  • My Favorite Martian [DVD] [1999]My Favorite Martian | DVD | (12/04/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Tired but watchable adaptation of the popular 60s TV show of a friendly Martian who lives with an agreeable earthling. Like Disney's other live-action remakes 101 Dalmatians and Flubber, the emphasis is on quick-moving scenes and special effects--not character. Jeff Daniels is the bemused earthling who gets to know Christopher Lloyd's alien ways. Much of the film feels like a retread borrowing heavily from other sci-fi comedies (and "fish out of water" films), including Lloyd's own Back to the Future. Lloyd and his talking space suit (voiced by Wayne Knight who brings the same personality as his Newman role on Seinfeld) don't know simple Earth customs but inexplicably know every pop culture reference in the last 10 years. Daryl Hannah and Elizabeth Hurley are along for the ride as Daniels' good-girl and bad-girl flames. TV's Martian, Ray Waltson, shows up as a secret agent alien hunter--and pours more emotion into his scenes than the rest of the movie combined. Ages 6 and up. --Doug Thomas

  • Attila The Hun [2001]Attila The Hun | DVD | (04/03/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Straight out of the American television movie school of historical thought, Attila the Hun is a glossy, at times long and often ridiculous re-telling of one of the great stories of Ancient Rome. How much of it is historically accurate is debatable--much of the action is ludicrously far fetched--and the image that most of us have of Attila is quite different to the bare-chested, longhaired reject from an 80s soft rock band that is presented here. The film does have its own slightly warped charm, though. The storyline is surprisingly complex, involving plots and counter plots, and the movie does exhibit a sense of epic somewhat in the vein of Gladiator, but is sadly lacking the budget, style or talent. The acting is awful (as befits anything that stars Steven Berkoff) and reduces the political machinations of Rome to little more than Dynasty in togas. Gerrard Butler is a fine actor--as he proved in the recent TV drama The Jury--but is woeful here, delivering his lines in a bizarre trans-Atlantic Scottish accent. At three hours it's way too long, too. There does remain something strangely compelling about Atilla the Hun, though you'll find more reliable facts about Roman history in an Asterix book. --Phil Udell

Glastonbury (Dir. Julien Temple 2006): The mud. The music. The mayhem. A documentary on the 30th anniversary of Britain's best-known music festival the definitive experience that is Glastonbury! With no Glasto' festival in 2006 this may be the best way to sample the finest musical gathering in the UK. In 1970 a young farmer named Michael Eavis opened his 150-acre farm to 1 500 people who paid one pound each to watch a handful of pop and folk stars perform all weekend long and the Glastonbury Festival was born. The following year several rich hippies including Winston Churchill's granddaughter provided funds to enlarge the event and 12 500 people turned up to see David Bowie and Joan Baez. For most of the past 30 years the Worthy Farm in Glastonbury has provided a delirious outdoor concert for thousands of people over the summer-solstice weekend. Julien Temple whose film The Filth and the Fury screened at Sundance in 2000 has spent the past few years collecting footage from every single Glastonbury Festival ranging from professional outtakes from the film Nicolas Roeg made about the 1971 event to amateur home videos collected from the attendees themselves often retrieved from forgotten corners of closets and attics. Interweaving images of impromptu art happenings skeptical locals and stirring performances by music legends not to mention the unbridled energy of each successive generation of youthful music fans Glastonbury skillfully chronicles the evolution of the longest-running music festival in the world. It's All Gone Pete Tong (Dir. Michael Dowse 2005): Based on a true story and Winner of Best Feature Film at Toronto Film Festival and Gen Art Film Festival Paul Kaye (Best Actor U.S. Comedy Arts Festival) stars as Frankie Wilde the legendary British DJ and musical mastermind of the underground club scene whose career is cut down at its pinnacle by unthinkable tragedy - the loss of his hearing. Darkly funny and inspirational with fierce performances by both Kaye and Kate Magowan (24 Hour Party People) as his sex-crazed Mrs. you'll laugh and gasp but cheer him on as he struggles out of the abyss to reclaim his life and reputation. This Is Spinal Tap (Dir. Rob Reiner 1984): Go straight to 11 - with the magic of DVD you can now go to your favourite Tap moments whether it is the diminutive Stonehenge the pod that won't open or the amp that goes all the way to 11. For the first time ever you can choose how to watch the greatest ""rockumentary"" in history. See this cult phenomenon in its splendid entirety or use the menu to follow the band's antics via an interactive tour map of select scenes from a list of classic Tap quotes. And if all that isn't enough there is after all. the music - Hell Hole Sex Farm and the timeless Big Bottom.

Daniel Myrick ; Eduardo Sanchez 1999): Now prepare for a motion picture experience unlike anything you've ever seen heard or feared before. The Blair Witch Project follows a trio of filmmakers on what should have been a simple walk in the woods but quickly becomes an excursion into heart-stopping terror. As the three become inexplicably lost morale deteriorates hunger sets in accusations fly. By night unseen evil stirs beyond their campfire's light. By day chilling ritualistic figures are discovered nearby. As the end of their journey approaches they realise that what they are filming now is not a legend but their own descent into unimaginable horror. The Good Son (Dir. Jospeh Ruben 1993): For Mark Evans (Wood) the loss of his mother is too much to bear. What Mark needs is friendship and companionship so in a desperate bid to overcome his bereavement he is sent to stay with his cousin Henry (Culkin).
