  After 10 seasons of sick, wrong, brilliant, subversive, and groundbreaking humour, South Park just keeps getting a little more sick, a little more wrong, and a lot more funny. What could possibly be left for the boys from the small, redneck mountain town of South Park, Colorado to accomplish? Plenty, as it turns out. Cartman, for example, fights a midget in the season opener, pulls a practical joke that gets poor Butters sent to a special camp for gay children, sets a new town record for the most number of homeless people jumped over on his skateboard, and fakes having Tourette's syndrome in order to get away with saying whatever he wants at school. Stan gets pulled into a bizarre and hilarious conspiracy surrounding Easter in a plot that parallels The Da Vinci Code, and Kyle becomes a Guitar Hero, only to lose his best friend to the glittering lights of rock stardom. Clearly the brightest star in this season, though, is the two-part episode Imaginationland, where the boys have the entire contents of the world's imaginations, religions, and superstitions, laid before them for better, and for worse. It's a brilliant episode that encapsulates everything that continues to make South Park so strong: imaginative story lines; sharp animation; indelible characters thrust into ridiculous situations; and all of it tied together with a strong ekimthread of subversive humour. It's a formula that results in the sort of TV that just won't be seen elsewhere, and considering that one whole story line revolves around a plot where Randy Marsh (Kyle's Dad) tries to outdo Bono (lead singer of U2) for the record of World's Largest... umm, Stool, well, maybe that's a good thing. But for fans of the show who can't get enough of goin' down to South Park to see some friends of theirs, season 11 will continue to give plenty of reasons for making the trip. --Daniel Vancini

  Nine seasons in, and South Park hasn’t lost its ability to upset people. This boxset brings together the 14 episodes from the ninth season, including the hugely controversial “Trapped In The Closet”, which is actually one of the weaker inclusions here (and we somehow doubt that it’s Tom Cruise’s favourite, either). However, it garnered headlines for its tale of Stan taking a Scientology test, and the repercussions of it. That said, this particular series of South Park has much more to commend it. Across the episodes in what can be easily described as a lively season you’ll find the gang starting their own talent agency, a hippie music festival coming into town, and the small matter of Mr Garrison switching gender. All of this is the foundation for a rapid-fire collection of gags. What South Park isn’t given credit for often enough though is what’s bubbling up under the surface. The reason creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone never seem to run out of ideas is that very often they have something to say with their episodes. And while, on one level, they can be enjoyed for being the quick hits of outrageous fun they are, there’s a wise intelligence in the midst of it all, too. Perhaps that’s why the show still shows no signs of running out of steam, and season nine is the latest evidence to back that up. --Jon Foster

  Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modelled on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honour in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast-paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and Good Fellas) but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com

To his great surprise and discomfort however Sophie accomplishes numerous feats of mind-reading and other supernatural deeds that defy all rational explanation leaving him dumbfounded. Before long Stanley confesses to his beloved Aunt Vanessa (Eileen Atkins) that he has begun to wonder whether Sophie’s powers could actually be real. If they were to be true Stanley realizes that anything might be possible even good and his entire belief system would come crashing down. What follows is a series of events that are magical in every sense of the word and send the characters reeling.
