The Great Escape (Dir. John Sturges 1963): One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time The Great Escape is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges screenwriters James Clavell (Shogun) and W.R. Burnett and composer Elmer Bernstein. Based on a true story this film also stars Steve McQueen James Garner Charles Bronson and James Coburn. The Thomas Crown Affair (Dir. Norman Jewson 1968): Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) is a lone wolf in chic clothing. He's a Boston tycoon who masterminds a daring bank job even though he doesn't need the money. But this time she may be too much in love to give him up. McQueen and Dunaway are lovers and adversaries in a stylish cat-and-mouse thriller written by Alan R. Most of all it's the story of Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) a sailor who had given up trying to make peace with anything: including himself.

  • Bullitt (Deluxe Series) [1968]Bullitt (Deluxe Series) | DVD | (12/08/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £49.99

San Francisco has been the setting of a lot of exciting movie car chases over the years, but this 1968 police thriller is still the one to beat when it comes to high-octane action on the steep hills of the city by the Bay. The outstanding car chase earned an Oscar for best editing, but the rest of the movie is pretty good, too. Bullitt is a perfect star vehicle for cool guy Steve McQueen, who stars as a tenacious detective (is there any other kind?) determined to track down the killers of the star witness in an important trial. Director Peter Yates (Breaking Away) approached the story with an emphasis on absolute authenticity, using a variety of San Francisco locations. Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Duvall appear in early roles, and Robert Vaughn plays the criminal kingpin who pulls the deadly strings of the tightly wound plot. --Jeff Shannon

The Big Lebowski, a casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen brothers (Ethan and Joel), seems like a bit of a lark and the result was a box-office disappointment. It's lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hair-netted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins? The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. --Jeff Shannon

  • ThumbtanicThumbtanic | DVD | (10/03/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

At the beginning of Thumbtanic, thumb-puppet/animation maestro Steve Oedekerk's superb parody of Titanic, the camera pans over the wreckage of the, err, Thumbtanic, revealing a quantity of unopened crates marked HULL PATCH KIT, SURPLUS BINOCULARS, ICEBERG RADAR and 1200 INFLATABLE RAFTS. From there on it just gets funnier. Oedekerk specialises in bizarre "filmettes", as he terms them, in which the characters are played by real human thumbs with faces grafted onto them via computer wizardry. Quite apart from the startling realisation that Leonardo DiCaprio actually does look like a thumb wearing a wig, the laughs don't stop from beginning to end. We see the passengers lining up, talent-contest fashion, so they can all have a turn at doing or saying something memorable at the sharp end of the ship. There's a topless scene involving the thumb-incarnation of Kate Winslet. As the ship goes down, one enterprising thumb sells male passengers babies and sex-changes, while the brief love affair between Jake and Geranium is finally eclipsed by the realisation that all the passengers survive and there are "plenty of snacks" for everyone! The perfect antidote to all those unfunny film parodies, Thumbtanic elevates post-pub, kebab-in-hand viewing to the status of an art form. --Roger Thomas
