The Stereophonics Live at Cardiff Castle is best summed up by one of the punters interviewed before the start of the show: "Theyre just a real band, arent they. Theres no rubbish going on--no nice haircuts or leather trousers. Theyre a proper band." More than that, they come across as indies answer to the classic power trio--assuming anyone remembers the question--belting out an amazing set to a 10,000 strong audience in the gorgeous grounds of Cardiff Castle on a glorious summers day in 1998. Fans will find all their favourites here, and the perfectly captured atmosphere is effectively the bands fourth member. On the DVD: Live at Cardiff on disc contains no sign of the "open and humorous interview" which, according to the back cover blurb, is supposed to be intercut with the concert footage. There is, however, a moment or two of pre-concert chat with various smug management and record company types who provide their smarmy appraisal of the band that pays their salaries. Just ignore them and enjoy the gig, which, in fact, is all there is on this 4:3 DVD anyway. There are no special features at all.--Roger Thomas
Later... Louder is combination of the most rock & roll moments from Jools Holland's late night BBC2 show, which offers the only slot currently on terrestrial TV for New and experimental music. Due to this, Later... Louder offers the cream of the indie and rock crop over the last 10 years. Beginning with Dave Grohl in fine form with the Foo Fighters, we then switch to his mates Queens of the Stone Age belting out "No One Knows". More spot-the-connection fun follows, as the Screaming Trees' 1996 performance of "All I Know" sees a young Josh Homme on lead guitar. These connections run pretty much all the way through the disc, which adds an interesting slant on how to create a DVD track listing. With stand-out performances from the White Stripes, PJ Harvey and the Soundtrack of our Lives, Later... Louder also features the interviews from the original shows with such wide ranging talents as New Order and Courtney Love. This is a must for all those who are in need of a varied rock diet. On the DVD: Later... Louder offers an accessible menu and has an innovative way to access the interviews on offer during a song: a double-bass icon that pops up during the performance. The visual aspect of the DVD is standard enough at 16:9, but you'll find yourself wishing that they had cranked up the Dolby Digital to offer surround sound, as the 2.0 stereo offers a little less oomph. --Nikki Disney
The Stereophonics have come a long way since their Cardiff pub-band days. The NME even went so far as to blast a picture of Kelly Jones onto the houses of Parliament proclaiming Kelly and Cerys Matthews (of the late Catatonia) the King and Queen of Wales. All be it a cunning publicity stunt for the NME, this was still an important point in the development of the Welsh music scene. Although The Sterophonics may lack the political warbling power of the Manic Street Preachers, the whine of Catatonia and the experimental licence of the Super Furry Animals, what these boys offered to Wales and beyond is bouncing feel-good rock, with some great ballads and an enigmatic front man in Kelly. On the June 12, 1998 the 'Phonics played Cardiff Castle taking there music back to their roots--all be it on a much grander scale--and they played their hearts out with their back catalogue of tunes. The disappointment of the gig is that there are just not enough songs to justify the size of this event. Sure they filled the castles mock arena and people seemed to have a good time, but unlike most artists who take on gigs this size, these boys just don't have a vast back catalogue of albums to fall back. On the DVD: this limited-edition three-disc set is a must for all Sterophonics fans. With a live recording of their gig at Cardiff Castle you have the option to pick out your favourite song from "Last of the Big Time Drinkers" to "Looks Like Chaplin". The gig is intercut with interviews with the fans at the gig and the band themselves. Along with this you have another great gig taken from their Performance and Cocktails tour, Live at Morafa Stadium, this time with a choice of 21 songs, it offers "the best party they've ever thrown" apparently. With Dolby Surround Sound there is certainly no missing out on the atmosphere of the gigs and the editing of the Cardiff gig is great, although the recording at Morafa Stadium leaves a lot to be desired on the visual front. Disc three offers the real meat of the Special Features. "Roll Up" galleries the band's music videos from their two albums, Performance and Cocktails and Word Gets Around, including their video version of Apocalypses Now for "The Bartender and the Thief" and the Mini-tastic version of the Italian Job for "Pick a Part that's New". It is actually amazing to see how many of their videos pay homage to great films. Their collaboration with the Daddy of Welsh music, Mama Told Me Not To Come is also included, possibly one of the best songs from Tom Jones' Reload album. "More Life" shows the making of the Music videos and "In the Photography" offers a photo selection from the "making of" videos. All in all this is a great package.--Nikki Disney

Jools Holland's long-established Hogmanay/New Year's Eve celebration Later Hootenanny remains TV's definitive dad-rock haven after 11 years on air. This formidably well-stuffed collection is a best of the best: the easiest way to check out the guest list is to study the cover picture--there really are that many names. Amusingly, the compilation comes close to shooting itself in the foot by opening with Solomon Burke's rip-roaring "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love", thus giving the following 31 turns a near-impossible act to follow. If in doubt, watch it at the end, as the everybody-up-on-stage version of Jeff Beck's "Hi Ho Silver Lining" that closes the disc is unfortunately a shambles. Along the way, though, there are plenty of highlights, the best of which add up to a triumph for the Welsh contingent. Cerys Matthews and Tom Jones do their best smoochy version of "Baby It's Cold Outside" before it began to wear a bit thin, the strapping Matthews managing to come on like a cross between Bambi and that girl you fancied in the lower sixth. Immediately preceding this is a gloriously menacing performance from John Cale in which he turns Johnny Mercer's jazz classic "I Wanna Be Around" into a leering, spitting threat to the listener's personal safety. There's something for everyone here, though, so just enjoy the show. On the DVD: Later Hootenanny on disc has nothing much by way of extras other than a handy facility that allows you to programme a sequence of any six tracks of your choosing, which is quite clever. But with over 30 acts performing more than two hours of music on a single disc, you really don't need anything more. --Roger Thomas
