. Deceptively more polished and cohesive than their previous performances, the show does retain some of the traditions of previous Steps tours. More of a holiday-camp spectacular than a traditional live concert, the majority of the tracks appear to be pre-recorded, with only the slower tracks being performed with "live" vocals. As expected, all of their biggest hits are staged but a disproportionate amount of album and new compositions are also included. These impromptu moments were undoubtedly added to provide convenient costume change breaks, with the five each taking turns to perform tracks individually. First off is H who swoops over the audience on a trapeze at the start of his rendition of Cher's "Believe". To anyone other than a star-struck 10-year-old, H's stage behaviour comes across as a tad annoying not to say patronising. He also manages to ruin most of the up-tempo tracks by encouraging the audience to shout "ooh, ooh". In retrospect, the show is fascinating to watch for other reasons, particularly as band member Claire looks close to tears throughout, ominously hinting at her insider knowledge of the impending split. On the DVD: Steps: The End of the Road features the following candid warning: "Our apologies for the slight drop out in the programme. This was unavoidable but it does not mean your copy is faulty!". Luckily the glitch in "Love's Got a Hold on My Heart" only lasts a couple of seconds, resulting in a brief loss of sound, with the visual and audio recording immediately returning to standard. Appealing to fans of dance computer games, the lightweight extras are focused around mastering 30-second dance routines of some of Steps' greatest hits. --John Galilee

  • Steps - Gold - Greatest Hits [2001]Steps - Gold - Greatest Hits | DVD | (15/10/2001) from £19.79   |  Saving you £-7.80 (N/A%)   |  RRP £11.99

It is regularly suggested that Steps are one of the hardest-working groups in pop and the Gold DVD provides further evidence that such an assertion is almost certainly true. Since crashing into the Top 20 towards the end of 1997 with the line-dancing inspired "5,6,7,8" (the "in" craze at the time) the group have been constantly churning out top-notch tunes. Their videos have been as equally colourful, energetic and fun (apart from the video to "When I Said Goodbye" which was shot in black and white). With their carefully choreographed dance moves, flashy locations and outrageous hairstyles and outfits, the videos have always been a top priority for the group. This collection ranges from the video for their more recent cover of "Chain Reaction" deceptively filmed in one continuous take, to the beach fun of "5,6,7,8" and are excellently matched to the style of each song. Admittedly some of the videos are rather cheesy, such as "Say You'll Be Mine", which is a pastiche of the group re-enacting scenes from recent Hollywood blockbusters, and the sleigh ride scene in "Heartbeat" (also the "bad hair" era for the female members of Steps). However the videos work best when a soap opera-style narrative is introduced, as with their flat-sitting escapades in the "Stomp" video, and the "Four Weddings and a Funeral" inspired video for their first number one single "Tragedy".On the DVD: This DVD is truly excellent value--literally bursting with extras, from a greatest-hits video medley, through to the single/album-cover interactive library. One member of the band concisely introduces each video, and there is an audio commentary by the group on selected videos (for "5,6,7,8", "Heartbeat", "Tragedy" and “Deeper Shade f Blue”) and bonus material includes the group performing "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" on ITV's "Motown Mania". The CD-ROM option allows even more extras, such as additional footage (look out for, and click on the Steps logo that appears on selected videos) and web-links. The disc also contains the software "PC Friendly DVD" making it even easier and fun to play the DVD on your home computer. However this collection has an annoying aspect; the numerous menus you need to pass through to access each of the videos individually. There are also no interactive options to guide you through the legendary dance moves --John Galilee

This is a very special performance by one of the most popular jazz groups of the early 1980's. Taped amidst the works of Rodin Thorvaldsen and countless Roman sculptures the band plays in the atrium of this world famous sculpture museum - the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. It was a comfortable inspiring location for the musicians and the tracks were personally mixed by the band leader Mike Mainieri.STEPS AHEAD is an interesting amalgamation of unique and diversely talented musicians. Eddie Gomez is perhaps best known as a longtime member of the Bill Evans Trio where he always provided sensitive support and powerful technical mastery. Gomez also has many classical credits to his name. Michael Brecker is an awesomely capable saxophonist who is widely respected in musician circles and much in demand as a recording studio performer. He has appeared on over 1000 albums one hundred of which have gone Gold but he also is one of the leaders of the Brecker Brothers band along with his brother - the superb trumpet player Randy Brecker. The pianist then 18 years old and on her first professional tour as a musician is the Brazillian Eliane Elias. Later on she married Randy Brecker whom she recorded with often and became a leader. Peter Eskrine is best known as a longtime drummer for the immensely popular Weather Report but he too has played on countless recordings and has been a leader. The excellent vibraphonist Mike Mainieri leads this fine group contributing many compositions himself. But Mainieri obviously respects and admires his musicians and he draws the best out of their varied talents. So sit back and enjoy this extremely well recorded performance by one of the freshest jazz bands of the early 1980's.Tracks:1.
